BET (GAME TIME) #7 / #9 Creighton, Thur., Mar. 12, Noon, FS-1 / 970 AM
Man, I can't believe what happened over the past day. Still trying to process.

Really tough to think what could've been (as are at least 70-80 other teams), but we won big yesterday and also had a great half today. It's important that those games happened because they helped solidify this year as a successful one. Imagine if the cancellations happened a week earlier and we didn't beat Marquette, Georgetown, or half beat Creighton. The board should be optimistic for the next several months! This was the absolute best possible ending to the season given what we were capable of controlling.
Correct but what a total downer. The boys were on a roll. Whos knows where that ride would have taken is. Im confident we would have been player butler or prov tomorrow night for a chance to play for the big east crown. It hurts to think about.
Didn't realize all you guys had sons on the team. ;) :)
There were apparently a lot of Carahers and O'Connells in that pic.

“This is a situation that I have never experienced before and I know our team has never experienced it,” St. John’s coach Mike Anderson said in a statement. “Our guys are very disappointed. We feel like we’ve been playing some of our better basketball, but at the same time this is bigger than basketball with this coronavirus. This has a worldwide effect and that’s a game of life. I’m glad to see our leadership made the decision to cancel the tournament. Again, we were disappointed but at the same time it’s the right thing to do. I’m just proud of our guys, the fans that came out and supported us.”

Good thing this is happening now and not down the line. It must be heartbreaking to be a team like Dayton, have a dream season that’ll never be completed. For us we can say we could’ve won the big east tournament, but it’s less of a hurt for us right now knowing we were likely NIT bound

Anyone hear why the game was canceled at the half, and not allowed to be completed?

Thought I read that they said there was little point to playing the rest since it would have no impact if rest of tourney would not continue. And did it at the half to minimize distraction on the court and for players.

Agree, Jack. I was telling some friends over dinner last night that as bad as I felt about how our season ended, I also felt awful for Dayton's players and fans. I was a magical season for them, and to see it end the way it did must be heartbreaking for them.

I'm pretty sure that Val Ackerman and staff were in conference during the game and as soon as the decision was made to pull the tournament, they quickly decided not to play the rest of a now meaningless game.

It was a solid decision to end the game, as weird as it was to be there in the first place, and even weirder to have a game canceled at halftime.

Marcellus took a horrible spill, that turned out to be a flagrant foul at the end of the first half. Had he been injured seriously from a spill like that in the second half of a game and the news got out that they knew they were cancelling it but allowed it to finish, there would be all sorts of hell to pay.

I joked that they cancelled the game out of fear that Marcellus would return the flagrant foul and kill half the Creighton team in process.

I thought, that unless there was a need to cancel for safety purposes, it was disrespectful to the teams and fans attending and watching on tv.

Knight, that was also my initial gut reaction, but when you consider the risk of injury to players (and potential additional exposure to fans) in what had become a completely meaningless game, the decision was the right one.
Yes safety first, that aside think we were about to do something special in the tournament
While I was pissed of that the game was canceled because I wanted to see us beat Creighton again, it was the right decision as noted by several posters.

It's ironic that it should happen just at the point where we were starting to peak as a team. I think that we had the potential to make a lot of noise in that tournament had it been played to conclusion.

The good news is that we should be in a position to be very competitive next year with most of our core players returning and a good crop of recruits joining them.

Coach CMA, you've done a great job this year and have us pointing in the right direction for the future. Kudos to you and your staff. The future of St John's basketball is very bright.

For our program, this was a great ending to our season. 3 wins in 4 games and a solid first half against the top seed who we has beaten soundly a few weeks ago.

There is a fair chance the second half would not have gone well, and had we won, could have easily gotten soundly beaten in the semis.

As evidenced by all the enthusiasm here, this was a great ending. Team playing well, ending on a high note.

Now what we really need are more than 1000 season nrw or returning season ticket holders, and students to show up at games. Great programs need support.
