Big East Recruiting during the 2014 cycle

Have a feeling we are gonna be big time players for some transfers once the season ends

We don't need a transfer. We need guys that can be impactful for us next year.

That might not be an option. All 3 (If no one leaves) new comers wouldn't make an impact next year and it might be too late in the game to pick up a real impact player. Would you rather have the 3rd guy be a bench warming freshman project or an impactful transfer who could step in for 2015?

Otis- I know our staff comes off as very hands off and that can drive me crazy at times but they are not lazy. They've shown in the past that when there is mutual interest they will be relentless

Right now we have nobody to replace Sanchez and Gift which is a problem. In addition, I would have thought/hoped we wouldn't be setting up a landslide situation for 15' when we lose all of our talent. I'm not happy that we couldn't focus on one or two kids who could have been impact players entering next season. We should have been able to.

It's setting up a massive rebuild for 15' and I see no way around that now.

He started this thread to show how strong the big east is in recruiting, he wasn't taken a slam at the staff. Joking here of course

Hey Mike & Tom,
Take a gander to where I mentioned about hoping that players picking up their phones or emailing the StJohns staff [see post #104814 on page 3]and you will see it was in response to transfers.
As you know it would be a violation of NCAA rules for the StJohns staff to contact or recruit a player committed to another school unless that player first obtains a release. So yes, I hope that a transfer picks up the phone or emails a member of the StJohns staff. Capisce?

BE conference has 2nd most Top 150 kids only behind ACC.

With 2/3 the teams.

And us not getting anyone.

Don`t worry moose, we`ll get a 3 star recruit, a transfer, or a JUCO.
Some bs like that.

Yeah, BS like a 5-star PG in 2013, a pair of top 100 forwards in 2012, or six top 100 players in 2011.Hopefully we don't get stuck with a Baron Davis or Earl Watson...I couldn't stand crap like that. This Lavin guy needs to read Recruiting for Dummies.

I think so too.
Lavin said he would sign 3-4 this spring. He wouldn't say that unless he knew had a few guys ready to pop.

If it's someone who graduates this spring and still has eligibility remaining, he could play for us immediately next season

I agree, Marcus
I thought that one of Lavin's goals was to "even out" the classes so we wouldn't have to do a major overhaul every 4 years
Looks like he hasn't delivered in that regard
2015 will be a major rebuild once again, which means it will probably take another 2-3 years to be "relevant" again
We need to work out the schollie situation so that we are "reloading" rather than "rebuilding"

Well said. Strongly sense we get a project in DelaRosa & two other guys with no immediate impact. Juco pool for bigs has just about closed and, if they take Henderson, he will take a few years to develop. Hope I'm wrong. That "reloading" desire noted above is so essential to give this program stability.

Yeah, that is just a reality in college basketball these days. The fact that he said 3-4 makes me really think he's got plans that we don't know about. I won't doubt the man on recruiting. If we win, he'll deliver.

Not that I have heard ANYTHING about it, but Antoine Mason, Anthony's younger brother, is the second leading scorer in the country behind McDermott, averaging 25.2 points per game, and will graduate this spring with a year of eligibility remaining. Niagara is going nowhere next season andthe President of Niagara was on the SJU bench for years.

Bring him on, redshirt Greene, Branch, or Pointer and we are better off for two years. Jordan-Harrison-Mason 1-2-3 would be light years better than Pointer at the three...the kid can drive with the best of them.

Not that I think marillac's scenario is in any way realistic, but Gift was redshirted as a senior.

Apples to Oranges with JUCO compared to 4 yr player IMO

You've been stubborn since summer camp, Moose. Don't be so fast to jump to conclusions. Not only did GG redshirt this past season as a senior, Ray Young also redshirted as a senior for Lavin at UCLA during Rico Hines' senior season.

“He was very deliberate in making the decision,”Lavin said. “But after talking to a lot of people, including (junior guard) Billy Knight, (senior forward) Rico Hines and his parents, he ultimately decided that the chance to finish his degree and be the lone senior next year was pretty appealing.”

Lavin's thoughts on a senior redshirting? “It’s almost like training for the Olympics,”Lavin said. “(Ray) has a full year to train.”

Ray Young's thinking? “I’m happy with the decision,” Young said. “It’s a great opportunity for me basketball-wise. I can’t lose. I can only win.”

Next season is a very unique situation that not many coaches face due to the scholarship imbalance that Norm left. We don't need all three of Branch-Green-Pointer if we add any new players. It'd be nice to retain be able to lean on a fifth year senior in 2015-2016.

Oh goodie. A UCLA history lesson from 20 years ago. I'm sure this happens at the majority of schools.........
Stop blaming Norm for the scholarship situation. Lavin has had 4-5 recruiting cycles now to rectify the situation.

Redshirting a Senior = I dropped the ball recruiting this next class

I don't care what coach it is (especially someone who has recruited top classes before), but no one just takes off a recruiting cycle. No one.

Everything smells like he did for '14.

Plugging in a 3* and claiming we didn't have many ships to fill is an outright lie and I wish someone would call him out on it.

He had ample opportunity to lock in on a quality player or two and he chose not to.

He stopped recruiting Whitehead because he claimed it would look bad to lose a NY kid. What type of nonsense is that? Go down fighting or just give up. But if you're not going to coach, do what you do best.

I'm preparing myself for his speech come April full of exaggerations and fake hype talking about how under the radar this '14 class will be and how he's focused on '15.

I don't think that has to be the case. When Lavin redshirted Ray Young it was because he had recruited over the kid and he was waiting for Kapono to enter the draft and a few seniors to graduate.

If, for some reason, we got Antoine Mason and redshirted a senior it would be because the senior holds more value as a 5th year senior on a young team than he would playing 10 mpg behind Antoine Mason.

I'm a big fan of the redshirt and I particularly like the mid-career redshirt.

Of course you do. Because you're a college football fan and with 90 ships its a necessity. With 13 ships it's called mismanagement.

Not sure if its actually the case, but absolutely agree about working the 14 class harder with only one spot to fill in 2013. But with this 2015 rebuild you talk about, isn't that all the reason to grab a transfer?

Then Bill Self mismanaged his way to a few Final Fours. Xavier redshirt a tin of kids as well. Some kids can really benefit with an extra year if experience/lifting. You never fully know what you have in a kid until he suits up and you see him day in and day out in the gym, in class, on the weight room....what's so bad about wanting a veteran like Phil Greene around for a fifth year? What is so bad about wanting to see he kid get 25-30 mpg instead of 10-15?
