Big East Statement

Bottom line we got screwed. Fans of teams have uttered that line since sports began and sometimes that sentence loses value because it is used so often. It is legit in this instance. The thing is I thought that coming on here and venting and hearing everyone else vent would make me feel better as other people "felt my pain". It has not worked and not the fault of any of you but somehow has made it worse. Like I keep relieving it. Think I am going to stay clear of the boards until after Marquette game to try and get taste out my mouth.
I seriously hope that game was not a spiral inducing one. Would be great to beat Marquette but kind of feel will always go back to SH game. Like we are 1-1 but should be 2-0. We are 6-3 but should be 7-2 kind of thing. Hope not.

Asked if he felt the call robbed St. John's of a win, Chris Mullin said: "I think it was quite obvious what happened," but wouldn't answer further questions about it

CM has handled this with professionalism and class. Keeping it close to the vest and within the locker room. Thinking it will build team character.

Here is the letter I just wrote to Ackerman, Jackson, and Cahill. I am shocked at how much this story and following cover-up bother me on a level beyond a sports fan. There is something completely indecent about what they are doing. Maybe it is Trump, but I have absolutely had enough of being lied to and people in power telling me 2 + 2 = 5.

The statement you released today has me angry, saddened and confused. You have accepted lying and covering up. This statement seems to have been written by people who want to make a problem go away and not people who want to find the truth. I am shocked at how much this bothers me, but it really feels like a personal slight to be so blatantly lied to.

First, to accept Micheal Stephens reasoning here is what had to have happened, and please if I am wrong tell me. As soon as LJ Figueroa tapped the inbound pass Stephens knew the ball and Figueroa were still in bounds AND the clock was not moving (within about half a second). Except the clock was moving and Stephens was in error. Mr. Cahill in your career as a ref have you ever seen a ref blow a play dead for a clock not moving that actually was moving within .4 seconds? In your years of playing and watching basketball have you Mrs. Ackerman, or Mr. Jackson seen that? Michael Stephens is doubling down on his story that in a potentially season-changing play he knew St John's had deflected the pass, he knew Figueroa was still in bounds, he knew St. John's had a chance to steal the ball, but because he thought a clock that actually was moving was not moving after .4 seconds he decided the play absolutely needed to be blown dead and the play started over. Seriously? That's what we are going with? Please tell me I am wrong and I am missing something. Please tell me your story is better than this. Again if my 7 year old did this I would first tell him not to lie, and second I would tell him if you do lie try to lie better.

It is a deeply hurtful feeling to be lied to. It makes you think nothing matters and that people in power can maintain power by bending reality to their will. It sucks when the President does it and it sucks when the Big East does it. I think you are all probably decent people and I think a lot of this obvious lie of a statement comes from you being put in a terrible position. I assume you have personal relationships with Michael Stephens and don't want to make him look bad. I think on some level you have decided to protect him and his reputation instead of telling the truth. I think in some ways that is noble but ultimately misguided. If Michael Stephens is telling you he blew the whistle because he thought the clock didn't start he should be fired not for missing a call, but for lying. If the other refs backed up his lie they should also be fired. If Michael Stephens or the other refs have received punishment for their obvious lies the Big East should say so and why. If you don't believe their story tell us. If Michael Stephens had just admitted he messed up and thought Figueroa stepped out SJU fans would have gone nuts. It would have really sucked. But in that case you would have had every right to say, "Michael is a great ref. We all make mistakes and I am thrilled he will be a Big East ref for as long as possible." Except he lied and doubled down. To take his side is to abet his obvious misdeed and show that you think perpetuating a lie is more important than finding the truth.

The truth should always win out. Please reconsider the statement you just put out. It is never too late to tell the truth.

This all recorded. It's like those thieves that steal packages from a stoop and are on video.

[quote="SJU61982" post=310867]Here are a couple of laughs to kind of, sort of, lighten things up.

Would you pay to hear this guy talk? I wouldn't if you let me in for free:

After the game Saturday night, I'm guessing that the key to South Orange may be on the way for this guy soon, too.

I didn't think I could hate this guy Stephens more. But I remember that championship game, thinking Wisconsin was screwed all game by the refs who basically handed Duke the title. What a surprise Stephens was involved in that controversy too. How does this guy have a job, least of all in the BE,

Hope they use it as motivation. Us Against the World approach.

I would let Tanner Boyle send my email to Ackerman:

Tanner Boyle: Hey Val... you can take your apology and your shitty referees and shove 'em straight up your ass!

Your statement really summarizes the issue perfectly. I cannot comprehend how the ref could notice that the clock had not moved in the time it took from LJ to deflect the ball until it hit the floor. This is what we must somehow believe. Also this was not inadvertent. He 100% saw that the clock had not moved and thought this was the proper call. Perhaps he should have watched the last play closer as I thought I saw another .04 lag before the clock started. In the long run maybe thus will benefit us as any close calls may swing our way for a long time.

How bad can this referee be? He has social media accounts named "Move to Improve Officiating Camps" . I kid you not. :p

Does the official language describing it as a "perceived delay" mean there was no delay? How do you perceive something that didn't happen?

So does any of this change the fact that it's an L on our record? Hopefully the NCAA selection committee remembers this.

If the Big East Commissioner desires to perpetuate fiction then it should replace Ackerman with Vince McMahon.

Can only hope NCAA selection committee sees this game with an asterisk.

If they were willing to give consideration to Syracuse for the nine games Boeheim was suspended, they should do same here when Big East admits they screwed up.

Folks.....we no longer support Val Ackerman and Stu Jackson. Any appearance at CA and/or MSG should be treated like David Stern or Roger Goodell approaching the draft podium.
