Around the Big East

I'm not sure what the DePaul campus really looks like,
amidst a beautiful neighborhood (Lincoln Park) close to train (CTA). More leafy than I expected it to be for largely a commuter school. Not as overrun with parking lots like St. John's. Many grad schools are downtown in the loop. The Wintrust Arena is nice, but far, far from campus and probably too large (about 10K) for the interest the program generates.

DePaul, like St. John’s was founded as a Vincentian school.

St. John’s fans understand that the Vincentians are not the best education administrators.

DePaul should do what St. John’s did and go outside their order and hire an all star like The Honorable Father Brian Shanley.

Their current president is non-clergy. He's only been there for a year, though.

They have gone outside the Vincentian order.

Their president is a layman, Robert L. Manuel. He was previously the president of University of Indianapolis, and also worked at Georgetown and NYU in various administrative positions.

He is Episcopal, with an undergraduate degree from Allegheny College and masters from Syracuse.

It isn’t about the order. It comes down to the right person and the conviction to make a bold move (like Fr. Shanley did with Pitino).

It is great to invest money in a coach, as this school did prior with Lavin and Mullin, but that is only part of it. You need to go all in with the program’s infrastructure to see positive financial results.

SJU went the layman route and it was hardly a rousing success for the basketball program. After all Gempesaw gave us Mullin.

Maybe they’ll hire Norm, for starters.
