Assistant Coaches

What I am missing that there are two openings for assistants. I understand about Slice but is the final spot predicated by what happens with Slice? Many names have been thrown out there about the final AC position. Would have liked to had at least another body out there being seen and representing.

Maybe Mullin wants an NBA assistant and has to wait for the season to end next week.

.m
Obviously if this happens next week it is not the end of the world. I know this is a recruiting weekend, but what can you do?

So where is this big news and happy ending to the week that you promised us all? Or do we need more patience?

Yes

Yes. The delay, in fact, could be seen as a good sign: that Slice is in negotiations with us; that he's working on a buyout from UK; and that he's trying to get recruiting matters in order for Cal before leaving (especially with seven UK players announcing for the NBA draft). On the other hand, if he wasn't interested in coming here, we'd probably know by now, especially with this being the start of the spring signing period.

P.S. Special thanks to Paultzman, Mkras, and Paul for helping get my tech problems resolved.
Spot on post about Slice Ken.

I hope your right. It would seem to me that the second part of Ken's post makes no sense (getting recruiting in order for Cal). If you are moving to another D1 program, the faster he gets settled here the better, and bring along with you the relationships you have with targeted players.
Negotiations sometimes merit additional time as you well know. That is the part of Ken's post I agree on. Could be wrong, but sense this will get done.

My big concern is that if Cal wants to keep him, he has a much bigger checkbook to work with. It would all come down to how much Slice wants to come here. We could certainly bump him in pay, but may not be able to match a counter. Respect your opinion and information and hope you are right. It would be a huge get to have two top notch recruiters, and it's clear Mullin will be a tireless worker in that regard.

Regarding Mullin's involvement in recruiting, it's interesting. I had a conversation with Coach C's wife (the C. in Iona) after he took the job up there and commented to her that he must be inundated with work stepping up to a bigger program. She said it was actually much easier on him because he had a staff to help focus on recruiting, where at Post he had to do everything himself.

I believe Mullin will more than make up for inexperience on the bench (overstated IMO anyways) with a proven mindset to simply outwork everyone else, in the gym and out.

Agree with your entire post Beast and as every coach will attest to good players make good coaches.
Coach Mullin clearly understands what it takes to succeed and even more importantly what it takes to succeed at SJU , warts and all.
When he and I went to SJU there were no dorms , half the buildings on campus didn't exist. He is selling a far superior product then when he attended SJU. I understand the campus life may not be as good as a Duke or other schools but it is superior to what Mullin received. In order to be successful he needs to recruit to 2-3 high level players a season to SJU. Is there anyone on this board that doesn't believe he can do that ? Lavin did it his first two seasons and then the bottom fell out for a multitude of reasons which never have to be discussed and debated again. Coach Mullin and Matt A have hit the ground running faster than Usain Bolt. They picked up a very good commitment for next season at the forward spot , a potentially good player in Owens for 2016-2019 and are involved with a bunch of high level recruits for next season and beyond. As was reported earlier SJU was the first school in the gym this morning. This will be a phrase you will be hearing often.
As Logen, who I hope will return soon said a few weeks ago before his hiatus, we need a hard working staff. Well we got it in all respects.
As Marillac has often said the biggest improvement comes in the off season workouts. With Coach Mullin you better believe that will happen.
This team will continue to improve in each and every facet, recruiting, player development , coaching effort, fan support, fan engagement, monetary donations, etc.
I couldn't be more excited and confident about the future.
I am also very confident that more good news will be announced this weekend.

Whether it makes no sense or it was inarticulately expressed, I meant that Slice is still under contract to UK, and if Cal, with whom he has a tight relationship, asks him to stay on a few days longer so ensure the transition goes smoother (especially given the mass exodus of players), it might be a contributing factor to any perceived delay.

I hope that Calipari isn't trying to block Slice from attending the Diallo in home visit will Mullin. Would be a great benefit for Coach Mullin to have Slice with him next week.

Calipari is out recruiting.
So is Kenny Payne.

No sign of Slice on the road.

Nice weather in Queens on Sunday to host Mussini.

Hey, Ken. You stated it just fine, and it was a good post. I would think that whatever he is wrapping up could be done in a brief meeting, and then just like Matt A. did, bring whatever recruits he could along with him. Fred H. knew this is how it works, and so does Cal.

So then forget any last minute recruiting for us, he's to busy helping Cal out, before maybe getting a good recruit here.

Slice does have an apartment in Riverdale but it's interesting that he's not out recruiting for UK (or SJU).

Must have gone there for a slice with a schmear.

Terence Mullin, Chris' brother, is the 3rd St. John's person out recruiting this weekend. Not officially on staff as of now.

Don't know if anyone suggested Stockton as an assistant coach. Had great things to say about his ex teammate on the Dream Team. I understand he was an assistant coach for his daughters Gonzaga Prep High School team. Could you just imagine Mullin and Stockton. What a draw they would be to St. Johns.

@KySportsRadio @johnnykats @carnegiedeli he's gone and St Johns will get Diallo

@KySportsRadio @johnnykats @carnegiedeli shouldn't he be recruiting?

@KySportsRadio @johnnykats @carnegiedeli once you have corned beef there, you never leave.

@KySportsRadio @johnnykats @carnegiedeli Slice gotta eat too people

@KySportsRadio he's gonna take the St Johns job. Can feel it in my boner. It's uncomfortable.

@KySportsRadio hopefully telling chris mullin no in person

@KySportsRadio with it being live period. Him in New York and not recruiting doesn't look well.

Get the F train at 2nd Avenue. Take the Queens-bound F to 169th street and Hillside Avenue. Transfer to the Q30 bus to Union Turnpike. Walk to the administration building. Ask for Chris.

Or maybe just jump in a cab. He can afford it.

Hopefully Slice is on campus tomorrow. We need to lock up Mussini. Don't let the kid get on a plane without his signature.

Nice to see Kentucky fans worried about losing Diallo to us. They are more confident about him heading to SJU then we are. Hope they are right. This is a big week. Would be amazing if coach Mullin could bring in Diallo and Mussini.
