Big East Awards Predictions

So, I think it'll be a little bit of disappointment once awards are given.  If all things were fair we should have COY, FOY, POY, & DPOY.

I think it goes down like this...

POY - Colin Gillipse, It's the safe pick, Villanova was best team in conference, he's the best player on that team, and most known player in the conference, and it would be a feel good story for him to win it after going down with his injury.  If Champ was more known, this award would be his no question, but since he was realatively unknown going into the season and isn't on national award lists, it's unlikely they'll give it to him.  POY is more of a popularity contest.

FOY - Dawson Garcia, He finished the season strong, was the pre-season pick, and he was arguably the best player on his team.  Posh missing those last 2 games, and having subpar performances in the last 2 games he did play in, probably sealed the deal for Garcia, even though Posh is the better player and did more to help his team win.

COY - Mike Anderson, I think this is the one area we won't get short changed in.  No coach exceeded expections like CMA did, finished 5 spots better predicted and did this while team was battling injuries to starters all year long.  Only other competition would be Hurley, but I think UConn only playing 17 games and CMA beating him in the head-head will be enough for CMA to get this.

DPOY - Posh Alexander, I think this is where they will make it up to Posh at.  Only competition is Isiah Whaley on UConn, however he just lost his Big East lead on block shots to Obiagu at Hall, so it's going to be hard to justify giving someone the award that didn't even lead the conference in a defensive category.  Posh leads the league in steals by a wide margin.

Most Improved - Honestly, this one is hard to say because I don't know individual jumps of players on other teams.  I can't think of anyone that sticks out that didn't hear much about last year and just exploded this year.  I would think Champ's production couldn't be matched by anyone on this.

Also, pretty safe bet that Posh makes All Freshman team and Champ makes first team All Big East.

Edit: I forgot to add Most Improved Player

Lol you are out of your mind if you think anybody but posh is winning FOY. I'm way more confident in him winning ROY than him winning DPOY.

Who selects the winners?
League coaches vote on the awards and they aren't allowed to select their own players.

Except for Ed Cooley who undoubtedly will vote for his players across the board and for himself as coach of the year. /media/kunena/emoticons/grin.png

Or since he can't vote for his own player, vote for a player who has no business even being in the conversation instead of a player who should be to give his player that is in the conversation a better chance of winning.

Not saying I wouldn't vote for our guys but I wouldn't be surprised if Garcia wins ROY, Gillespie POY, Julian MIP, Posh DPOY and Moore 6th man.

Garcia has had a good season also and been pretty consistent.

Gillepsie was the best player on the top team  (although Julian was the BR leading scorer and a stat stuffer on both ends of the court).

No player has made as big of a jump in scoring average as Julian in many years.

Posh was a defensive terror across the entire court, not just near the rim like the shot blockers.

Who was better than Moore off the bench?

Does St Johns have such a good year without Julian?
Was any other player in the league as consistent as Julian?
Gillespie didn't even improve on his junior year numbers. Don't see how you could give him the award over Julian. It would be complete horse shit

I would be very surprised if Posh doesn't win rookie of the year. Gillespie looked like the leader for a while and may still win. In my mind it's a toss up. Not expecting Julian to win. Coach seems deserving of Coach of the Year but who knows. Posh is a great defensive player but would be surprised if he wins both rookie and defensive player of the year.

Posh Alexander Takes Top Defensive Honors, Julian Champagnie Named Most ImprovedQUEENS, N.Y. (March 8, 2021)

A day after earning spots on All-BIG EAST teams, Posh Alexander and Julian Champagniegarnered additional recognition from the league on Monday, as Alexander shared BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year honors and Champagnie also shared Most Improved Player honors.   Alexander shares his award with Connecticut’s Isaiah Whaley while Champagnie’s accolade is split with Xavier’s Zach Freemantle.

Freemantle doubled his points and rebounds, guess can’t really argue with that one. Can’t pretend to watch Whaley on more than a few occasions but Posh’s defense was the story of the BE for a few weeks and might be the biggest reason our season turned around.
