Apology

There's a famous quote from Mark Twain about his father: “When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years.”

Might be a lot of posters who will be using a version of that line when talking about Lavin this week...

3-0 in February...all against top 100 RPI teams. He' a visionary!
The team is really coming together and the remaining schedule is incredible, a real thing of beauty.
Props to the staff for keeping these kids focused after the horrible start...after 2 1/2 of losing with no upperclassmen. That is a tough culture to get away from.

Add me in as well. Was at the game tonight, awesome win, Just when I thought the wheels were about to unravel we stayed composed. 2 non-bball observations: 1) small crowd but I actually felt it was one of the more vocal crowds in the past few years, 2) Creighton fans/players/coaches are an unbearable group

Please elaborate on the fans of Creighton being unbearable. Do you mean by reading their board (cause they annoy me on there), Or were there some annoying people at the game?

I am talking about at the game. Complain about every call, even when the calls were mostly going there way. I don't think they thought one foul against them actually occurred. They remind me a lot of UCONN fans, very arrogant, very obnoxious. From the starting tip they went crazy on every basket. Maybe I was overreacting and annoyed by the reffing at home but I found them to be a rough group to be around.

Thank you for sharing, and I sensed that when we played in Omaha, their crowd reacted as if they had never fouled anyone ever.

Their attitudes on their board has also been very arrogant. They act like they own the big east, even though it's their first year. I get it they are in first, (actually not anymore, thanks to us) but they act like no one can compare to them and they are above all the other teams.

They are also delusional, if they think they are going to be at the top of the big east next year. They don't realize how much of the load McDermott carries offensively.

Agreed you covered exactly what they act like. I got the sense they thought of Creighton as a superior program and we were just some random team that didn't belong playing them. Guess they aren't exactly history buffs.

The point about the future is so true. I have watched them a lot this year, and I really believe their productive players, like Wragge and Gibbs are a product of McDermott. Usually they get open shots and open layups because of him, but we are one of the few teams that has individuals that can guard McDermott (relatively) and not need to double/hedge on screens as much. McDermott is an excellent player with a high IQ, and he moves off the ball so well. Both when he has the ball and when hes off the ball everything runs through setting screens for him or him setting screens looking for the switch. There offense really does not look great when not running through him and he makes everyone on that team much better.

Too put it more bluntly they would s..k without him.

That's what has me most impressed. It really looked like some guys were about to quit on the team, but they didn't. Coach kept them in the mix and motivated.
I'm always tough on coach Lavin, but those kind of people skills can be invaluable.

At the same time, I don't feel the need to apologize. The criticisms from January were deserved. But I'm glad to see they stuck with it and are turning things around.

No, don't apologize, just admit you were the delusional one.

Well said. I also don't feel the need to apologize for criticizing the inexplicable decision-making that went into the 0-5 start (esp the Providence loss).
But I do think it's necessary to recognize and applaud the impressive turnaround put in by Lavin and staff.

And nobody should apologize for criticizing him. Good win, but that stretch in January could in the end keep us out of the tournament.

I'll cut them a little slack. They are having one of the best year's in the program's history, with the runaway POY favorite, and they are in a new, exciting big-time conference for the first time ever. Creighton will be fine next year. The area has some very good JUCOs they can grab without much competition, and they return Chatman and Brooks. Brooks will be an all-conference caliber player next year IMO. Creighton is a very solid program. They've made the NCAA tournament nine times since 1999 (advancing four times) and they are top five in attendance every year.

They are a pretty rough team. Gibbs is fierce...the dude is a tough "kid." He pushes off hard all game and he's very physical. Creighton also sets a ton of hard moving picks. In the final minute their big destroyed one of our guys and he was clearly not even close to standing still.

Any coach is subject to critiquing. However, some posters here, especially in the FIRE LAVIN thread, went way overboard. I don't expect anyone to apologize who said the most outrageous things, because the most outrageous things were not rational to begin with.

I actually think they had 4 or 5 seniors in the starting lineup so I dont know what they will have next year

I don't know what you're referring to, but most of the criticism I saw was entirely rationale. And now isn't the time to rehash this, after an awesome win. The vast majority of posters want to see Lavin win every game for as long as he is our coach, myself included.

I don't agree with this. The guy hasn't even had his first recruiting class hit its senior year...there are no fourth year seniors on the roster...a freshman PG leading the way, two starting raw sophs, and two other first year players that have played decent minutes. That is a lot of change to mix in with guys that have played outside of their abilities for 30+ mpg for two years. He kept asking for patience until February. If he delivers, those who raked him across the coals should apologize.

Let use not forget Frank McGuire " you coach- I recruit and I will beat you every time " all he needed was Buck Freeman.
Coach Frank proved it at SJU, North Carolina and South Carolina. The name of the game is to recruit.
The all american coach at Duke with all the x's and o's lost to Syracuse
