Available Lead Guards

Last year SJU went heavy on PGs, and the worry was how two-point guards, Smith and Kadary, could play together. It turned out well. This year the goal is zero. Pitino is probably just bored at this point in his career and wants to try new things.

Keeps things interesting!
Or risky

So we need a point guard. What are the attributes of a good point guard?
Ball handling, good passer, court vision, etc. What am I missing here?

I would think it’s mostly that he sold Ian on playing both guard spots. He’ll probably beat that PG drum all year regardless of where Ian plays like he’s done for Zuby playing the 4.
In an eight man rotation there is money for a natural pg at SJ.
One of the next two signings will be a pg......no doubt.

You're missing the six figure offer to get a guy and not guarantee him the starting job.
You need a guy willing to earn his minutes AFTER getting his $$ guarantee.

Pretty wild Rick has publicly anointed Jackson as the PG already. Has to mean they aren't confident they will find a starting caliber one for this level and now they are spinning it that this was the plan all along. I promise this was not the plan going into the portal. Word is Rick didn't go hard for Demary because he didn't think he could play PG well enough. There is absolutely nothing to suggest that Jackson can.

This team tracks to have the lowest Assist rate of Pitino's career by far, even if they land a mid-major 15mpg pass first PG. Pitino's teams have typically always been top 150 in that category in his career except for his last 3 years at Louisville. Those 3 teams finished 66th, 42nd, and 22nd respecticely in KenPom adjusted offensive efficiency.

The big goal of this offseason was to improve the 3 point shooting. Well we have a bunch of shooters now but nobody to get them the ball. The guys we bought in are not off the dribble 3 point shooters, they are catch and shoot guys. The catch part of catch and shoot requires a pass to be thrown to you.

Sanon - 77.8% of his made 3s were assisted
Sellers - 96.6%(!)
Jackson - 73.3%
Hopkins - 100%(!) - in the last full season he played

I don't get it.

It's the recipe for having an absolutely loaded team with a high preseason ranking, and then underachieving. ESPECIALLY since our success will be predicated on our offense being elite. Hope I'm wrong.

I feel like Hurley tried this tactic last year with his guards with none of them a natural PG outside guard of Diarra who wasn’t great. We know how that turned out for them. He changed that this year with getting Smith from Dayton, a natural, vet PG. This can’t be the final plan.

Fantastic, level headed, fact driven post from a guy who clearly is a student of the game.

I think Ian has some PG to his game. How much we shall see. He had no chance to show it at UNC. His assist stats don’t bother me at all.

I’d expect Sanon to improve in that area as well…perhaps a lot.

Sellers is a spot up guy that will be reliant on others. That’s fairly obvious.

Hopkins could be a source of some inside-out. Run some offense through him in the mid to high post. He averaged 2.3 assists as a soph and 3.0 last year in 3 games.

I’m bullish on Lefty.

I've hypothesized about this on discord and with a couple ppl. Hear me out:

-- He's signed with Rick's former club, Panathinaikos.
-- He played on last year's Greece U18 team with Lefty, and under assistant coach Ricky Johns

Could this be our "backup" plan?
