All Realignment Talk Here

If UCLA doesn't make the tourney, Howland is gone. It will be five straight years without a Sweet 16 appearance and three times in the last four years without making it to the dance. And this comes out of a conference that should make that almost automatic.

Add to that scenario that Anderson and Muhammad will be gone regardless, it will be hard to hold the job at a college BB Mecca like UCLA. I think the names Mark Few, Jamie Dixon and ........John Calipari will be discussed.

Why would any coach leave UK for UCLA? UK is #1 in the country in attendance, over 23,000 fans a game, and UCLA averages 700 less than we do!

So you think Cal stays at UK because of its attendance numbers?? LMAO! Cal is a millionaire and salary would not even be the issue. Cal loves challenges. He would love Hollywood! He would also transform UCLA into the best program west of Lexington in one season. He would get the same top 10 recruits.....and it is all about getting the recruits. UK would likely pay a King's ransom to keep him since all the marquee 1 and dones would be at UCLA from there onward. UK NEEDS a superstar coach but name one after Cal that could keep them Bluegrass fans happy.

Forgetting things like travel, here is how I would rank the teams that have the most appeal for making this basketball conference:

1.) Butler
2.) Gonzaga
3.) Xavier
4.) VCU
5.) St. Louis
6.) Dayton
7.) Creighton

Insofar as Butler, my gut is that Stevens will eventually move on to a super elite program and big bucks. He will be UCLA's top target, and if not UCLA it will be a job too good to pass up. At that point Butler will once again be an unheralded mid major. There are safer choices than Butler, even if at present they don't look quite as appealing.

Good list. I would sub Valparaiso for Creighton and Zaga as they would be more regional than either one and would create some great mid-west rivalries with Marquette, Xavier and Butler.

Uk is a better job than UCLA in every way. Pitino always said that the biggest mistake he ever made was leaving Camelot aka Lexington. I don't think Cal leaves UK for any college job.

You are probably right. I throw it out there as a distinct possibility because it all depends on (a) what happens with Howland, and, (b) how UK does this year with its uber-hyped freshman class.

Valpo?
Come on.
Besides I wouldn't even invite Creighton. Keep it 10 teams and have elite non conference schedule.

One program not being mentioned that I believe should at least warrant consideration is Davidson. Has a strong basketball history and pedigree. And might also work as a symbolic move into the Carolinas.

I don't think Davidson would be part of any conference with fewer than 16 teams, since there are other names the seven breakaways have their eyes on. But I'd have no issue with Davidson as one of 16 teams. I just don't think the conference goes above 12.

Kentucky averages almost 24,000 fans a game. That is more than every single college and NBA team. UCLA plays in a seemingly half empty arena. The difference between coaching in those environments is pretty stark. UK could match any offer UCLA would ever be able to come up with. UK is a huge part of the lives of most of the state while UCLA has a small ownership of an NBA town.

If Holand leaves UCLA, the job will go to Brad Stevens.

He will be the first guy they target and he will accept

All true, however in order to coach in Kentucky you have to live in Kentucky. Even Marillac left Kentucky for greener pastures. ;)

I like them better than Dayton. I know Dayton draws a big crowd, but they seem to lack pizzazz.

Edit: Creighton, I mean. Don't want anything to do with Valpo.

Plus, no other school in America is willing to pay a basketball coach $4 million dollars a year. Including UCLA, in my opinion. That's double what they pay Howland now.
According to Forbes Self, Izzo, and Donovan are the only other coaches above $3mil, and they're all half a mil or more away from Cal.
He's not going anywhere.

Let's be fair about it. They have to give Calipari a lot of money, to account for the portion of his salary that gets "redistributed."

You think UCLA would take their second straight Pittsburgh coach? I don't think Dixon has west coast ties.
Otherwise I would not mind. Pitt deserves EVERYTHING they will get.

Below is a LINK to a press conference held by representatives of Villanova University on December 16, 2012 to discuss their decision to move from the Big East. Appearing at the press conference was Athletic Director Vince Nicastro, Villanova president Peter Donohue, and head men's basketball coach Jay Wright.

I hope Brad Stevens doesn't take UCLA job. It's career suicide and a no-win situation there. Nobody is ever good enough. Stevens can build something special somewhere else. At UCLA, you're never anything but second best...at best.

Like Steve Lavin, coach Dixon is a west coast guy. He did not come east of the Mississippi until 1999. He was born a stone's throw away from UCLA in Burbank! He coached on the west coast. How west coast does he need to get? LOL!!
