Attendance and Atmosphere

Was there with 3 others in Section 108 last night. It was a bit subdued. But then again the game was pretty ugly.

At the very end, a very loud fan, sitting behind us, shouted very loudly at DLo, "this loss is directly on your shoulders, you were terrible Harrison, this game was lost because of you, etc."

The place was so quiet, and actually DLo was on the bench in the last minute or so with a badly banged up knee.

I thought the guy was probably right in his assessment, but his shouting it at the player was uncalled for.

Hey Brook, I think I know the fan you're talking about. I'm also in 108 and if it's the same guy, he was sitting in the row directly behind me and I thought most of his comments were inappropriate. He was really ragging on the kids. I was with my son and with less than a minute to go, I told my son I wanted to get out of there. Because if that jerk started booing our guys, I would have turned around and had words with him. That's the kind of fan we DON'T need.

The biggest problem with the cheapest seats in the building being 35 dollars is that you don't see any families at the weekday games. It's a shame and is a great way to kill a future fanbase. Give tickets away to local CYO teams and boy scout troops if you have to. I don't think I saw more than 20 kids under 16 years old at the game last night. There has to be an option to sell 15 dollar seats somewhere. I don't know if MSG is mandating closing the upper level but it's becoming a huge problem.

Only 6,707 and half seemed to be in a coma last night. Even the Daily News commented on our poor showing last night. Kudos to those who were there and made noise, it's just unfortunate that there weren't more in the house like you guys.

I was there and I don' agree that half of us were in a coma. There wasn't much to get excited about. And when there was, we were cheering and standing, trying our best to get into it. But when we did, X would come back with yet another easy lay-up and that was so discouraging.

But I thought our students did a nice job and kudos to them.

I think the crowd was looking to get into it but there was no flow and certainly no runs...the one opportunity that presented itself came in 2nd half and Mack was smart enough to call an immediate timeout

Lavin also called 2 timeouts after made baskets in the 2nd half that hurt crowd momentum a little.

If you're looking for the cause of the coma atmosphere, just look at the lackluster
performance from this team.

The coma atmosphere was there before the lackluster performance. Half of the fans who did make it into the arena were not there for the starting lineups or opening tip. .

Hey blame it on the people pouring the bronx pale ale. They took too long. Gman and Kranmars can back me up on that one :)

As a parent of a few kids that age, I can tell you that even the 7 O'Clock game has caused me problems with school the next day. The price isn't the concern at least for me. It's getting them up the next day for school. Just not worth it.

I didn't go to games on school nights until I was in high school. It can be hard the next day. In fact, even now, I won't got to a night Yankees game, if I'm working the next morning. Basketball is different, obviously.

The students who showed up showed great school spirit! Kudos and thank you to them! it didn't go unnoticed!

MSG just too big of a stage for us.

Also it's going to take a while before the new Big East starts to develop rivalries which will appeal to the casual fan.

Ehh, teams like creighton, xavier and butler are rarely going to attract the casual fan even years from now. How many new yorkers are creighton alumns?

I felt that Creighton had a lot more fans at the game compared to Xavier. Providence game should be at MSG as they probably have more Alumns working in the city.

Game was awful to watch and as others said not much of a flow to it.

I would go with the villanova model; they play mostly weeknight games on campus and then weekend games at wells fargo. I think creighton was weeknight but the rest are on weekend. They have been doing this for a while. Maybe 5 big east msg and 4 on campus. Throw in holiday festival and an non conference game that is 7 msg games.

The bottom line is to play winning basketball with solid basketball principles. The NY fan knows good basketball when he sees it, and also recognizes bad basketball when he sees it. This team does not play solid, intelligent basketball....atrocious defense, no plan on offense, terrible rebounding, cannot defend simple out of bounds plays, their foul shooting is terrible, etc. Why pay top dollar to see that kind of basketball ? It is a shame because they have talent, but the talent is not being developed. JAKAR sampson is a perfect example, he has not become a better player since the day he arrived.

I know that it is not the main factor, but having 0 players from New York doesn´t help.

Come on Gonzalo. How many NY'ers you think would be like "Oh Whitehead is on SJU. Lets go to a game." Once they see the ticket prices its a moot point. Whitehead or any NYC HS player doesn't have 5k friends, family or fans.

The ticket prices are what is really behind all of this I believe. If you cut the ticket prices down they might even gain money because so many more people would show up

Jack, I know tickets are expensive. Just about everything is in Manhattan! But I really don't think it's the ticket prices. If we were a top 10 team, at the top of the Big East, people would come and spend their money to see our guys play. We've all paid more for a product or a service if we thought the product quality was better. I believe the same holds true for sports. If we put a high quality product on the court, they will come. Just my humble opinion.

No, that's not the complete answer, but it would help Moose. Getting the one big local stud who got a lot of press in HS would help with the casual nyc basketball fan. But, a lot of things would help:

- history of recent success
- cheaper tickets
- better game times
- more high profile opponents (but heaven forbid we play Syracuse who, ya know, we have an actual 30yr rivalry with and guarantees a near sell-out).
- more nyc players
- outsourcing ticket sales from the athletic dept

Do all those things and our attendance would be fine. But for a variety of reasons not all those things are/can happen.
