Let Rick handle it.The most important issue now is for the Big East to obtain a renewal of its national TV contract with Fox (or ESPN) to allow it to stay visible and relevant for the next decade.
UCONN board seems to actually also not want to do this, so its unclear what UCONN's level of interest is.Now I am totally confused. UConn is willing to join the Big 12 for basketball only? All this time we were told it was about elevating its football program.
While I still think ultimately it will play out that way, joining in with Gonzaga makes it an uneven number of football teams.
But whatever is the outcome, this certainly makes UConn look desperate.
The two additions would be for basketball only. With that in mind, how much of the pie would each school get and they would virtually be stacked against even in basketball matters by the full conference members. Now I am totally confused. how much is our contract and when does it end ?UCONN board seems to actually also not want to do this, so its unclear what UCONN's level of interest is.
The only way this would make sense to me for UCONN is if: 1) membership clause that they're in the Big 12 as a full-member once the current TV deal is up, 2) the shares of the Big 12 money is more than what the Big East contract will be.
I believe the Fox contract is 12 years 500 million and expires before the 25-26 season.how much is our contract and when does it end ?
Yeah, so that’s 4 mill per school per year (roughly). Big 12 is 30…I believe the Fox contract is 12 years 500 million and expires before the 25-26 season.
Scheer has been pretty on top of all this. A separate 247 article also said conference approved BY exploring going to 18Hmm we'll see if a better source reports this, but even if true I doubt UConn is stupid enough to accept. Even some type of football scheduling agreement shouldn't be enough. Their basketball value would likely plummet as they'd lose all of their regional rivals and MSG, and they'd also have massively increased travel expenses. No way it'd work without at least a partial share for football.

The only way I see it is if the $ they get now is over that range and they get full membership later. Then they’ve secured their seat at the table in the long-run, and get to still play in a preeminent conference.Gotcha, I didn't remember him having any big scoops but this past week realignment news has been a bit of a blur as to who is breaking news.
Interesting about them going to 18. I still have a hard time seeing UConn accepting if they're one of the members offered, but we'll see. That conference is literally ALL in middle/western America besides a plane ride to WVU and an even further flight to UCF. Assuming the next BE contract is in the $7-9 million range, then I'd think they'd have to offer a minimum of $15 million for them to even consider, and that'd still seem like a poor decision on UConn's side.
We need to secure Gonzaga this week.
The logistics aren’t hard all. Gonzaga is flying over 8 hours to Maui this season, 6.5 to Kentucky, two trips to Seattle which is over an hour flight. They are also playing USC in Vegas which is a two-hour flight. That’s just for the OOC that’s been announced.
Conference games like San Diego, Pepperdine, Pacific, and Loyola are all over a thousand miles away…basically the same as Creighton. They play UConn at MSG next year.
Each year an eastern team will give up a home game to play Gonzaga on a neutral court in Seattle or Portland.
Obviously the next move is to go to two divisions but let’s get Gonzaga now. They have the same mission, the same profile, the same existential risks as all of our schools outside of UConn.
Fly in over Christmas break and play 3 games in NYC area. Fly east during a 4 day weekend and play Gtown and Nova. It’s not that hard.
The issue now is, if you’re Gonzaga, wouldn’t you rather join the Big 12? Arizona, Kansas are better than our top 2, and the rest of the schools are closer. Plus, the Big East is stuck — why not join the ascending conference closer to you?The main issue for Gonzaga would be travel expenses for all of their other sports, but I 100% agree that if the financials work then they need to be in the Big East ASAP. Unfortunately they may want/take a Big 12 invite over us since many of those schools are closer to them. We'll see.
