Available Lead Guards

Alright so we know 3 mid major guys we're after now. Two of them pretty much confirmed interest and one assumed for now.

Jason Drake - Drexel
- Big leap from his Soph to Jr seasons after transferring from Cleveland State to Drexel
- Led Drexel in usage rate and shot volume
- Decent Assist and Turnover rates
- Drexel played one of the 10 slowest paces in the country both overall and offensively
- Decent at the rim at low(ish) volume, lots of midrange. Doesn't get to the line much
- Hit nearly 40% of his 3s, with only 2 of 3 being assisted
- Flat out bad defensive metrics
- Ranked 651st overall transfer by EvanMiya

Dylan Darling - Idaho State
- Spent two years at Wazzu, played a bit in his FR season and was terrible, almost no burn in his SO season
- Led Idaho St in usage rate and shot volume
- Top 30 Assist rate in the country. Very good turnover rate as well
- Idaho State also played very slow
- Shot 60% at the rim (almost all unassisted), lots of midrange volume. Got to the line a ton and made 81% from there
- Shot 36% from 3 on good volume with less than half of his makes being assisted.
- Weak but not horrifying defensive metrics
- Apparently fans on the Idaho State board thought he was a selfish player
- Ranked 252nd overall transfer by EvanMiya

Jordan Ross - Saint Mary's
- Big bump in minutes and efficiency from FR to SO years at SMC
- Played next to Marciulionis who was their primary PG.
- Decent Assist and TO rates given his role
- Numbers took a pretty steep dive against better competition
- Not great, not terrible finishing around the rim. Bad from the midrange
- Only made 30% of his 3s
- Slightly above average defensive metrics
- Not yet ranked by Miya as he just hit the portal minutes ago

Pretty wild Rick has publicly anointed Jackson as the PG already. Has to mean they aren't confident they will find a starting caliber one for this level and now they are spinning it that this was the plan all along. I promise this was not the plan going into the portal. Word is Rick didn't go hard for Demary because he didn't think he could play PG well enough. There is absolutely nothing to suggest that Jackson can.

This team tracks to have the lowest Assist rate of Pitino's career by far, even if they land a mid-major 15mpg pass first PG. Pitino's teams have typically always been top 150 in that category in his career except for his last 3 years at Louisville. Those 3 teams finished 66th, 42nd, and 22nd respecticely in KenPom adjusted offensive efficiency.

The big goal of this offseason was to improve the 3 point shooting. Well we have a bunch of shooters now but nobody to get them the ball. The guys we bought in are not off the dribble 3 point shooters, they are catch and shoot guys. The catch part of catch and shoot requires a pass to be thrown to you.

Sanon - 77.8% of his made 3s were assisted
Sellers - 96.6%(!)
Jackson - 73.3%
Hopkins - 100%(!) - in the last full season he played

I don't get it.
Sorry Mug but your stats are meaningless unless you have a comparative chart that a high percentage of those assists were from a point guard. If we are playing a pro ball game under Rick, there is always going to be pass to the open man scenario and with 4 good shooters on the floor......everyone will have learn a point guard's vision of the offense. Of course, if you have 4 RJ's on the floor Rick will not have much patience.
I think he wants players who will buy into what his vision is and who impress him during his very rigorous workouts.

I guess I'm just confused by this whole Jackson thing now. Is him being able to play PG a big part of the reason he's coming here? Because word was he was coming here before Lee even made his decision. So, if Lee committed here and was locked in to at least 30 mins at PG would Jackson have reconsidered. I don't understand any of this tbh
You're over thinking Ian's role.
I think we will see him more as combo guard once the lineup and 8 or 9 man rotation is settled.
A talented guard his height must be able to switch between roles for ANY shot at the NBA level.
Some of the best point guards in the NBA made that transition from 2 to 1 like
Kidd, Iverson, Paul, Stockton and Nash.
Not comparing on a talent level of course but Jackson has to learn the role eventually.

I followed Kidd, Iverson and Nash closely in college and each played the point

And things with Ian seemed locked up prior to Lee committing anyway. He said as much with Zach ("He knew he wanted St. John's after his visit."). He also told Zach he was excited to "have ball in his hands after playing off of it at North Carolina". So that can mean a number of things. Will he play the RJ role, but they're calling it point guard because they expect playmaking for others as much as for himself?

I find it very confusing that Rick would say he's the next great point guard and Ian's IG would just say "POINT GUARD". Why would a Boogie or Pettiford come here if they are also point guards? It's an odd situation. Something has to be up, which is why I mentioned the Greek kid who's more of a point forward.

Boogie nor Pettiford are/were coming here regardless of what Jackson decides. I don’t understand the repeated mention of these two who have given no indication either directly or through other channels, that they have any intention f entering the portal.

Kidd, Iverson, Paul, Stockton and Nash were all PG’s in college. Some were more shoot first PG’s but all ran their offense as PG.

Has played four full season at major college level. Don’t see any way for continued eligibility.

As I posted in this or another thread, he and others are hoping the NCAA changes eligibility to five years (something they were/are considering) or the courts will grant them additional eligibility. The courts have already changed the Juco rule which means time spent playing at a Juco does not count against the NCAA four year eligibility limit. So who knows what the courts will do.

Because Boogie is a funny name to say
