The argument about the red uniforms, true or not, loses validity and all weight, when you have used Mascots wearing Indian costumes dating back to the 40’s, when you use to drag out a wooden Indian named Blackjack that was obtained from a smoke shop, used logos depicting an Indian (the Crazy Indian) dribbling a basketball, holding a baseball glove with a baseball on it and an Indian head on the back of your basketball warmups. Based on all of that, the past actions leads to the association of the name Redmen and American Indians even with the failed attempt to change it to a guy wearing a red tuxedo.
To go back to that name or copyright it would go against every reason the University changed the nickname and I don’t see that happening.
Footnote. What nickname do you give the Women’s teams which out number the Men’s teams?
