Around the Big East

With no smoke yet from credible insiders, it may be another week, another bunch of fake UConn "insiders" exposed. Reminds me of the cesspool that #sjubb (further) became in April when many falsely stated some big names were committing.

Also, I'm unimpressed with what the Big 12 has done so far besides baiting desperate UConn leadership for publicity. Since their two biggest brands announced their departure, they've added 3 AAC teams and 1 WCC team. None of the rumored Pac 12 teams, not even Colorado, have jumped to the Big 12 yet. The only way I see UConn joining anytime soon is if they're paired with Pac 12 team(s) to help offset their football... and even that is iffy.

Regardless of what happens with UConn, I'm 100% in favor of not adding just to add (i.e. anyone from the A10). Add Gonzaga if the numbers work, but that's it. Wait a few years as there may be some better options in the future.

Agreed about the watered down B12.

To me the watered down B12 resembles the updated American Athletic Conference with which Yukon previously was a member.

The thing that makes the Big East special is the rivalries among established schools. There are few emotional ties for Yukon fans with Texas Tech, Baylor, UCF, BYU, etc.

Hey UConn .... don't let the door hit you on the way out.

You can talk about how unimpressed they are with the Big 12’s plans for expansion because they are throwing schools against the wall to see who sticks (and to a degree that is true).

You can about all the intense basketball rivalries, which make the BE special (and yes that is true as well).

But the one thing the Big 12 will always have over the BE is money. They have more of it because of football and they are pushing hard to become the third mega conference.

I hope UConn leaves and then has to explain over and over to the tax payers of CT, why their football program is a money pit. All the while, watching their basketball program take a hit as well.

Yep, I've stated on here that I get it if UConn leaves. I'm not convinced it's the right move because I don't believe their football program will survive long-term. Even short-term they'd probably be better off waiting for the ACC to implode and aligning themselves with regional schools (and maybe even getting MSG to agree to a conference tournament there). But again, I get accepting a B12 invite from a money perspective.

What I don't understand though is their year-long public push for a P5 invite. It started around last August when their football coach was telling recruits they'd be in the ACC within 5 years. Then throughout the year their AD constantly retweeted those begging for a P5 invite. Then around February their president said in an interview if they received a P5 invite they may have to take it. Then all this nonsense after a national championship (which was thanks to improved recruiting after rejoining the Big East). All of this without an invite in hand and in the midst of ongoing contract negotiations with the Big East. Notice how difficult the Pac 12 is having signing a deal because schools like Washington and Oregon have been linked to the Big Ten? It's not only embarrassing for UConn and the conference, it's self sabotage. Nobody ever received a conference invite from tweeting.

I agree with you, but the level of competition the Big 12 will dole out on the field will pale in comparison to the B!G AND SEC, not even in the same stratosphere.

I agree with you. I was just pointing out that you should throw all logic out the window when it pertains to matters of conference money.

UConn is convinced this time will be different. They believe their basketball will not suffer because the Big 12 is the best basketball conference top to bottom.

And uconn remains bullish on its football program, which is probably ego driven. After all this time selling it, no one wants to admit they have a lemon on their hands (and not the kind you use to make lemonade).

The superior position the SEC and B10 holds over the B12 will be further extended when the ACC eventually spilts with Florida State and Clemson head to the SEC and UMiami and UNC head to the B10.

Don't sleep on FSU to the ACC. They have an invite and are very close to being an AAU school.

Ideally, Miami, FSU, and ND head to the B!G. UNC, UVA, GT would be extra gravy.

There are also rumblings about potentially adding Stanford and Cal down the line.

I think the B!G will replace the SEC as the king of CFB in due time.

I ultimately think it goes down like this:
Big 10: Florida State, Miami, NC State, Virginia Tech. Oregon, Washington are added at a later date. ND does a "scheduling agreement" with Big 10/moves other sports to Big 10. Dark horse additions: Arizona State (Phoenix market), Georgia Tech (AAU, Atlanta market)

SEC: UNC, UVA, Clemson. Dark horse additions: West Virginia (strong football program, public university, new market).

Big 10 wants to become a national brand while SEC is happy to be regional. Adding NC and VA markets/states & their academic caches make a lot of sense, and Clemson is a powerhouse program. After that, not really sure what other programs would add $$$ to the pot.

My understanding is that the B10 has previously rejected the deal that ND joins but remains football independent.

According to credible sources Colorado just completed a meeting about moving to the B12 and will have another tomorrow. Guess if UConn is leaving we'll find out soon enough.

What I'm eager to see is whether Nebraska thinks giving up a good chunk of money to regain their identity is worth it.

I'd be shocked but it does appear a few other Pac 12 schools may jump too which wouldn't be good for UConn.

I can see something similar playing out.

NC State and VT are interesting. Most on the Cane forums thought it'd play out like this:

B!G: UNC & UVA

SEC: NC State and VT

Although it'd seem like UNC and UVA are better cultural fits for the B!G, it really does seem like the SEC covets them. It also seems like the SEC prefers to keep it Southern, whereas B!G seems destined to go coast-to-coast. Therefore, those schools kind of make sense to be atop the wish list. Clemson doesn't woo the ACC academically (based on what I've read), so they seem like a good SEC fit - lol.

GT and VT are both awesome schools. I would love to see it happen, especially with the rivalry we (Miami) currently have...

Of the west coast schools, Cal and Stanford, based on what I've read, could get consideration after the ACC collapses. OU and Wash are interesting. You'd think they'd get an invite. I would love to see that play out, but who knows.

Yeah I don't think BC or CUSE would move the needle for the B!G to send an invite. Wake, Duke, etc. just don't seem like realistic options.

Interesting times... I'm just happy the Big East is a strong brand with an awesome product. I really hope the powers that be keep an open mind to adding a St. Mary's and / or VCU type of program, though SM would need a travel buddy.

@dk423

Read the bottom: Miami and FSU are gone from the ACC.

Interesting to see FSU leading the pack. I always thought Miami and Clemson would be the first.

Colorado leaving the PAC effectively ends that conference. I am sure someone else will jump to the Big 12 and that could keep UCONN out of things for now. Will be an interesting month at least ahead.

Florida State being that antsy to leave the ACC is amazing, especially if the Pac-12 indeed does implode by a Big 12 raid.

As a suuuuuuper casual USC fan, this is all very exciting to watch
