I don't think the red uniforms argument loses any validity. I don't think the school thought that plastering a football player clad in red on the back of the basketball warm-ups was a good idea and I doubt the school thought that having a football player clad in a red uniform was going to catch on when he/she was leading cheers at half court. So instead, St. John's probably thought it was a good idea to use Blackjack and a facsimile of a Native American on the uniforms was a good idea especially at that time when this was not controversial. My final point. Wasn't Joe Lapchick's nickname the "Big Chief"?The argument about the red uniforms, true or not, loses validity and all weight, when you have used Mascots wearing Indian costumes dating back to the 40’s, when you use to drag out a wooden Indian named Blackjack that was obtained from a smoke shop, used logos depicting an Indian (the Crazy Indian) dribbling a basketball, holding a baseball glove with a baseball on it and an Indian head on the back of your basketball warmups. Based on all of that, the past actions leads to the association of the name Redmen and American Indians even with the failed attempt to change it to a guy wearing a red tuxedo.
To go back to that name or copyright it would go against every reason the University changed the nickname and I don’t see that happening.
Footnote. What nickname do you give the Women’s teams which out number the Men’s teams?
Not to mention a certain fast food chain. Imagine Joey T’s squad rocking these adidas.Complete missed credit card endorsement marketing opportunity
It most certainly does lose validity when your whole image in terms of mascots and eventually logos for 50 years was associated with an Indian. Not the fact that your football team use to wear all red uniforms before Television was invented. The thinking behind it is irrelevant as it happened and that is what you became.I don't think the red uniforms argument loses any validity. Adidas clearly re-focusing on college
Can't speak for everyone, but at Dutch Broadway elementary we also said that backwards it meant Sex After Dinner Is Definitely American.Anyone else remember when Adidas meant:
All Day I Dream About Sex
?
Bring back ThunderProbably because Lady Redmen or Redwomen wasn’t going to fly. If I recall, they had a subway train for a logo. I thought that would have worked instead of Red Storm, you have the 1 Train as the logo (big red circle with a 1 in it). Of course, the mascot would still have been problematic. A subway car costume?
Having gone to Dutch Broadway Elementary, was Gouz (about a mile away) still operating. Can't speak for everyone, but at Dutch Broadway elementary we also said that backwards it meant Sex After Dinner Is Definitely American.
And the more classless among us also said it stood for After Dinner I Did A Sh*T
