April Live Recruiting Periods

Well for one thing, Texas is not NY. Some players/people just don't want to stay home for college. Imagine that......

I happen to love Texas and lived outside of Austin for 2 years. It is all about wanting to play for certain coaches. As for Mo staying home please note he left home already to play prep ball. The hypothetical I proposed, was an example of staying on players over two years to change their minds but Bamba was never coming because he wants a guarantee to play the 4 and refuses to play the 5. Case closed.

So if he was never coming then why criticize, oh, wait, I forgot, that's all you do. And your hypothetical of staying on a player not interested in coming hoping "to change their minds" makes about as much sense as the rest of your posts. Case closed.

Everything discussed here is hypothetical when discussing future players since hardly anyone we recruit above 3 stars is a lock. To beat a dead horse, this type of player was the main reason we are still paying Slice a half million dollars.
As far as making sense, I am sorry to offend your sensibility.
We seem to have no problem, out of desperation, going after and staying on grand larcenists if they are tall enough. WTF makes going after elite undecideds who initially laughed at Matt a waste of time? We just wasted time on Nikola as far as tea readers are concerned. Then send Richmond on the next flight with Mullin.
As far as criticism it gets dispensed as needed. A third of the posts here by the literati such as yourself are critical of something. It is who we are as one of the most frustrated fans in all of college basketball because we usually don't live up to expectations or have low expectations. Two years ago I spent a lot of time following Slick. I made no bones about his importance to Mullin's future here. I expect the same aggressiveness with all our recruiting attempts, even those you may deem untouchable.

I've read so much about Slice's rep as a recruiter. I really am not aware of the players he has recruited over the years. Can someone expound on this, please?

FWIW Scout list's Bamba's final four as TX, Duke, KY and Michigan. ESPN the same. 247 drops Michigan.

So it looks like maybe he wants a big time sports school atmosphere with an experienced coach with recent NCAA tournament experience and success, as do many. STJ offers none of that. Just thinking out loud.

Do not think this was a big surprise to staff

Nor do I but 72 asked so I thought I'd offer my uninformed opinion.

Bamba was never coming because he wants a guarantee to play the 4 and refuses to play the 5. Case closed.

Bamba: I only want to play the 4.
Mullin: You got it.

That's how the exchange would have gone, so I'm pretty sure there are tons of other reasons why Bamba is not here.

Entertain us and list a few considering since he is still undecided.
p

His recruitment has been very quiet. I have no inside information but I get the feeling he is looking to play a year overseas and then enter the NBA a draft.
That sounds highly probable if his position at Kentucky doesn't materialize. Unless he is an academic risk there are no rules of salesmanship.

With Duke and Michigan involved I sincerely doubt he is an academic risk (when was the last time you heard either of these schools involved with an recruit who was a academic risk especially this late in the recruiting period).

Slice was the lead recruiter at Pitt and was a magnet for most of their recruits since the head coach lacked any level of personality. He was not the lead recruiter at Kentucky but was in constant contact with elite players. Certainly not the level of player we normally get invited for in-home visits.
Mullin agreed to a guaranteed contract that only blue bloods can afford at a blue blood salary.
It likely will go down as the biggest bonehead basketball decision in St. John's history second only to the hiring of Brian Mahoney who started the "decline" of redmen basketball as most of us knew it.
This associate head coaching debacle is all on Mullin who was not, and should not have been, in a position to force St. John's into such an agreement.
That it is not resolved to this day is an insult to the fans that pay for overpriced tickets for inferior performance.

Dear 72
So negative and disparaging and lacking any sense of compassion or patience.
When I
last reviewed the matter, no fan is forced to
pay for the "overpriced tickets" nor watch our "inferior players"...
No sarcastic doubt you can do much better...much much better, error free for sure - coaching, recruiting and playing!
Hmmm

Give the program, the coaches and especially the (mainly) teenage players a break.

Thanks '72. I'm not familiar with the Pitt teams Slice recruited for. Are there any names I might recall?

I'm sure you don't commute from your barracks on the east end of Luong Aisland General to come to all our games as some of us masochists do here in NYC so the thousands some us spend for tickets may be beyond your grasp or anyone else who is used to watching for free on TV or the interweb.
As for compassion and patience, you must be fckg kidding? If a quarter fckng century of patience is not enough your war wounds have not healed.

He recruited NYers really well to Pitt in the early part of this century. Krauser, Taft, Ramon, Benjamin, Levance Fields.

Really not a heckuva a lot since then. Was a total bust as a HC at Manhattan and changed jobs every year since leaving there.

I've read so much about Slice's rep as a recruiter. I really am not aware of the players he has recruited over the years. Can someone expound on this, please?

Hmmm

Give the program, the coaches and especially the (mainly) teenage players a break.
all the very best
B)

I'm sure you don't commute from your barracks on the east end of Luong Aisland General to come to all our games as some of us masochists do here in NYC so the thousands some us spend for tickets may be beyond your grasp or anyone else who is used to watching for free on TV or the interweb.
As for compassion and patience, you must be fckg kidding? If a quarter fckng century of patience is not enough your war wounds have not healed.

How about "Classless of 72" as a handle?

How about "Classless of 72" as a handle?

He was at KY for one year, excuse me 11 months. Non event there. As you said he wasn't even their lead recruiter. His glory days are more than 10 years ago.

Which is the reason Mullin offered him an associate job, paid him more than he earned at Manhattan and then........
Only at St. John's could things go so wrong in under 12 months.

A possibility as I don't believe in separating people by class. Maybe I'll never forgive Hillary for screwing Sanders either or Louie for passing the baton to a moron, or hiring a nice moron in Roberts or so many things but you may choose to call me names all you want. The time for patience ended 3 coaches ago.
