Attendance

A bit disappointed with attendance the past two games. I would hope Thursday night would be sold out. Important to show recruits on national tv.

We've been through this before...give the fans a reason to come out and they will. Let's get ranked a few times and make a few NCAA's.

In case anyone forgot, it is the Thanksgiving weekend. A lot of people are away and the students are off campus. Lets see what the attendance is going forward.

i don't think any college plays to an older crowd than st john's.

before, we had the "commuter school" excuse. now it's kids home for the holidays. this isn't michigan where kids need to take a plane to get home. our students are home in bellmore and lynbrook.

Just for giggles. I looked at the attendance for all the teams that played yesterday, and nobody had great attendance. ND had about 6k, Georgetown had 7k. I believe Maryland had a good turn out at 10k. A lot depends obviously on who one is playing as in Duke vs Louisiville. Many matchups had far less than the 4k that we had at the game!

Let professors add 5 pts to a students final grade and attendance will soar LOL WE have always been a computer school not kids confined to a campus with not much to do This is NY But even when we has teams in the top 5 attendance was not like Cuse or Georgetown

Newsman, I went to STJ when it was a commuter school, but I always flew home and back to NY, particularly when it was a short break. I knew more than a few people who did the same.

A lot of schools that have had top teams actually give any tickets to students in a lottery system because the deamnd is so high. rather than charge, they are given away. We charge something like $100 for an entire season ticket, which even for students, is not the big deal some students say it is. It's not just about winning for one season, it's creating a culture of winning where coming to a game is an event.

The "old" crowd is a holdover from the days where there wasn't a student section, and the crowd was most alumni. I remember seeing kids in their parents arms, no more than 2 or 3, and them grow up, go away to college and back. My guess is that most season ticket holders are long time attendees, who somehow weathered the Jarvis and NR years.

Those who were growing up when Namath won in 69 with the Jets, the 69 and 86 Mets, the 72 Knicks, etc. have a totally different view of those teams than guys my age. The same goes for SJ hoops. The closest I get to those days is hearing my uncles talk about how SJ used to be amazing and coming on here reading about it. Just making the NCAA tournament has been nearly impossible for SJ many years recently let alone being ranked or a real factor in the Big East. When the culture of winning returns and we expect to be ranked and/or make the tourney each year, there will be sellouts. It also has to do with the opponent. If we have a chance to upset a big time opponent like Cuse, UConn, G'Town, etc. it will be much more hyped up.

I remember two years ago when we beat Pitt at the garden, the place was packed, we just need a few signature wins and maybe some top 25 votes to fill the seats again. I have a family full of St Johns fans that live so close to Alumni Hall and they still don't go to games because they don't follow closely enough.

Understand your opinion but in truth and definition if you need your team to be ranked to get up the energy to go to a game then you're not a fan, you're a front runner.

If they don't follow the team and they don't go to games what makes them fans?

I use the term loosely, my whole family is full of alums that are familiar with the players and coaches and may get a game on tv here or there I just dont understand why they dont take adavntage of living 10 mins away from SJU. If I lived in NY I woulod make almost every game.

Just to be clear, I will go to games regardless because I am a big fan. So they don't need to be ranked for me to follow them closely but it wouldn't hurt. We must separate diehards on here from the common fan. The common fan is a frontrunner...that's just how it is. No one cared about Notre Dame now they are #1 and headed to the Champ game. Twitter, facebook, and public conversation is now full of everything ND. Common fans will only spend their money on a good product on the court that is expected to be able to beat good teams. When the Mets were actually good (very rare) in 2006, I was at the games...the place was PACKED. The stadium was shaking literally. Now they can't pay fans to go to games save for the diehards. Until we get that culture of winning again, getting ranked, being a real factor in CBB, and making tourney's, nothing will change. It's pretty logical...give the common fan a reason to root for them and they will come.

Winning will lead to better attendance. In the meantime, something needs to be done to stimulate interest...The student season tix price ($100??) seems reasonable...For those who don't buy a season pass, the game day ticket should be next to nothing...assuming season tix are in a better spot...

Also, the student events group shoukd be organizing events (e.g pregame tailgate on the great lawn etc...) to get the casual student to join in

I thought the crowd last night was pretty good. If school was in session and it wasn't Thanksgiving break I think it would have been a lot louder.
