Around the Big East 18/19

Always take stats from scrimmages and exhibitions with a grain of salt, but this stands out:

Seton Hall freshman Tyrese Samuel had 10 rebounds in 16 minutes tonight.

Remember the name.

Not surprised I said kid may win BE rookie of the year. Very very long and athletic. We offered him but could not be bothered to take a 55 minute flight to talk to him in person.

Lord, do we remember the name. He was one of several redmen.comers' favorite recruits from last year, but ignored by staff. Just crazy!

You were saying he was real good and you had told staff about him

2020 four-star Orangeville Prep (Canada) forward Matthew Alexander-Moncrieffe has locked in his official visit to Seton Hall. He will be on campus November 8-11.

Moncrieffe was teammates with Tyrese Samuel in high school.

Sounds like SH enjoys those 55 minute flights RMN referenced.

Willard is solid. Not the best coach in the world, but he definitely does a very good job. It's time for everybody to get over the Isaiah Whitehead assistant coach hiring. Willard is so much more than that move.

Correct and they flew to Montreal 4 weeks ago to watch monctieffe play. If you recall I posted that weekend that he told me he would decide from Arizona , Michigan State , Georgetown and a host of other very high majors but yet the Hall is getting the visit right when the LOI must be signed. Impressive work on their part.

We recruited Canada more when there were one or two D-1 players a year at most up there and programs rarely ventured up there. If we didn't have one weird and/or lazy staff after another, we could have been one of the first names kids think of when they think U.S. basketball. I guess it's 20-20 hindsight to have asked for more foresight, since most outside Canada probably didn't expect ball up there to explode the way it did, but what could have been . . .

Your first statement is absolutely correct. A couple of times I picked up Ron Rutledge and Glenn Braica at the airport when they came up to see kids.
In fairness to the prior staff Slice was making trips to Toronto to go see kids at Athletes Institute and Orangeville Prep ( it is one and the same school ) but we all know how that ended and there has been no contact with that program since. As for AAU kids right now the best program in Canada is Brookwood Elite which started getting crazy pub with Luguenz and last summer Quincy Guerrier. I begged the prior staff to come to see Luguenz in 2017 and Quincy in August 2018 but we only had 1 recruiter. 20 High major schools came that weekend but not us. Adrien Autry of Cuse gave the kid the love he needed and last Christmas he went to Syracuse. Reports out of Syracuse summer trip to Italy was Quincy was the best player and at present some mock drafts have him a late first round pick.
There are still a ton of talented kids. My son’s teammate Ben Mathurin is ranked the number 1 kid in Canada for 2021 and he is completely wide open. Another teammate Jahmeel Telfort is also top 5. Ewing and Louis Orr were at many games this summer.
Will the new staff get involved North of the border time will tell. If they do you all will be the first to know.

Montreal’s Bennedict Mathurin is the #1 player in ?? for the 2021 class. He should lead our Canada U18
@CanBball
team this summer. Has a chance to be explosively scary at the next level. High major D1 player. Currently with the NBA Academy in Mexico. #RDS

May I guess that Staff is 'on' any necessary flights to 'wherever'? Lol.

Providence got its offense in gear just enough while maintaining the defensive intensity in a 60-53 closed-door scrimmage victory over Purdue. The Friars outscored the Boilermakers 37-25 in the second half after trailing 28-23 at the break.

Alpha Diallo led the Friars with 22 points on 7-of-14 shooting and 12 rebounds. The only other double-figure scorer for PC was Emmitt Holt (10 points).

Two PC players who had been battling injuries hit the court inside the Indiana Pacers’ practice facility. Maliek White (ankle) and Luwane Pipkins (hamstring) came off the bench to supply seven and five points,

The scrimmage between Villanova and UNC lasted over 50 minutes on Sunday. Villanova won the first two segments (44-36 in a 20-minute half and 8-7 in a six-minute segment with just non-starters), while the Tar Heels won the final two periods (43-36 in a 20-minute half and 18-12 in an eight-minute period that featured zone defenses by both teams). Over the full 54 minutes of play, UNC shot 50.6 percent from the floor and made 9 of 25 three-pointers, out-rebounded Villanova, 49-47, and held Nova to 39.1 percent from the floor and 39.2 percent (20 of 51) from three-point range. Both teams turned the ball over 17 times.

Cole Anthony scores 28 points for UNC.

Villanova's Justin Moore made 9 of 12 three-pointers and led all scorers with 39 points.

We have a super personable coach who really connects with kids -- just the type of guy a one-and-doner might want to spend his only college season with. I'd authorize as many 55-minute flights as possible if I were CMA's boss. We already know we'll save on cab fare after they land.;)

And meals and hotels. Joey T and DaShena have stayed in my home multiple times ( they never came together ). The only time Joey didn’t stay over was September 2018 when he was rehabbing from a torn ACL and could not walk all the stairs in my home.

Jay Wright tells me that he's still hopeful that Villanova freshman Bryan Antoine (shoulder) can return to practice in late November.
