Adios Eli

4 star players that need 3 different colleges to get it together just proves that they can't or refuse to put in the work to compete with teammates. Maybe he ends up with the coach that recruited him to St. John's.
I completely disagree with this statement. Who are you to say that he needs to get it together, or that he refused to put in the work? There is zero need to essentially bash a kid's character just because he is transferring. And for a lot of the players, it's about more than just basketball. So he went to Miss. State, and for whatever his reasons were, he transferred and ended up here. When he committed here, he not only committed to the school, but also to the coaching staff as well. Well he determined that with the new coaching staff, this school is no longer a fit for him. So be it. Can we really fault him for that?

But your assertation that he is transferring because he can't get it together or refuses to put in the necessary work to compete is just plain ignorant.
No need to call names. Take the time to digest the post before responding. That is my opinion for all 4 star players that need to attend 3 or 4 schools to play basketball. This new generation of players often have a me first attitude and if playing for demanding coaches or competing for minutes against 2 and 3 star players is a threat then there is no next level for that type of player. Ron Artest and Walter Berry hated to practice but they had God given talent that you can't coach. We agree to disagree.
So you have a blanket opinion for every 4 star player that transfers multiple times? And where did it say anywhere that he 'needs' to attend 3 or 4 schools......he is choosing to transfer....there is a difference. Once again, you are making a generalization about a situation where most of the information presented is all hearsay. Sorry, but that makes you ignorant.
Just to be clear he did not choose to transfer. He elected the lesser of two evils. Staff did not say anything publicly that would hurt him. CMA may be a disciplinarian but is also a real gentlemen. Wright’s loss as he had an opportunity to garner serious minutes this season for what appears to be an excellent coaching staff. Now he just lost a year of collegiate eligibility.

I’m also a little tired of the self righteous politically correct crowd running to the defense of these kids who make a “commitment” that they don’t come close to delivering on. Enough of the bs. Transferring endlessly is not a strategy for success. And thanks for taking up a scholarship for the last year plus that we could have used on a player who wanted to play here.

And please stop acting like you know these kids are transferring for good reasons, This guy didn’t even play a game for us. How is that defensible? Ignorance cuts both ways guys. Break a sweat and try a little hard work...it won’t kill you and maybe it will help you grow a bit.

As opposed to your self righteousness???

Ok so you start a job with one boss who hires you bc your skills fit the job description. Then that boss leaves and a new boss comes in. You did not sign up for that boss and your skill set no longer fits the job description. Despite trying to make it work, it doesn’t. Would anyone criticize you for finding a new job?

Sure Eli didn’t play here in a game, but he went to class and practiced for a year. It’s not like he didn’t work or put in effort. He didn’t leave immediately after Mullin left like others in an attempt to make it work. No idea what actually happened but he has every right to transfer. This isn’t indentured servitude.

Thanks for an objective opinion Matty Hoops. I doubt if anyone who has posted has had a conversation with Coach Anderson or Eli as to why it did not work out. To my knowledge, Eli passed his classes and was not involved in any scandals that hurt St. Johns. As for myself, I hope that Eli is successful, not only in basketball, but in life.

Just curious how folks are comparing the Wright situation to Dunn's. Both transferring for a second time after sitting a year due to a coaching change. Many seem to be critical of Wright who i presume are very excited and complimentary of Dunn. Is there a difference other than one is leaving us and the other is joining us?

Bingo. It's complete rubbish that folks on here only now, want to allege that he had trouble with classes, after he decides to leave. Classless low blows from keyboard warriors.

Also lost in translation, Eli averaged 13.5 minutes a game at Miss St., with 3.2 pts per game 1.9 reb, .6 ast, .3 stl, and .2 blocks. That means he's a non-impact player. It wasn't working out for a new coach. Oh well. Better he makes the grown decision to leave now than to stay and be disgruntled on the team throughout the season.

Best of luck to Eli, hope he finds a place that suits him. I personally don't begrudge student athletes that transfer after a coaching change, especially when it appears to be mutual. I also expect fans to leave reason at the door when it comes to how they react when they learn of a student athlete moving on, its more of a "I dump you, you don't dump me". I also don't care about an athlete's "stars" or player rankings once they're out of HS, especially two or three years removed, its what you kind of player and teammate you are now. No amount of talent will matter if you're not buying into a program and willing to work hard in it. Hope Eli has a fantastic college experience going forward.

Nobody is complimenting Dunn for transferring. Dunn at least contributed significantly at his last stop btw. SJU fans want to see the school win basketball games. Dunn might be able to help that. Eli Wright did zippo and took up valuable scholarship space. In addition, Dunn is transferring to a different level, to have upward mobility. In addition, even for the people here with earmuffs on and don’t believe it, Eli wasn’t working out and left under a very different circumstance. Very different scenarios.

How did Dunn contribute significantly at his last stop?

To be clear, i'm not trying to be critical of Dunn, just seems like tendency is always to be celebratory for incoming transfers and then bash outgoing folks even when reasons are often similar.

Exactly. It is frustrating. It is 10 years of roster building mistakes that have long term impacts and EW not responsible for that regardless of whether it was his bad choices or not. (Nor is CMA right now) Looking at this roster here was a physically mature player with more height at the guard/wing spot that I thought was going to play an important part. Dunn checks off the physically mature part but we effectively get even smaller in this trade... Having to wait even longer to hear that Rutherford is academically clear makes it even more frustrating and... we need another big.

Windy City Johnny Fan wrote: How did Dunn contribute significantly at his last stop?

I believe MCNPA was referring to last year he played for St. Francis where he led the team in scoring (15 ppg), rebounds (6 rpg) and steals.

The complimentary reax to Dunn may also have something to do that he's NYC kid coming (back) home.

I agree about a Big. I truly have no idea what Wright was going to contribute but he left Miss State as an unhappy camper due to playing time and it appears he may not be a good fit for what CMA wants to do. 6'4 is a bastard height for any wing not named David Thompson.
However, I saw Rasheem play in high school and think he will be a better option and trust me he has an uncanny nose for the ball in offensive rebounding just as Shamorie had.
Both will be at a third school but that is where the comparison ends. Eli was a highly recruited 4 star player that went to major program where he was a bench player for two seasons. Rasheem got offers only from mid majors and played very well at SF. He is trying to upgrade both schools and his game by coming home to St. John's. He and Williams will play well together. I think the two new 6'8 kids may offer more at the wing than Wright could. If Both Figgy and Heron play up to their potential we will not miss Eli as much. Especially if we get a surprise late addition.

There will almost always be some collateral damage with a coaching change. Wright was never an MA guy. I think we can all agree the most important 2 players stayed.

Definitely. But these guys need the right pieces around them to make a good team on the floor. That is why I keep harping on the need for big(s). Heron and Fig guarding 4s and 5s on defense should not be part of the game plan. And that roster building is the primary reason I liked the Rutherford pickup. He's a distributor with good size for a point guard. The other piece is more size at 4 and 5.

Everyone can agree we could certainly use another big - but very tough given timing for '19 as there is a much smaller pool of available options, as many here have noted previously. Like who are we even talking about at this point? I know staff's job to find somebody but seriously slim pickings i think - I don't remember any quality JUCO or grad transfer big signing in months who i was like "why didn't we get that guy?" All of that said even the most lukewarm of bodies that happened to be at least 6'9'' would sure make me feel better right now.
