Around College Basketball

Ian Jackson is averaging 14 ppg with good percentages.

But he averages only 0.7 assists per game.

That’s interesting. Having watched him in high school he has exceeded my expectations as a shooter and is just a phonemonal athlete. He can probably improve his assist numbers and be paired with a point guard who can shoot as well.

Only when they can’t shoot. Caddeau is shooting 23% from deep (up from 18.9% from last year) and RJ is shooting 28% on an absurd 7.7 shots per game. He’s literally shooting his team out of games this year.

Davis is taking on average only one more short per game this year than last year and almost exactly identical the same amount of three’s per game (7.7 compared to 7.8 last year). The difference is last year he FG percentage was 42.8% (39.8% from three) as compared to 37.8% (27.5% from three). Is suspect this is due to no inside presence and no consistent additional scoring help which is allowing teams to double him up in spots and put more defensive pressure on him.

Absence of Bacot may contribute to this. He was often doubled by opposing guards giving RJ cleaner looks on kick outs.

The pendulum is spinning one way. One upside, the hypocrisy of calling players “student athletes” will vanish.

This past summer, I made my largest donation ever to the school, in appreciation for all that Fr. Shanley has done since his arrival. If the school is going to pay some guys to play ball for St. John's athletic teams, I will somehow need to determine how my contributions are going to enhance the school itself, and not these ballplayers. I know what it was like to student loan your way through college and I'll be damned if my contribution doesn't help in that regard.

When you donate online you can select designated areas...especially scholarships.

If you absolutely don't want it to go to sports then don't select Red White or the University Most Needed Priorities as that could go to athletics.

And then pro rate it for all those who graduated with only 4 years?!

What would be the logic here. Let “students” spread out the school work?
