(BET) #4 Seton Hall, Thur., Mar. 14. 2:30p, FS-1

I coached BB (mostly unsuccessfully) 8-10 year old girls about 25+ years ago, so I'm rusty. BUT= if I was CRP:

I would throw a box and one at Richmond now and then to try to throw him off his game.

Watch, if CRP does this even once, I'll go back into coaching. LOL
Lol... not sure i can ever remember a High Major College team playing a Box and one....

normally reserved for CYO when you got one kid who can play and 4 others that can't catch or dribble...

In Curry's jr year at Davidson... there was a team that doubled him the entire game... they lost by 30+... but he held Curry to almost nothing lol

The triangle and 2 has been working wonders on my kids 6th and 4th grade rec teams where there is mandatory equal playing time as the best players can’t play more than half the game.

Don’t think this will work in college but if we’re talking a one off to throw them off who knows

The Johnnies shot 53% from the field and 41% from three during the five-game winning streak. This is well above their 45% and 33.6% for the full season. It was helpful to have three of the five games against the two worst defensive teams in the league. And Creighton gave St John's space to make open shots at MSG. Butler defends the three well, but they are third from the bottom of the league on defensive field goal percentage.

This game will present the Johnnies with a greater challenge than any of these past five games. SHU does not give you any space to make shots.

The three times in one year may help as RP has likely figured out ways to beat them. I think the Johnnies need to get the pace of the game above the 70s and shoot in the high 40% or above. St John's has to figure out how to score on this team. One other thing to keep in mind is that SHU has the worst three-point stats in the league - % wise and in number made. They do shoot fouls and two-point field goals well. Maybe a zone would be the way to go. I also hope that RP works the refs this game as SHU fouls Soriano off the ball a lot. This was a key in that come back at UBS. I would like to see RP call that out from the start.

This will be the toughest game since that ugly evening at UBS.

didn't we not even get into the BET once or more back in the day when the league was a behemoth.
Unfortunately we did not qualify in 2004, 2006, and 2008. And of course in 2005 we did not participate because of self imposed sanctions stemmed from the Honest Abe fiasco.

Four years of not being included in the Big East Tournament in NYC. It’s understandable why most are ornery when it comes to our beloved program.

Great insight, zone might be a good idea at least part time. Press very little maybe strategically but only now and then.

Coach Pitino is no Boeheim or Hurley when it comes to getting on the refs but Jay Wright did it and CRP can do it too, I agree they maul Joel.

Thanks for that history espken, I blanked out on those daze,

I was the founder of the feast for a group of about 12 workmates and Big East guys (St. John's but various other BE schools) back in those 2004-2008 inglorious days.

So the guy that lined everything up, got the tickets, made the dinner and hotel reservations, more times than not didn't even have a seat at the table.

Looking back on it now, my wife was right when back then she said "Why are you bothering?" I shouldn't have.

I don't view Richmond as the sort of dynamic scorer who calls for that. He's more of a "does everything very well" guy, a real stat sheet stuffer. I would just throw a couple of different defenders at him (probably Taylor and Luis, primarily, you need the length against him) and find the right matchups for the rest of that lineup (probably Ledlum on Davis) and play tough defense, throw in the zone and matchup zone as well.

The real question to me is how to use the press. The Hall has no depth, so in theory it is a team to use the press against. But on the other hand this is a game where every easy basket and every turnover is going to be hugely important - and our press gives up some easy baskets.

Going to be an interesting game. See y'all there Thursday afternoon!

Jay Wright not only did it but single handly won the Villanova game against us 2 years ago. Posh was killing Villanova and we
were up double digits. No matter what Wright did they could not stop Posh. Posh was outplaying everyone on Villanova.
Wright knows if he doesn’t get Posh in foul trouble and disqualified they loose. He’s working the refs like crazy and Iron Mike is not
saying a word. We all know what’s happens next. Posh is out of the game and we loose our 15 point lead. I was mad at Wright but
more at the refs because they let him decide the game. With Pitino hopefully something like that never happens to us again.
i know people will say that’s part of the game but the Coaches Crying is awful to see

who guards Daws (sp), he can hurt his team but he can also very well hurst us. Dingle and DJ not great options. Maybe Wilcher.

Dingle, DJ and Wilcher can't guard a fire hydrant, that's the problem. I would put Soriano on Bediako, Ledlum on Davis, Luis on Richmond, Taylor on Wusu, and Jenkins on Dawes and hope for the best. Or go zone. And maybe try to run them. Try to steal a few minutes from Dunlap and maybe Traore for their length.

Defense is the key to our offense and high shooting pct over last 5 games.
1)Have to come out and defend the 3 from tip off. SHU guards too quick for us. Switch up zone and man and i even like idea of box and one on kadary to try!
2)Cant leave a man open in corner to shoot open threes.
3) We lose good coverage when switching on picks and it leads ro easy baskets for opp.
4) Since Joel comes out to top of key so much I feel it leaves hole in middle on D. I think his best shot blocking D was when he was stationed under basket primarily. He cant guard 1s or 2s so why do it?Also Ive seen too many easy layups slip in behind an unaware Ledlum or Luis when Joel at top of key
5) Need to keep SHU off balance by changing defenses constantly, leaving NO pattern they can abuse.
6) Re our Dance chance. I think we have a distinct advantage over other schools without a tourney history or HOF Coach. Look at NET rankings for the likes of Izzo,Calipari,Few,Nova. Maybe higher than they should be if no history nor HOF coaches. Tourney needs a Pitino-Calipari matchup or a Pitino-Pitino matchup or even Pitino-Izzo matchup! Its good TV!

Georgetown used a Box and one against us to shut down Mullin in the Final Four in 1985 (and earlier games that year, I believe). It worked, unfortunately.
I don't remember a.box and 1 but i do remember their game plan was to let anyone besides Mullin and Berry beat them. Maybe a triangle and 2? Doesn't matter. Patrick Ewing was so imposing on defense could have played a triangle and none and still beaten us. Although history will show we had far more nba talent than GT

emember their game plan was to let anyone besides Mullin and Berry beat them.
John Thompson Jr. said their game plan, was to follow Mullin around the floor on offense and on defense and to elbow him, knee him and otherwise physically maul him as much as possible.

And it worked, Mullin got hit with more elbows in his Georgetown years than Carter has pills.
