BET-Villanova, Thur. Mar. 9, Noon, FS1/970AM

Just another game on the DVR that I can fast forward through then hit delete. Game after game, the defense makes someone who is averaging less than double digits look like a superstar. Some of those with big games were in the middle of big slumps. Part of it is being over-matched, but it seems like more than a coincidence that no one plays defense on the team. if you have enough athletes to win 7 conference games, giving up more than 100 points and allowing the opposition to shoot an incredibly high percentage is just atrocious.

this morning I was happy that we beat Gtwown and an upbeat mood. I'll be more rational by the weekend but FUCK THAT right now. What a pitiful display today. I'm not sure I have ever been so embarrassed walking out of MSG. What a freaking horrible game. Nova OWNED us and made us their biatch

Good thing I didnt stay out to drink otherwise I'd probably be in either some back alley somewhere or in a hospital in a coma. And in that coma I would play better defense than we did today

Well, I went to this game after all, and I didn't have high expectations for a win. My best hope was we'd make a good showing and show some of that fire that was exhibited last night to let Nova know that SJU is on the move.

Last night the team showed up, and I didn't. Today, the reverse.

Okay, when the dust settles we should all be proud of the job our guys did - everything about this team was better this year, from the coaches on down to the guys on the court. I believe we have a real coach now, whereas I wasn't so sure earlier this year, and we have some great building blocks to go forward.

Sorry but it is not coaching. You want to say Mullin is not inspiring effort, ok, but we have guys not interested in playing defense. Ahmed opens the game up letting Jenkins shoot two rocking chair 3's and biting for a pump fake for the 6,432 time this year. That is effort, focus, and commitment, not coaching.
when they score 100 + and aren't the first team to do it part of it is coaching

well that makes me feel good since our defense didnt improve from last year with more talent

winner of the 8-9 game needs to play at 7pm the next day vs 1 seed ( not making excuses but that just needs to be done )

LOL... just saw the SJU Band on Fox and Friends flanked by SJU, Butler and Seton Hall Cheer squads. You wouldn't even know the ACC Tournament was in town!
are they getting good attendance in bklyn ?

Opening Night comparisons: Big East 14K+ vs. ACC 8k+
Last Night for ACC a near sellout; with 15 teams and 18K seats they should be able to sellout

Just remember that Mullin played an uptempo game at GS. His trademark may likely be that we socre a lot of points but also give up a lot of points too. Short possessions and racehorse basketball will do that.

While I admit that we did not play tough team oriented help defense much of the year, there were a lot of bright spots.where the team actually did play good defense. Owens is a defender, Yakwe to me at least, works very hard at guarding his man in the interior, and I don't remember a backcourt for us that picked so many pockets off the dribble or by doubling down.

I'm not going to sit here and be critical of getting our assess kicked by the defending national champions and current #2 team in the country who may just repeat. We have maybe 2 roster players that are capable of significant run with Nova, and given their current roster I'm not sure either would have started this year. We just did not have the talent to play them competitively, with or without strong defense.

I hear you but for me to see measurably better defensive improvement I need to see better defensive stats than last year

The quick turn around is tough but Vill had to play an away game after winning 15 league games to SJU's 7. Wright comes across as a very likable person but he doesn't hold the ball when the game is out of hand. His players continue to play at full speed and the results speak for themselves.
His first line of subs shot sixteen for eighteen for fifty two points. For some reason he doesn't like to play players ten to thirteen. The guy is a friendly assassin.
As Lou once told Jim Calhoun-"You coach your team and I'll coach mine".

I knew Wright was not going to hold back once the post season started. He is trying to get his guys to play all 40 minutes of a game, and not let up start to finish. The game could have been over in the first half, but he wasn't about to let a 26 point lead become 12 with 16 minutes left in the game, so to get them tournament ready, just kept at it all game. I don't think they were running up the score. They took a lot of threes and they are just a superior basketball team to us. They are not playing for respect, they are getting ready to defend the NCAA championship.

Yes BOE
and your comments were articulately expressed in a realistic yet upbeat way
Thanks
It's " all good"...the staff, the recruiting, the fans, AND the direction!
Another positive step this summer, another positive step Autumn 2017...
We are getting there and when we are " there",

Sorry but it is not coaching. You want to say Mullin is not inspiring effort, ok, but we have guys not interested in playing defense. Sorry but I disagree. If you want to blame the coach for not motivating effort from the players, I understand that, don't agree necessarily, but I understand. But when I see the lack of effort this team played with too much of the time, I put it on the players. Now again, the coaches recruited the players and if you want to take that angle to blame, I get that too. But at the end of the day, the only player I fully respect on this years team is Owens, the only player to me who can look in the mirror and can say he consistently left it on the court on both ends. Certainly not our most talented or best player but if the rest committed like he did we would have had a significantly better year and I would feel a lot more positive about the improvement we made. For those who said last nights win made for a successful season, if not for Owens' block Peak would have laid the ball in and we walk away first round losers again, that's how close that scenario played out. With 6 seconds on the clock and taking the ball out at mid court he got to the rim so fast Gtown still had time for a second chance to score after the block scrum. We won and that was great, no question, but the utter lack of effort today left a bad taste in my mouth.

Agree with Ownes but we will just have to agree to disagree about coaching defense because if that was the case then Al Lobalbo to use an SJU example is completely irrelevant as well as plenty of coaches who have a defensive identity

My biggest problem with the defense is we didnt improve from last year with better players so I'm not exactly sure what happened over the summer when supposedly most of the work is being done

I was thinking the very same thing. St. John's still would have lost to 'Nova, but I think it would have been more competitive. St. John's was playing their 2nd game in two days while 8 of the other 9 teams, were yet to play a game yet. Xavier gets to play an evening game. Why not St. John's? That's what pisses me off.

I like this. If Lavin was still the coach, we would get two analogies, six cliches and a riddle. With Mullin, we get a straight and simple statement of what's wrong and a declaration that it will be addressed.

it's nice to hear but it wasn't addressed this summer and our defense was just as bad last year. fingers crossed we actually work on it and improve

I get not "letting up" no matter what, but with 2-3 minutes to go, don't play to try to double the other team's score. That to me is bush league.

I thought Wright had a little more class than that.

A few years from now, when the tables are turned, I hope we don't do this to Nova.

Been hearing about turning the tables for a long time. Do you really think in a couple of years we will be in a position to beat Nova by 41 points? They have beaten us what 18 straight. I'll take a one point win over them and be extremely happy.
