BET-Villanova, Thur. Mar. 9, Noon, FS1/970AM

for as close as the coaches are or supposed to be, they kept pouring it on for what? Draining 3s with mins left up by 40? There is a thing called sportsmanship, they teach it in CYO. Nova easily had the game, sportsmanship Jay Wright. Surprised by this because I'm a fan of his.

Spot on.

I don't have any trouble with a team banging threes on us in normal possessions. What do you expect them to do - run out the shot clock. Running up the score usually involves staying in a press a team can't handle and then scoring layup after layup. If we can't defend the 3, in no way is that running up the score. It was an ass kicking, and his 7,8,9 players all capable of starting for us.

He is playing for a national championship - we aren't and it's been a long time we were even in that conversation. You want your team game ready, and not taking anyone for granted. I've never heard of popping 3's as running up the score - layup drills, yes. Full court press, yes. Three point shots - no way.

I don't know why you guys are all worked up over this first year group playing crappy putrid defense while scoring 77 a game.

The coach just said he's going to work on it during the offseason when you fix this stuff

Trust the process

I went to the game yesterday (if that's what that was called). Obviously a complete disaster. Would have been nice to keep it close. I did not expect a win but we were clearly outclassed in every phase. I guess you can say it set the bar as to how far we need to go and it feels like a long way. SJU fans had nothing to cheer about. Just a couple of general thoughts since recapping the game would be painful:

1- We need to figure out how to play defense against the 3 point shot. Weakness all year needs to be addressed on our defensive approach. We already know effort is below average. Dead beat horse.
2- We need to better evaluate and recruit. For example Rich Freudenberg needs tons of work. He is slow and mechanical. He was reported to be a shooter and frankly he doesn't shoot well. Hopefully he spends the summer here working with his teammates. I don't want to give up on the kid as he is a million miles from home and is just a kid but man we didn't see the player we thought we recruited. This can also be said of Federico and Bashir about some of their flaws.
3- Losing Marcus will set us back yet again. It was quite obvious which team had seniors yesterday and which team did not. I don't know how we can achieve that but our 1st and 2nd year players are no where near the talent level of one and dones at the bigger programs. ML is not NBA ready. If he leaves he can make some money in Europe or wherever. That is his right. But if he leaves he really did nothing for our program. I understand the 4year player is like the unicorn but we need stability of at least a 2 or 3 year player.

Oh well. Hopefully CM can keep working and get us to a better position. On to 2017/2018.

I thought most egregious was Paschal driving for dunk when playing at garbage time with Nova scrubs

Seton Hall up by 3 against Nova They play us they shoot lights out they play the hall they are ordinary Guess it is Defense

Talent and size. Nova, even on a bad day, knows they can out physical every one of our players. Paschal looks like an AA against us because he is talented and knows he can out physical anyone on our team .He's not going to bully Desi Rodriguez.

Regardless of what happens from here on in Seton Hall had a good year after losing Whitehead. Willard did what he had to to save his job and now has a program. If a player like Nad Reid wanted to stay local Seton Hall is a safer bet. Hope we get there at some point.

Seton Hall just lost that game probably for many reasons...but a huge one was not boxing out on that last 'Nova possession. Terrible. They box out, they win. Instead everyone is watching. I just don't get kids not automatically boxing out.

Jalen Brunson interviewed after the game when asked about their offense " We can't worry about offense, it is all about getting stops." Great game, not pretty.

Great game, indeed!

This game was a horrendous way to end a season where we beat Syracuse and Georgetown.
We were not going to beat Nova but they are not 43 points better than St. John's.
Mullin did a piss poor job of setting up a game plan. Lovett played out of control and was disinterested on defense.
Ellison and Yakwe were out of their league against Nova.
I love Tariq Owens moxie but without another 20 pound weight gain he will continue to be bullied.
Hopefully we can get one two transfers with mature bodies to compensate for our softness.

As far as our three point defense is concerned we need to:

.
1.Stop falling into the middle to help out. Takes too long to get to the shooter in the corner
2.Stop going behind the pick. .
3.Stay on your feet. Stop jumping for fakes.

Exactly right. That was Rodriquez who stood their daydreaming while Hart flew by with a putback. Didn't it remind you of our poor rebounders, especially Yakwe.

After tonight's game, Jalen Brunson was asked how Villanova was able to set the tone so early in the game. His response "It all starts with our defense. We don't even worry about our offense, We just come out and play intense defense". I'm paraphrasing, but you get the point.

Yes, it sounds very familiar.

Mullin and staff should go see UVA in the NCAA playoffs and observe their tight man to man defense. Just watch how they switch and still get back to their man after a pick. And something we never did they will stay in front of their man not waving olay.

Good start Jack. What are you doing this summer? LOL. Maybe you can get on CM and staff to get this fixed. The wide open 3 is driving me crazy.
