Bahamas Tourney

Most of us cautioned against early season exuberance, saying we really wouldn't know anything about this team's 24-25 outlook till after this trip. If we left it at the two game tournament, the outlook would still be positive. A qustionable buzzer beating 3 after the uncharitable charity stripe failure against a supposed top team. A blowout bounceback against UVA. OK, we can deal.

Adding GA turned out to be the most revealing barometer, not because we lost, but because how badly we played against a mediocre team. Compound that by saying Georgia's best player, a possible lottery pick, was neutralized by Zuby, who helped foul him out with 13 free throws. If you had a crystal ball and only knew that you'd guess we'd win this one going away.

We caused 24 turnovers and committed 11 (Zuby had 5). But Georgia shot 48% from the field to our 31%. If the entire game looked like a mess gor us, it was because we followed a 7-23 (30.5%) first half with a 12-38 (31.6%) second half.

Lots of blame being heaped on Khadary but the reality is after zuby (5-8) and rj (6-13) the rest of the team shot 20% (8-40) for the game. That's right - 20%.

Now that players are being paid, the reason NIL backers went deep on Khadary is so we would have a reliable scorer, a guy you could pencil in for 15 pts, a guy who would lead in crunch time, etc etc etc. So far if you had to guess, you would say his final college year will be his biggest payday in his life and our ROI not very good. So as much as anyone, Richmond must steo it up and lead.

What about everyone else? Scott went 5-14. Remove that and the rest (sans zuby and Luis) went 3-26, yup about 11% from the field.

Big wakeup call for Johnnies.

Time for Zach's next article to say how maybe a 22 ranking caused the players to over inflate just how good they are or aren't.

As Looie would say, "Time to go back to the lab (gym), and figure this out (practice practice practice)"

Being Thanksgiving, Frank Perdue would say, "It takes a tough bird to make a tender chicken." Our tough bird is a HOF coach. Get. It. Done.
Excellent post. Having not seem much of Richmond prior, was terrible disappointed. Pitino made some bad decisions over the weekend (not going to harp on inbounding the ball to Zuby at the end of the Baylor game) but can someone please explain to me why Smith was on the bench for the entire end of the Georgia game in lieu of Richmond? Can blame both losses on bad coaching decisions, which bring me to Dunlap. If he wasn't 100%, why insert him at all. Pitino mentioned getting Ayo and Glover some minutes. Well........ And not playing Prey, the team's present surprise so far? Should have come home 3-0. Oh what could have been.

Sorry, but if there was ever a game where stats lie, it was this one. This game was won and lost by toughness and effort, one team challenged, the other team didn’t accept that challenge, basic Fight or Flight.
Shooting comes and goes, fight and desire don’t and that is really all any person controls in any endeavor,
Apologies to those who think Pitino is beyond reproach but the Johnnies didn’t need more shooters, they needed more fighters. Any old school playground 101.

"Apologies to those who think Pitino is beyond reproach". I'm not in that group. As someone who only watches St. John's basketball, this is only my 2nd season watching Pitino. Sure as hell didn't impress me last season, twice throwing his players under the bus twice. Had big expectations for this season, but this guy's no Jay Wright. Just some awful in game decisions down there. Maybe age has caught up to him, but I've seen nothing in a little over a year to impress me.

Aaron Scott actually said as much Logan. What does that tell you.

think that its a Mature reality check... This player, and hopefully the rest of them, realize they need to "want" it more going forward if they are going to succeed. Appreciate his candidness at the mic...

Hopefully they take this week to understand how they need to approach every game.

My guess is Pitino was pissed off at Smith for allowing the shot clock to expire at the end of the first half. I think Smith confused the shot clock with the game clock which had 1.8 seconds more on it. Just a guess on my part.

He had an inbounds pass/rebound that was passed to him and he lost the handle. I think Georgia scored on the ensuing possession. Send a message for 5 minutes. Not the whole half.

So , take him out , scream at him to get his head out of his ass and then put him back in. But, you don’t blow a chance to win an important game just to prove the point.

How about sending a freaking message to Kadary. 3pnts and 2 assists in 35 minutes?

He played so good for shu and sucks for us.

Time to bench his ass and send a message.

Source? In another thread this was called asinine and fake news.
A friend directly behind the bench ''heard '' the assistant coaches suggest putting Smith back in. Pitino said no. My friend doesn't lie. Pitino wanted to prove a point with his boy Kadary, who by the way leads the team in minutes played.

I don't know if this mystery has been solved, but I was at the game and was asked this question. The only thing I can think of was on the last play that he was taken out, I recall him making some face of disgust and disagreement about being taken out of the game. Maybe the coach t-d him up for that.

I've been around this site for a few decades, but I don't post very often. Just wanted to say a few things about this Bahamas trip.

  • We have some friggin awesome fans. Those three games were basically home games with the high percentage of Johnnies fans and the noise and energy they brought to the games. I met a bunch of them and they are really passionate. Some, not so good at blackjack, but I'd rather lose my money with them at my table then anybody else.
  • I've suffered through many years of hope and losing, hope and losing,... This feels different. Yeah, we got a couple early L's, but I think this team will be way better in March.
  • The players are good character kids. I stopped a few of them in the hallway to congratulate them and wish them well, and I was impressed with their gratitude and demeanor. I gambled next to some of them. I observed how team-oriented they are and get along with each other. I met their wonderful families. These are good kids, and we should be behind them 100%.
  • I don't know if this was mentioned earlier, but both of the facilities were a bit rough. Slippery/wet floors, clocks that didn't work well. Yeah, it's on the players to overcome, but it does add a bit of randomness to the outcome. And like my cards at blackjack, luck wasn't on our side.
  • Pitino wants to win badly. His wife wants him to win badly. She was next to me in the closing minutes of the Baylor game. She was the most nervous fan in the building. While some of his decisions can and have been questioned, he deserves 1000% of our support. He is the savior of this program.
  • Repole went to all three games. Thank you, Mike, for all you've done for this program.
  • New AD Ed Kull - great guy. Spoke to him at the bar, pre-game and he came over to our table at dinner after the Virginia win to thank us for supporting the team.
  • Great to see an old classmate out to support the team. Shawnelle Scott - class act.
  • Great to see my orthopedic surgeon at the games. The esteemed Dr Answorth Allen, huge hoops fan, doctor to elite athletes, and quite possibly there to observe his handiwork. If you need a surgeon for a sports injury, look no further.
  • Lastly, the greatest show of fan support I've ever been a part of, was the chant for Zuby before the Virginia game. It was started by a few guys a few rows in front of me, and everyone immediately connected with the sentiment and joined in furiously. It was emotional for Zuby and we all felt it. Bravo! I sat buy the Zuby family at the Georgia game. They are really nice. I want one of those Hawaiian Zuby shirts - please put them up for sale!
Let's go Johnnies!

Most likes ever, and well deserved.

It may just be me, but this felt like the early heartbreaking losses to Purdue and Stanford in November 1998. I am disappointed with the outcome of the the two losses but walk away with the feeling that there is a ton of potential with this group. My one concern is that we may not match up when facing a physical team where the whistle is loose. We have height, length and athleticism, but we are not very strong. Other than that, there is a lot more to like than to dislike.
