Wrong recruiting cycle.

But FWIW Depaul will welcome Jalen Coleman Lands, a 4 star transfer from Illinois who has 2 years of eligibility and committed in the same cycle as Dixon and Keita.

But if we're talking 2018 then In the cycle actually being discussed they also secured sit out transfer Darious Hall from Arkansas, but St Johns secured sitouts Eli Wright and David Caraher.

Just keeping everyone accurate in the DePaul vs St Johns recruiting wars.

Not to knock DePaul but this discussion in itself is a bit depressing.

Put it to you another way 3 years ago when Mullin was hired did you think we would be going into year 4 talking about whether SJU is recruiting better than DePaul or Villanova? I would have hoped to be comparing SJU to Villanova. The fact it's DePaul at this point should tell people who continually defend this staff's recruiting need to admit it is simply not at a level we expected nor should expect from SJU. That doesn't mean you fire Mullin but you should admit what I just wrote is true..

Three years ago after Mullin hired both Slice and Matt we thought we would be recruiting at a high level. What happened with Slice and the recruiting results that followed were a kick in the nuts.
But we are innocently discussing the two Vincentian schools because of our common roots and, as you pointed out, because we have been the cellar dwellers the past three years.
But Villanova is on a different level from DePaul and St. John's not only because they are two time national championship winners but because they have had a consistently talented roster while we have lost most of our recruits via early departure and transfers.
We have been in catch up mode but this year we should have most of the pieces to make a fair assessments and judge whether recruiting finally shows results with our major targets.

That's true. I've been making the BE recruiting threads on Holy Land (as Adoraz) for the past 5 years, so I know DePaul hasn't been recruiting well and SJU has consistently out recruited them.

However, Romeo is ranked higher than any SJU player since Jordan. I'd take a player like Romeo over the high volume of players SJU has been recruiting the past couple years. Ponds was close in his ranking, but aside from him we have not been able to crack the Top 50 players. Even Top 100 has been tough. Our recruiting has been trending downwards, while the basement pf the conference is somehow trending upwards.

All I'm saying is our recruiting has gotten worse, and that's a problem.

Congrats to DePaul though. Always good to see the conference's worst team win a huge recruiting battle.

I agree with you if we we are talking about talented front court players. We lost Sima, Owens, Yakwe, Ellison, and almost every top big recruit to date. That has been a problem.
However, Ponds, Simon, Figueroa, Williams and Dixon are very high level D1 players and as good in the positions 1 through 3 than any players signed since the Lavin era.
I've said in the past that Matt is a good recruiter for the Owens, Simon, Clark, Keita, Dixon and Figueroa's of the world but has not connected well on the prep circuit with bigs especially.
As many people are saying, that is why we need a second recruiter.

I was happy with Mullin's first/second classes. We've also picked up a few good players during the last few years as you've said.

However, overall I'm concerned because I think the trend is downwards and I'm not optimistic about 2019.

Ponds vs Govan they were the back to back NYS PoY in HS and both played in the PSAL and won state titles. As someone born and raised in Brooklyn it doesnt get much better than that. Thats why deep down we all want it to work and this season is important. This past season the first 2 games we played against them were entertaining, down to the wire, unfortunately we lost both. But we won the one that counted the most. Should be good, im going to try and go to both games next season.

Would love to make recruiting inroads upstate, especially if Syracuse may potentially be on the downswing. Not a ton of highly rated players up there, but when they do emerge they make an impact on the college level. I never expected Huerter to be as good as he is.

If we both can get relevant again it will be huge. Would be the best rivalry in the Big East; Pat Ewing vs Chris Mullin. Ponds vs Govan they were the back to back NYS PoY in HS and both played in the PSAL and won state titles. As someone born and raised in Brooklyn it doesnt get much better than that. Thats why deep down we all want it to work and this season is important. This past season the first 2 games we played against them were entertaining, down to the wire, unfortunately we lost both. But we won the one that counted the most. Should be good, im going to try and go to both games next season.[/quote]
