Around the Big East 19/20

Tough times & a dreadful football program;

According to media reports, the University of Connecticut is laying the groundwork to eliminate multiple sports next month. Like every university, it is facing a daunting balance sheet due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the athletic department specifically has been hemorrhaging money for years, running a deficit in excess of $40 million last year. Athletic director David Benedict sent up a warning flare last week about cutting sports: “I think that’s going to be a decision that we have to make,” he told the Hartford Courant.

True but I have no faith anymore in that. I assume almost everyone has a built in excuse to try to avoid that.

Well, maybe he has, or will shortly have, a bronchial condition that requires a warm, dry climate.

Not necessarily. if NCAA asks him to be specific he may state 1) desire to play PG 2) more playing time 3) don't like coach.

Wonder how this influences their interest in LJ.

Economics front & center appropriately

Per John Fanta
Kevin Willard says there were plans to have Seton Hall take a trip out West this upcoming season, but COVD-19 concerns have him focusing on bus trips for travel/budget circumstances. Hence, why the Penn State and Rhode Island road trips fit the bill for this season. #shbb

Also

Kevin Willard compared Canisius transfer Takal Molson's skillset to Providence's Alpha Diallo. Molson, at 6-foot-5, sat out last year but will be a key piece for Seton Hall. Averaged 17 and 5 in 2018-19. Willard called him a great fit for his system. #shbb

Music to my ears. Hopefully more teams will come up to play in Canada in August as opposed to the very expensive European trips, as St. John’s does every four years. Tyrese Samuels buddies can all get to see him play on the big stage if the Hall comes North but he is up here For the summer playing pickup ball most nights at the park closest to his home. A really nice kid. Told my son just the other night how he really liked SJU but the Hall recruited him much harder. They found the time to take a 55 minute flight, we did not :(.

If Tyrese wore women’s clothes we would have found the time to fly there

Report: PC Basketball May Hold Games at Alumni Hall, Mohegan Sun

With the Dunkin Donuts unlikely to open its doors until January at the earliest, the Providence College men’s basketball team and Providence Bruins are left homeless for the start of their upcoming seasons.

According to a report by Brendan McGair of the Pawtucket Times, PC athletic director Bob Driscoll is exploring moving games to Alumni Hall on campus, or to Mohegan Sun in Connecticut.

Collin Holloway, a 6’6” Class of 2020 Wing out of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, has committed to Patrick Ewing and the Georgetown Hoyas.

Not highly ranked, but shows there are still 2020 recruits out there to be had, even if not 6'11" bigs lol.

I'm completely blanking on names so I might be completely wrong, but I feel like Georgetown does a good job of dipping into Louisiana recruiting waters.

I think both Jamarco Pinkett and one of the guys that left recently were from Louisiana.

I was wrong on Pinkett (Washington DC area) but I am pretty sure one or both of the players who had to transfer out were from Louisiana

So they apparently do a good job bringing them in, but a terrible job of keeping them happy.
