April Live Recruiting Periods

Over next 2 live periods St John's OPS Dan Matic will be on road in place of head coach Chris Mullin. Recently underwent hip surgery #sjubb

I want to say "Good, because Matic is probably a better recruiter anyway," but I'm not sure kids will be impressed with Matic in the stands. But sadly, I'm not really sure they are all that impressed by Mullin unless their coach or parents tell them who he is.

He was at KY for one year, excuse me 11 months. Non event there. As you said he wasn't even their lead recruiter. His glory days are more than 10 years ago.

Which is the reason Mullin offered him an associate job, paid him more than he earned at Manhattan and then........
Only at St. John's could things go so wrong in under 12 months.

He was certainly still riding his rep earned long ago and Cal certainly helped him quite a bit in reinvigorating it. To be fair there are plenty of associate head/assistant coaches paid more than low mid major head coaches. Massiello is only making about $237K there. For example at UK where Slice temporarily played second fiddle to Payne, Payne makes over $700K. Close to twice the reported $400K salary of Slice.

Maybe some of those closer to the NY HS scene could talk about Slice's relationships with the local scent 200-2006 vs last year.

Slice's salary wasn't really an issue, his guaranteed contract was.

He couldn't postpone the surgery to a better time

Maybe he was in great pain and the best time was now. Hopefully we don't have a repeat of the Lavin medical hiatus where recruiting went south rapidly because no one else on the staff picked up the slack. What is Richmond doing while Mullin recuperates? If the hip surgery prevents him from going 1 on 1 with future recruits will opposing coaches start saying "he is half crippled, what can he teach you" :p
I'm not worried however because Matt has an ace up his sleeve.

Slice had good relationships with the older CHSAA coaches such as Alesi at Xaverian and the coach at All Hallows. Pitt was an Adidas school in the late 90's and early 2000's. I believe that Slice helped Xaverian get an Adidas contract. He left to coach at Manhattan and then got an assistants job with Cal.

When Slice came to St Johns, most of his Metro area contacts were gone. He was unable to connect with the new AAU coaches who are now the power brokers in recruiting. Anyone connected to the local basketball scene knew that Slice was not a good fit for St Johns.

Jesus Mullin might need to sit on the scorers table this season just for health reasons

As someone who was not connected at all but watched the way it went down everything you say was readily apparent. Let's not forget he had meaningless 1 year stints in the D League and b ack to Pitt before the 11 months at UK.

There's not enough pale ales in this world to soothe your upset mind set if that happens. :)

I'm not heartless. I can make a temporary medical exception as long as it's a lean and not a full sit on the table :) Oh and I'll take the pale ales too

Maybe we will do better with Mullin sitting out

Per Zach B
Among expected targets, St. John's will follow top 40 2018 wing Nassir Little this weekend. #sjubb

Agree with us guard that we seem to follow an awful lot of players but when I say we it always seems to be Matt. No matter what part of the country it's Matt. Doesn't any other coach have recruiting responsibilities?
