BET - Xavier (1), Thur. Mar. 8, 12 Noon, FS1 / Radio TBD

Nothing to do with BE or Xavier, but in keeping with tonight's exciting finishes and good karma theme, everyone's favorite Dukie, Grayson Allen, misses 3-point shot with four seconds left to tie UNC, which goes on to win 74-69.

Edits: Apologies for my Paultzman-like number of posts tonight. But sitting here with my laptop while watching tonight's games really got my blood flowing. Promise to be more restrained tomorrow.

Same here. Sucks that our season is over. Would have actually looked forward to an NIT game just to watch our guys continue to fight to get better. Hope they all have a productive off season and come back stronger and better than ever.

On a different note , I am amazed and humored by those who continue to plead for new Assistant Coaches . Why? Really ? And , the only name those posters mention is Mike Rice . Another Why ? Rice failed his first gig at Rutgers . I admire his going through therapy , Anger Management programs , etc but , I see no reason he belongs on our Staff . I am happy with St. Jean, Richmond and Matt A. All have their areas of skill and expertise . I may be alone on this but, I think Mullin has become a very good Coach . I never shared the sniping or minutia about sitting on the Press bench or not wearing a tie . All that stuff is petty.
You're not alone. I've said it before, the last three seasons have been excruciating at times but I've never thought Mullin's teams have played on poor strategies. They've often done amazing things against overwhelming matchups. More often than not that was just keeping it competitive but not getting a W but on a few occasions exceeding way above and beyond. And when you listen to him post game he goes exactly to what went right and wrong without platitudes or spin. I also think the player development has been some of the best I've seen in my lifetime. During huddles Mullin has his own style. He seems to approach it like a professional football coach and allows St. Jean to provide plays while he conveys a simple message of importance.

Questionable to me is: 1) how involved Richmond is but I don't know the details so I'm willing to make the assumption that Mullin is a professional and uses good judgement. 2) The player retention has been NBA like but I don't think you can do that at the college level. We need several 4 year guys always in continuity. When that happens I think we'll be officially back. 3) seems to me that Mullin came in with the idea of a prototypical player that he wanted to be the identity of the team: Long and Thin. But the lack of muscle has really hurt and completely missing on a big man for this season was near unforgivable and totally perplexing to me. Then with the double whammy fiascos of Wilson and Lovett it was magnified exponentially. Hopefully that is a mistake that will never repeat. Lesson learned in spades.
Count me in as one of those who doesn't think it's an absolute necessity that Mullin runs every X and O's play. We knew that was going to be the case going in. Paul, I like your analogy of the football coach. I think what Mullin is most skilled at is motivating, and you can see he does a great job of that based on how he got these kids to give their all every game despite the losing streak.

I also am really glad player development was brought up. I feel like in the past few decades, I've seen too many players come through here and regress, or never get better, than the day they stepped on campus. It's so easy to see how much improvement was made. I was hoping we'd get more out of Bashir and he could become a star, but that wasn't in his DNA.

No doubt about it. And his kids would run through a brick wall for him.
He's 64-62 in big east games. Never could win a MAAC tournament. He's had good starting players transfer out. But he does seem to be a great guy to be around when he wins.
Fair point, but as mentioned, 5 consecutive NCAA tourney appearances, and recruiting appears to be on the upswing, I believe two top 50 kids for next year. Plus, he also seems to have a knack for success in the Big East Tourney.

Agree...Good article...

Coaching shake up makes sense, but still wonder if it would be a shift of seats (St. Jean stays but Richmond moves back to special assistant to make room)....or would one of the two leave?

Is a Jim Ferry what will make a difference? 2 good years at LIU, rest is nothing to get excited about. Can he recruit ?

Think I'd still rather have Mike Rice if he can mesh well w/ Mullin and know his role.

So which asst. coach is on the block, Mitch or Greg? Or both? I'm sure Matt's safe. Is Ed Pinckney finally available?

Had that chance last summer and doubt that happens now. After recovering from 11 game losing streak reasonably well, I wonder if CM has more leverage now re keeping staff relatively intact. Sense a modest change not an eye opener.

I would be happy with Jim Ferry. He has a good reputation and many years of head coaching experience. Think he would make a strong contribution.

I'd love to see us add a big-man coach, someone who can attract and develop players with size. I realize he's not coming here, but someone with name recognition like Eddie Pinckney would be a great addition.

First you have to get the big men. Then you have to keep them. Then you work on developing them. We recruited and lost by arrest or departure 4 players 6'8 and over. All we have to show for it after 3 years is a project in Keita who is 6'9. The guy that needs development is Matt Abdelmassih in recruiting bigs. It would help if Mitch and Mullin were involved but I haven't seen it with any bids except Jordan Brown in California and unless they can deliver that quality big man, I will consider their trips to the west coast a mix of business and pleasure which I thought ended with the least coach.

Caught what you did there 72 re-posting so you could correct least coach with last coach. Freudian slip noted! ;) :(

Would Jim Ferry be “a modest change or an eye opener”?
Other question is, does CM sense the staff needs an ‘upgrade’ say, in x / o regimen, or that would be too extreme a change?
