Assistant

The kids are on break I believe. What does it matter right now?  The kid's over the summer are going over lots of basics, lifting and maybe some sets and positioning. Nothing Lavin, chiles and Rico can't handle.

Coach Allocco finishes his Jersey camp swing in a few weeks. Timing is perfect

Lav has maintained there would be no rush. Doug Martin might be looking in a few days if you'd rather have him...

EDIT: Martin didn't make it through the weekend

Should be noted that Elliot Pitts the Top 100 2G in the class of 13 that Allocco coached verbally popped for Arizona over the weekend.

Per multiple sources, St. John's HC Steve Lavin is strongly considering elevating Gene Keady to asst coach to replace Mike Dunlap...

I think it would be great to have Keady work directly with the kids which he is not permitted to do now.

Rothstein is mostly on the money when it comes to scoops but a big part of me was hoping Allocco got the job.

Mr. Keady is 76 years old.

He retired at Purdue 7 years ago after presumably concluding that the rigors of coaching were too much for him.

Personally I hope that Lavin hires someone that was at minimum born in the last half of the 20th birthday.

Like he was with Sampson?
I 'could' see this happening but honestly he throws ish against a wall and sees what sticks the majority of the time. And he repeats what coaches want him to say, whether its right or misdirection.

No, Otis. Gene retired because the love of his life, wife Pat Keady, was diagnosed with terminal cancer - which they then battled together for almost 4 years before she passed. The following year, he returned to basketball with Steve at SJU.

My personal feeling is that the target is still Alloco, but the timing with his current committments (De La Salle) isn't right regsarding the coming season - that if Gene is elevated its temporary (one season) measure to give us a firm disciplinarian & tactician to take over Dunlaps duties re: practice and team prep - stuff Gene Keady is in the Hall of Fame for - while the remainder of the staff (Steve, Tony, Rico) are still free to maintin their all-important recruiting responsibilities.

Just speculation, of course.

He called the Obekpa commitment which made me to believe that he was being fed info from someone in the know.

I hope he's wrong on this though.

Edit: Come to think of it, for a good month he said Obekpa was Cincy bound. He changed his tune that last week of Chris' decision.

Ehh, we'll see.

Yeah he's a trip. Two coaches will tell him the same thing and watch him run with it.

Coach Keady is one hell of coach! Period! Do not care how old he is.......is has forgotten more than many coaches know and he can be a hard ass in practices as is his rep! If it is for a year....great!

I'm with you on this one. Keady still has the energy and passion regardless of age;he would be a great choice.

I'm with you too, CR.

Retweeted by Zach B. of the NY Post that Allocco has turned down the SJU offer and will be returning to De La Salle. And that Lavin will move Keady to the asst. coach spot.
