Assistant Coaches

Yup
@AdamZagoria: Former Seton Hall/St. John's asst Dermon Player in the mix for Chris Mullin's staff, source confirms to @SNYtv

Worked for Jarvis & BobbyG at SH. This won't happen Imo.

Former right hand guy for Ernie Lorch ar Riverside. Zags is really getting odd.

Don't remember exactly but didn't his hire cause a backlash from some AAU coaches/programs? Did he bring in any prominent recruits?
There was some stir, but don't remember details. Don't remember who he recruited while here, but at Riverside he did work with Omar, Jessie, Artest & Barkley. Long time ago.

You have to understand the AAU situation in this area. They tend to be jealous and yes there were some who didn't like that St. John's was only hiring Riverside Church guys like Alex Evans and Dermon.

I thought it was something like that. Only St. Johns can hire a AAU coach and lose recruits because of it.

Because dealing with AAU coaches is like feeding seagulls. Throw a single one a friggin scrap of a sandwich and all the others care about is getting some from you too as they flock.

Well at least SH got Isaiah Whitehead out of it.

Maybe it's because SJU hires assistants for what they bring to the table, not who (comes along).

Expect coach will hire an assistant able and devoted to improving individual skills of our players. If we have had such an assistant in the past it never showed.Of course coach could fill in the blanks when not otherwise occupied

Man, that is a great analogy.

Any chance we can get 3-4 really strong assistants and pay them really well, opposed to 5-6 assistants with stretched out salaries?

You can only have three paid assistants who along with the Head Coach are allowed to recruit and instruct players on the court during games. From there you can have Director of Basketball Operations, Graduate Assistant Coach, Volunteer Assistant Coaches, Special Assistants, Video Coordinator and whatever else your budget will allow, but again those positions are limited in terms of what they are allowed to do.

Like Keady was for Lavin's staff. We had three paid assistants and Keady was a paid special assistant, but wasn't allowed to give instruction during games.

Right. And he also had Zendon in some capacity and others.

Any updates on possible assistant coaches?

Hearing Pinkney looks definite & they are working hard on Slice. Exciting times!

How are Slice and Matt A in terms of player development and in game coaching? We all know they can recruit and I'm guessing Pinkney would be a good developer of big men. Maybe Mullin is the guards guy?

I know I'm beating a dead horse, but why would Ed trade an NBA assistants job for a college assistants job even if he's pals with Chris?

If TT is indeed let go by the Bulls, Ed would likely have another NBA job in short time if not follow TT wherever he goes.

I was puzzled by this myself

Mullin made a fantastic point about how if you watch an NBA practice, you might think it's a college or high school practice. With so many one and dones, he said NBA teams have a lot of 19-21 year old kids that are immensely talented bu have really bad fundamentals and little knowledge of the game.

When you listen to him speak, you realize that this quiet kid who left here is now a seasoned professional, an executive, a guys who knows so much more about basketball than the average coach (which includes the last 5 guys we've had). There's nothing in his persona that is taking this lightly. He even fully understands his role as being an ambassador for the entire university - quite frankly everything we've been waiting for - rather impatiently at that.

I don't know if things have changed, but NBA assistant gigs were easier to get and not as sought after as high profile college assistant gigs. Unless you were the lead assistant or an heir-apparent, you were better off in college.

Would we be interested in a guy like Al Skinner (BC and Rhode Island) joining the staff ??

Al, 61, is now an assistant at Bryant College in Rhode Island

Just asking.

He would be a great addition. Could really help Chris understand how things work in College basketball. He was a winner at Rhode Island and Boston College.
