Big East in the NCAA Tournament

Villanova was playing 4 guards. It's rarely going to work in the tournament against a big team with defensive and rebounding talent. They got stopped and also killed on the boards. Another imbalanced roster, just with more talent than St John's.

I thought Ochefu and Pinkston were dominant big men who killed us when Obekpa was out. Now they are all guards with no size inside? What happened?

I've never been high on Pinkston. I think he's underachieved at Nova. Ochefu is improving but hardly a force. They need all their guys to shoot it well to win. Two had a bad night and NC State out rebounded them by a wide margin

Novs is a total embarrassment to the league. When you flagship goes down to an also ran your league looks bad. I am sure FOX sports is not happy at all.

I've agreed with Marillac lately, but there is no way to sugar coat this loss. Villanova did lose to an "also ran" of the ACC. I didn't see the game (as, I was at a birthday gathering), but IMO, this is a game 'Nova shouldn't lose. Point blank.

This kinda loss doesn't look good for our conference.

Clearly anything can happen in "Madness" but Val Ackerman & Stu Jackson can't be high fiving each other right now. Have always liked the program Wright has built, but must acknowledge his Tourney experience has been underwhelming in last five years or so if I recall correctly. Xavier, who I also like as a program, was also fortunate to play Georgia State in second round. Plain & simple a tough Tourney for BE. Thst doesn't mean it is a weak league, but man what a disappointment.

No doubt anything can happen during "Madness," but I've seen NC State play three or four times, and if someone would've told me they would beat Villanova, then I would've said, "No way!" Of course, it's all about the "Madness." It can be a crapshoot.

The conference is far from weak. Just a "weak" showing, so far, in the dance.

The whole thing is depressing. And the ironic part is that Xavier and Butler, 2 newcomers to the conference, were the only teams to show up in the second round. Xavier did get lucky pulling Georgia State, but Butler was truly impressive. Anyway, hope Xavier continues its streak, stranger things have happened.

If you ever saw Ochefu stand next to Dom it was like men and boys. That is truly a big man.
Nova got outplayed and out-coached period.

Well, Villanova will have a shot at the dance again next year, hopefully they will represent better. I doubt we will have the same opportunity.

This thread is about the Big East in this year's Tourney, not next year's.

Ochefu missed his first 6 shots, 4 of which were layups and one was an unopposed dunk. He then scored on his next attempt and did not take another shot for the rest of the game, finishing 1-7. Villanova shot 8-28 in the first half........they were horrible. Hilliard had 12 points in the first half and did not score again until the end of the game with his 3-ball flurry...........clearly it was too little, too late. Arcidiacono did nothing to help either. Did Villanova choke? I don't know, but clearly they honked the big bobo this game and based on their recent performance in the tournament, they, like Georgetown, have created a trend of underperformance.

This is what you never like to happen to your league:

Yes, but the immediate focus is almost always on how the top seed lost the game when it happens in the second round. NC State will get their credit and coverage Monday through Thursday for this win. Also, thank you NC State for making the middle of the ACC look a lot better. The fact that the sixth ACC team upset a 1-seed to make it to the Sweet 16, only makes the seventh best ACC team's exclusion (Miami) look like that much more of a mistake. Also, the ACC is now a perfect 9-0 in this tournament. Hopefully, Virginia, Duke and Louisville help the ACC push that record to 12-0 tomorrow!

When Jay Wright talks all this nonsense about "owning it" and how this doesn't "define us as a team", it comes off as a hustle. Players play the game, and Villanova was downright awful tonight. How much of that falls on Wright and how much falls on the players is up for debate, but this game isn't some anomaly on an otherwise stellar record. Wrights teams have a tendancy of playing awful when the spotlight shines brightest.

Whatever "owning it" means, it clearly DOESNT mean Wright will have his teams better prepared in the future. He's certainly had his fair share of opportunities. I don't know much, but I know that.

This team was overrated to begin with. There's a reason the ACC is 9-0 and likely to be 12-0 after today. The best conference prepares you to play against anyone. NC state was simply not intimidated

And NC State's coach basically stated that during the postgame interview.

On my way to Church this morning I heard Lupica on the radio call the Big East the Junior Varsity when compared to the ACC.

I love the BE but we are in a serious danger zone. I think it was imperative to get three minimum to the sweet 16 to establish credibility for the conference and it was totally do-able but yesterday was as bad of a day as we could've asked for. Jay Wright is still a great coach but he deserves all the criticism for failing to get Nova to the second weekend again. Butler and GT very tough losses.

The conference will be competitive and there will be parity again next season but until we can have a good NCAA showing we will not have the juice we once were able to boast and what makes it that much worse is the astounding success of the ACC this weekend. Very very tough to stomach.

Ironic. I've always thought of Lupica as the wannabe -- not even JV -- version of Bob Costas ... and a varsity level pompous ass.

Costas is not much better.

Yep, and the only solace he can take now is the comfort he gets with Bottom feeder BC being in the league.

I llikened the matchup to SJ vs.Auburn in '86 when we ran into team that was just too big and athletic for us (in adition to Berry's ankle injury)...bad match up...Nova built more for regular season than for NCAA tournament where defenses ramp up...they were just too slow for NC State'sguards and not physical enough for teir front line
