Around the Big East 18/19

Nice to have a winning program & the options that come with it;

@WriterLeader247
Villanova clearly is after a small forward very hard. 5-stars Josh Green and Scottie Lewis, 4-star Malik Hall all have offers and have heavy interest from the program. Not to mention 4-star Seth Lundy still carries heavy interest and the news of 4-star SF Saddiq Bey possible.

Dead horse time, agree completely. Nova was tres smart enough to not listen to their “fans” but rather gave Wright the time he needed to build to that “classy success”; it did not happen overnight.

Exactly.
Jay Wright is a great coach and a GQ-personna.
But let us look at the video tape.
He was 19-13 his first year at Nova--which indicates he inherited a very good roster.
He was 33-33 his 2nd and 3rd years which means he was rebuilding.
And he did.
He then 'sailed' the next 7 years, recruiting and coaching well until he hiccuped in 2011-12 with a 13-19 record.
He has sailed to 2 national championships since.
A Hoops Demi-God.
Great.
Congrats to him.
My point is Mullin inherited less than zero his first year and it is tough recruiting from a ditch.
What surfaces for you may look impressive and stable, but it's difficult to focus lying face down in the mud.
Yes, I have issues with the Staff's structure
and the recruiting lethargy.
But we have a very talented roster with Ponds, and if Rice becomes our next A.C., it may well energize our recruiting.
If that happens, let's see what our record is over the next 7 years.
Let's see what 2018-19 brings.
Thanks.

The reward for a great Villanova season where "team" comes first. It also sends a clear message to all those players who transfer at the drop of the hat because they worry about their hierarchy in the lineup. Donte became a first round pick a d was not a starter on a great team, TEAM not ME !

Wow.
Villanova, Creighton and Xavier should be at the bottom of the conference this year.

Villanova at the bottom of the conference? I think not.

No way...Nova will still be top 5 at worst IMO. Coaching is too good. They have Gillespie to be the next big Nova guard. They really know how to identify talent and make it blend. Players at Nova are always progressing. They have a great system.

That being said, no reason we shouldn't be able to do as well or better than them next year.

Folks, please pump the breaks on Nova - I get that they are losing a lot but still have Paschall, Phil Booth, Cosby-Roundtree, Samuel back from injury, Gillespie, adding Joe Cremo one of the best grad transfers, adding Javon Quinerly and Cole Swider as freshman and probably not done. They are still going to be pre-season first place Big East.

And of course I failed to mention their best returning guy - Jay Wright

+1 WCJF - couldn't agree more.
In addition to the two top 35 freshman noted above, they also have Brandon Slater coming in rated # 50 in ESPN. So that's three top 50 frosh, an excellent grad transfer, two returning starters and two other rotation players from last year's NCAA champs plus Samuel back from injury. I would be stunned if Nova isn't in the top 3 or 4 in the BE when all is said and done and will likely be very close to pre-season favorites. And as you say, one of the NCAA's best coaches

Very true—they’ll still be formidable.
But, having said that, IF we do get Mustapha and he’s declared immediately eligible to play in 2018-19, the height of the basket has been lowered for us by at least a foot!

If Gillespie is their next big thing, they'll go 0-18.

Don't disagree but the Nova culture was built over a decade+, not overnight which is what many on here expected of Mullin. That culture is developed from the coaches to the player-leaders, to the rest of the team and that takes time. No one likes the transfers, but they are a recent college basketball phenomenon and just part of the game now. Of course Nova doesn't have that problem, Wright had worked hard and through his period of start-up adversity to have a well established program by the time the CBB landscape changed regarding transfers.

Agree Mean Gene, Caraher reminds me of a Mullin-type player. IF he’s half-the-gym rate Mullin was, we got a good thing going.
And Eli Wright was a high 4* outta HS—#80 247 rank I think(?)—who had a poor freshman year, but was a very good shooter in HS.
I think he’s a very talented kid who chafed under Howland’s wagon train offense.
I’m betting he prospers under Mullin.
And I also think Figueroa will open some eyes.
Our 5-gun guard/wing offense of Ponds, Heron (hopefully), Simon, Figueroa, Dixon will be magical to watch, supported by Clark—who can also shoot—and Keita, our lone rebounder.
Funny.
Let’s go Johnnies.

So do I, we have played that game beautifully. I just did not explain my point very well, I meant no one likes the way that transferring has become so prevelant in CBB. I was speaking in general terms and just didn’t make that clear.
