Bahamas Tourney

“St. John’s brought a 4-0 record and a No. 22 national ranking to the Bahamas last week for three games in four days. The Red Storm went 1-2 in those contests — which could be viewed as a measuring stick — and wound up out of the AP Top 25 when Monday’s rankings were released.

The Red Storm lost their first game to No. 13 Baylor in the worst and most painful way. After giving away an 18-point first-half lead and allowing the Bears to extend the game into a second overtime, Zuby Ejiofor missed two free throws with 4.1 seconds left and Baylor’s Jeremy Roach nailed a three-pointer at the buzzer for a 99-98 win.

There were a few things that deserved scrutiny. Baylor coach Scott Drew asked for a review of something before Ejiofor’s free throws, a delay that Rick Pitino compared with “being iced.” And then there was the matter of the clock not starting right away after Ejiofor missed his second free throw.

That said, it was no surprise when St. John’s appeared in the “also receiving votes” section of Monday’s rankings. The Red Storm received a total of 10 points, leaving them in 38th place, a point behind Georgia.

1. Have the results of the trip changed expectations?

Even though the loss to Baylor came on a buzzer-beater in double overtime, it was still the first blemish on St. John’s resume. Bouncing back from a gut-punch loss with a resounding win over Virginia indicated the team has a strong constitution. But no one knows how the loss to a Georgia team in a very strong SEC will affect St. John’s.

If the Bulldogs end up at the bottom of the conference, there could be a toll from a mistake-laden, poorly executed three-point loss. A year ago, losses to Michigan and Boston College — both of which ended up having poor seasons — took a toll on the Red Storm when they were evaluated by the NCAA Tournament selection committee.

2. Where is Kadary Richmond?

Richmond was a first-team All-Big East selection for Seton Hall last season because he excelled at scoring, assisting and rebounding. He became a national story by transferring to a conference rival and is supposed to be St. John’s best player, but no one has seen that guy through seven games.
In the loss to Baylor, he shot 4-for-11 and had 14 points, seven assists and three turnovers. Against Georgia, he shot 1-for-8 with two assists and three turnovers.

Pitino has made veiled suggestions that he is not in shape yet for grueling games. He needs to get there for St. John’s to win.

3. St. John’s fan base is highly underrated

Despite an almost steady decline for 25 years — the Steve Lavin seasons being the exception — there still is a vibrant St. John’s fan base. These people spent their hard-earned bucks to turn out in the Bahamas, and their resounding support of Ejiofor was evident. The junior led the Red Storm with 22 points and eight rebounds against Georgia, going 12-for-13 from the free-throw line.”

I think the answer to #1 is yes, and I think its a good thing. We have a HOF coach, an expensive NIL roster (saying that as a good thing), and we're clearly the most talented team in more than a decade.

I don't know if this mystery has been solved, but I was at the game and was asked this question. The only thing I can think of was on the last play that he was taken out, I recall him making some face of disgust and disagreement about being taken out of the game. Maybe the coach t-d him up for that.

I've been around this site for a few decades, but I don't post very often. Just wanted to say a few things about this Bahamas trip.

  • We have some friggin awesome fans. Those three games were basically home games with the high percentage of Johnnies fans and the noise and energy they brought to the games. I met a bunch of them and they are really passionate. Some, not so good at blackjack, but I'd rather lose my money with them at my table then anybody else.
  • I've suffered through many years of hope and losing, hope and losing,... This feels different. Yeah, we got a couple early L's, but I think this team will be way better in March.
  • The players are good character kids. I stopped a few of them in the hallway to congratulate them and wish them well, and I was impressed with their gratitude and demeanor. I gambled next to some of them. I observed how team-oriented they are and get along with each other. I met their wonderful families. These are good kids, and we should be behind them 100%.
  • I don't know if this was mentioned earlier, but both of the facilities were a bit rough. Slippery/wet floors, clocks that didn't work well. Yeah, it's on the players to overcome, but it does add a bit of randomness to the outcome. And like my cards at blackjack, luck wasn't on our side.
  • Pitino wants to win badly. His wife wants him to win badly. She was next to me in the closing minutes of the Baylor game. She was the most nervous fan in the building. While some of his decisions can and have been questioned, he deserves 1000% of our support. He is the savior of this program.
  • Repole went to all three games. Thank you, Mike, for all you've done for this program.
  • New AD Ed Kull - great guy. Spoke to him at the bar, pre-game and he came over to our table at dinner after the Virginia win to thank us for supporting the team.
  • Great to see an old classmate out to support the team. Shawnelle Scott - class act.
  • Great to see my orthopedic surgeon at the games. The esteemed Dr Answorth Allen, huge hoops fan, doctor to elite athletes, and quite possibly there to observe his handiwork. If you need a surgeon for a sports injury, look no further.
  • Lastly, the greatest show of fan support I've ever been a part of, was the chant for Zuby before the Virginia game. It was started by a few guys a few rows in front of me, and everyone immediately connected with the sentiment and joined in furiously. It was emotional for Zuby and we all felt it. Bravo! I sat buy the Zuby family at the Georgia game. They are really nice. I want one of those Hawaiian Zuby shirts - please put them up for sale!
Let's go Johnnies!
Most likes ever, and well deserved.

There are many coaches his equal in this conference. It's one thing the conference has never lacked. Gotta win with talent now, e.g. yukon.

It may just be me, but this felt like the early heartbreaking losses to Purdue and Stanford in November 1998. I am disappointed with the outcome of the the two losses but walk away with the feeling that there is a ton of potential with this group. My one concern is that we may not match up when facing a physical team where the whistle is loose. We have height, length and athleticism, but we are not very strong. Other than that, there is a lot more to like than to dislike.

I will gladly take another 1998 season and post-season!

Really glad that the school booked this MTE as it was the best vacation I've been on. Obviously frustrating that we were THIS close to upsetting Baylor, and then the Georgia loss really put a damper on things (I left the day before at least), but we clearly belonged and the rest of the resort was incredible. Lots of family activities for my wife and almost 2 year old daughter (feeding flamingos, turtles, etc.), really nice beaches, so many pools and waterparks (we weren't even able to visit them all in 4-5 days), etc. Also thought it was cool seeing so many Johnnies fans and players walking around throughout the resort.

Even though we lost a game in the most painful way possible, my family will absolutely sign up for these again in the future (as long as we have a good team). Vegas next year we will unfortunately pass on (not great for a family trip), but I understand why the school is booking it as it's huge for NIL. I do hope though that MTEs like Maui adapt to the NIL model and give fans (and teams) more opportunities to go on incredible trips like this one.
