Baylor

They have six weeks to put it together.

It's a week into the season. South Florida lost by 18 to Central Florida and 5 to Central Michigan. Georgetown beat Duquense by six and Liberty by 9. Nova lost to Bama by 22. Notre Dame lost to St Joe's by 9

You get nearly doubled up in rebounds but play a poker game with the NCAA to save one scholarship. Unbelievable.

3 point defense and rebounding did us in at this tournament.

We actually didn't get beat that bad three point wise. D-Lo was 6-7 I think and Phil also hit a couple. It was the rebounding. And I agree with the poster that said playing poker with the NCAA for one scholarship when your youre getting doubled up in rebounds with a 6'8 240lb guy sitting on your bench is ridiculous.

Looking at the box score the 61% 3PT FG s disgusting. I can't remember the last time I saw a team make so many 3's in the NBA or college at such a high percentage. When your 3 pt shooting is almost 10 pts better than your FG shooting (on a great shooting day), you don't lose.

I know these past 2 are games that are very understandable losses, but I'm lowering my expectations severely until we actually play a full 40 minutes and beat our first legitimately good team i.e a ranked opponent or a Big East team better than SH, Rutgers, Prov, DePaul.

Florida Gulf Coast, one of the cupcakes on our scgedule is beating Duke by three at Duke halfway through the first half. They shoot threes!!

What really pisses me off is the headline on ESPN "St. John's blown out"...if you watched the game you know it was a tic for tac game until the final few minutes. Why can't the headline be much more accurate and say "Baylor pulls away from St. John's late"?

They will probably shoot 75% from 3 against us knowing our team. Maybe 95% if they are hot!

Even with going 1-2 in this tournament, I am very excited about our chances going forward. The rebounding needs to improve significantly and that ultimately was the deciding factor in todays game. This matchup zone, 1-3-1, 1-2-2, is only effective against teams that do not shoot well from 3. I understand that we had to play it to contain 2 of the top 5 point guards in the nation because D-LO and Phil would have had trouble keeping jackson and Canaan in front of them. Once we get branch who has a reputation as a terrific on the ball defender you will see us throwing multiple defences at teams to confuse them and turn people over. Baylor had a extremely tall and athletic front line so it was surprising to see us get owned on the boards especially with obpeka in foul trouble. This is not last years team, we have depth, we have more talent, players have improved, especially Phil Greene, he destroyed pierre jackson today. I have no doubt we will make the tournament with or without sanchez.

I completey agree with Westchester Joe.Once Sanchez and Branch are on board we need to go man to man to use our atheletism and length to its fullest and have our inside players block and alter shots and be in a better position to rebound missed shots. Look at how the Miami Heat make Steve Novak a non factor in the playoffs last yearand how D'Angelo was harassed by Baylor tonight.

This tournament went about as expected. I think we could have won against Murray but did not close the deal. Here we were mostly outplayed by a better team, but the guards kept us in the game with hot shooting. It is early yet and I think we are going to improve and likely will be a very good team.

I posted the below statement in a thread before the Murray game I believe it still applies:

In fact the remaining teams in this tourney Murray plus Colorado and Baylor all made it to the round of 32 in last year's NCAA tournament (Baylor went all the way to the elite eight). A win against any of them would be a feather in this young group's cap. That being said I believe we are capable of pulling an upset and winning against any of these three if we play at our best. I like what I see here and think there is a big upside to this team if we continue to grow, remain healthy and add back some of our ineligible players.

No doubt we will make the tournament? I think we have to relax. Right now we are playing good teams close, but rolling over and playing dead in the last 5 minutes. We can't rebound and there is no evidence it will get any better. Our opponents are shooting so well from 3 that it almost seems like the ball has a GPS device in it to find the net every time. Allowing a barrage of 3's and being submissive in the rebounding game is a recipe for disaster. Would not be surprised to see a similar Big East conference record to last year's unless this team suddenly remembers how to rebound and stop the opponent from making every 3 they throw up.

Outsized today

Weren't outsized....we were outworked today, especially on the boards. These kids need to learn that they can't get by on athleticism alone anymore.

Some rebounds were due to not boxing out but many were just because they were bigger and stronger than we are. Although there were a few defensive lapses, I think they played as hard as they could.

I was talking for the entire tournament. CoC actually took the same corner 3s that Murray State took. They just didn't fall for them.

And my biggest problem with our 3 point defense is that the majority of them were simply wide open.

In 2 consecutive games we gave up 3 pointers off of in bound plays. That is just unacceptable. Those kinds of mistakes can be corrected with discipline. It was just tough to watch as I'm sure we all saw them coming.

The announcers kept talking about our lack of depth but I totally disagree. This team is deep, even with Gift being screwed. But guys were being played big minutes and it caught up to some of them in the end.

playing a matchup zone makes it more difficult to rebound, doesn't excuse the in abilty to put a body on a person but when your tallest player is in foul trouble early against a huge front line, you are going to get out boarded. I love our guards but they are scoring guards, D-LO does a great job of playing the passing lanes but he isn't fast enough to keep up with jackson or Canaan and neither is phil. Once we get Branch we can deviate from the zone and play more man to man defense. I really don't understand the negative undertone of some of these messages. Yea we were 1-2 but there are so many more positives to take away from these first few games than negatives.
