All Realignment Talk Here

Hopefully the football schools just sell the Catholic 7 the B.E. name in the off season and just get it donew, or if not then just dissolve it, or don`t care what happens. I just don`t want nothing to do with them.

I`m just hoping it`s a totally different conf that we`re in next year. I can`t get excited being in a conf of nobody`s. Tulane, UCF, SMU, are you freaking serious?

Geno Says Good Riddance To Schools Fleeing Big East

"Everyone wants to live in the place where the nine original schools of the Big East are all together and will play against each other forever. Then football became the driving vehicle. You are either at the table with the big boys or you are not.

"The Catholic schools did a really good thing. They stayed at the table for as long as it took them to make as much money as they could. And once they saw all the money running out, they decided to go play somewhere else. Had some of them managed to vote appropriately over the last 10 years [as Big East conference members with a say on rights' fees], we wouldn't be in the situation we are now.

"They did what was best for them, just like a lot of Catholic schools do

Haha what a coward. As if he's the moral barometer in all this. Everyone and their mother knows UConn would leave ASAP for greed in the ACC regardless of if we stayed or not. SJ will probably end up making less in the new C7 league. We stayed together for basketball, for tradition, for rivalry, and to keep basketball competitive. We are not the school with a FBS program that has money in our eyes. Oh, Geno and your sour grapes.

"They did what was best for them, just like a lot of Catholic schools do" Is he f'in kidding me? What is that supposed to mean? I assume Pukon would have stayed loyal to the 7 throughout all this . What a self-serving arrogant statement

Sadly I think we are starting to see people's religious views creep into this move.

Yup. It was/is perfectly fine for state universities to hoard tax dollars and TV money at the expense of the Catholic schools. But when the Catholic schools finally do something proactive in order to survive as relevant basketball programs, they get bashed. Sorry, but it certainly appears as if anti-Catholic bias is encouraged to be out in the open.

Of course Notre Dame gets a pass. They are the apple of TV's eye afterall. ND is part of the almighty football club. They are good Catholics.

If Lavin could ever bring SJU a national title, I will join twitter (for one day, and then burn my password forever) and send f*ck you tweets to Tim Brando, and all of the adimistrators from the football schools.

I agree with your statement; however one thing he said rings true. If we had voted differently years ago things may have turned out differently for the BE. But in all cases past and present, institutions, religious or state, will vote to protect what they see as their own best interest.

Same holds true for Pitt though who squashed the BE TV deal and then picked up and left within the year.

Ha! I loathe twitter. But if SJU ever wins a national title, I would even think of entering satan's lair (twitter) and become a loudmouth and a bore of a winner. Atleast then, the unnecessary Catholic bashing could use me as an example of "Catholics being Catholics."

If UConn. were one of the non-football schools it would very likely be 8 schools joining together to form a new conference. Then the religious aspect of state U or private school thing would not hold up. This is a case of 7 schools whose needs are being ignored leaving. I'm Jewish and feel very uncomfortable that religion comes into this picture. Lets applaud Mick C. and other members of the BE who see this clearly and feel the 7 are right. The teams leaving are the non-football members, and it should have stayed at that. If this turns out to be a all-Catholic league that would be fine, but don't know if it should be promoted as such. I know the guys on this board just want to see SJU in a strong league, playing a good schedule, and some top notch hoops. I now feel like we are on our way.

Very well said 49! That is one of the reasons getting an Indiana program like Butler is very important. I also would not close the door on a Memphis and Temple for all sports but football to strengthen the power ranking. Having 3 non Cathloic schools will look very much like the early Big East with Syracuse and Uconn.

The Big East has “reached out” to both Fresno State and UNLV to join the league on the football side, CBSSports.com has learned. In addition, BYU and Big East commissioner Mike Aresco have at least had informal conversations.

UNLV and Fresno have “definitely” talked to Aresco, according to a source. However, the talks are being kept as secret as possible to keep from “offending people” such as regents and boards of regents and trustees at those schools.

Aresco is aggressively trying to assemble a group of football-playing schools to keep under the Big East banner. The problem: Uncertainty on all fronts. The Big East doesn't know how -- or even if -- it will proceed in football. The 10-team Mountain West hasn't made a move to expand because of its uncertainty in its TV contract with CBS. The 10-year contract runs through the 2015 season, paying what is believed to be $8 million-$12 million per year. However, one source said conference schools are hoping to gain control of some second and third rights (or games).

Those rights could be owned by the schools (re: pay-per-view) or bundled by the conference to a rightsholder. Either way, the idea is to televise as many games as possible.

“It's the only reason the Mountain West hasn't moved because of the TV thing,” a source said. “The TV thing is really puzzling.”

There is no certainty on the membership clause that is included in all such contracts. Of the nine-team Mountain West that existed in 2005, only five of those schools would remain in the 10-team league for the 2013 season. BYU just completed its second year of independence after leaving the Mountain West. Current members San Diego State and Boise State are due to join the Big East on July 1.

“That's the bone of contention, membership change,” the same source said.

That membership change is the heart of the issue moving forward. Below the five power conferences, there is uncertainty over which entity would be that No. 6 conference with the upper hand in chasing the playoff bowl berth in most years. The highest-ranked champion among the Group of Five (MAC, Big East, Conference USA, Mountain West, Big East) will get that berth each year beginning in 2014.

The Mountain West almost stayed out of the BCS because of access concerns. Two sources told CBSSports.com the MWC went up until the last minute before signing the current BCS four-year contract with ESPN. The TV package was vetted both with and without the MWC. There was no change in value. Mountain West presidents eventually decided to sign on. The current BCS deal began in 2010 and ends in 2013 before the playoff era begins.

Mountain West presidents met Dec. 10-11 without resolution on its next move. There is widespread speculation that Boise State, San Diego State and BYU could join the league. ESPN.com reported previously that all three schools had discussions with the Mountain West.

Ajersey.com reported this week that a “western group” of Big East football programs could include Houston, SMU, Boise State, San Diego State and either Air Force, BYU, Nevada, UNLV or Fresno State.

The Big East has 12 teams due to play football in 2013.

Agree completely. The last thing we'd want to do is have an official (or even unofficial, as in Adam Zagoria's creepy Big Priest reference) identity as a Catholic -- or any other specific denomination -- conference. No good can come of it, and the downside is potentially enormous. Hey, you're turned off by it and you're a fan! That's why it's important to get Butler and another non-Catholic school to join us. Memphis would be ideal, provided they could be aligned with another conference for football and/or other sports. Same goes with Temple, but that's unlikely in either case.

Agreed. The Catholic thing is out of control...it's about basketball, not religion. I don't want to scare away any secular schools who have good programs. We need to drop the "Catholic 7" label and go for something more like "Hoops 7".
