Around College Basketball

The Big Ten would love UF. It would by far be its first choice school in Florida but I can’t see it leaving the SEC, so they would then have to choose between Florida State and Miami if the ACC implodes. Neither are AAU universities but both are close. They are both tied at #55 in the U.S. News Rankings. Miami is #75 in NSF R and D expenditures and FSU is 81. 13 of the 14 Big Ten schools were top 50 in NSF rankings for reference. Nebraska is the only outlier and both Florida State and Miami are far superior universities to Nebraska based on any metrics that I could find.

Notre Dame is not AAU mainly due to it not having a medical school but is tied for 18th in U.S. News rankings which would be the highest ranked Big Ten school even after the California expansion.
Northwestern is ranked higher than Notre Dame.

Nebraska was AAU but lost that credential while in the Big 10. You have to imagine down the line, the inverse of this conversation also begins — when do programs get dropped from these conferences?

I think the SEC will try for both Miami and Florida State to shut the Big 10 out of the state. We’ll see. I also think Georgia Tech is an underrated option for the Big 10 as well: big market, great recruiting ground, and coupled with other new programs (Miami, UNC, Virginia), will also be another major city with Big 10 alum.
I agree with you about Georgia Tech.

Can make a case for a few guys, but no body has dominated high major conferences like self has. It’s comical really. 26 years altogether in a D1 conference (23 B10/B12) and never finished worse than T3.
He's an amazing recruiter. One of the very top few of all time. But for the X's and O's aspect, of the guys listed in the top 10 I take Izzo, Sampson, Bennett, and Pitino over him for sure.

Pitino is the Billy Martin of college basketball coaches. Like all the great ones in every sport, he just seems to have a 6th sense for the game.

Agree to disagree. He’s doing this while not recruiting at the level of Duke, UNC, Kentucky etc. Last 10 recruiting rankings from 24/7 for Kansas.

4, 11, 23, 15, 5, 9, 16, 13, 9, 2
-average 10.7 finish.

His AP finishes in the last 10 years.
4, 3, 12, 1, 17, 4, 3, 1, 10, 10
- Averages 6.5 finish.

Self has finished a season outside the top 15 in the AP twice at Kansas, with the lowest being 17th. Just unreal domination at the high major level.

PS I know you’re not saying he’s a bad coach. This is a fun debate.
