Adidas v Nike v UnderArmour Etc

The fact that this logo, designed to appeal to children, is still stitched onto apparel and occasionally displayed at half court is horrible. It’s widely unseen bc no one buys it. A revamp has to happen as soon as possible bc the merchandise with this logo or the ultra bland boxed lettering is hundreds of thousands of dollars lost annually during this rebirth. I will die on this hill. Eviscerate Johnny Thunderbird, for the love of God, please -

At the very least, with zero imagination just resort to the intimidating horse that will always pop on clothing and connect us closer to the days of winning -

To me the horse looks like he is trying to fart. :)

I’m probably in the minority but I actually like the bird one they use mid court for “Johnny day” (were also 2-0 on it)

Probably because I grew up on it but always liked the Red Storm city logo. Would love a cleaned up modern version of that. The SJ logo is just so bland. Probably the worst logo in conference.

I do not know if SJU is the sole basketball only school under Addidas, but they are the only Big East school and by extension the biggest.

Being the linchpin NYC program for Addidas is a coup for the university. We should all expect very nice designs and bigger marketing opportunities next season.

Unfortunately Saint John’s University in Minnesota trademarked the name “Johnnies” leaving StJ’s with the awkward “Red Storm” name.

Good about St. John’s Minnesota. While I don’t mind RAF and others referring to us as the Johnnies, I cannot stress enough how I do not want that to be an official nickname. St. John’s Johnnies like the St. Bonaventure Bonnie’s, no thank you!

Please bear with me on this since I don't live on Long Island but if the two high schools currently in the news that are fighting their school boards to retain their Native American nicknames and if they prevail, is there any chance that St. John's can make a similar to case to go back to the Redmen nickname?
St. John’s did this by on their own three decades ago and don’t come under the edict to remove Native American Nicknames and Logo by the NYS Department of Education which came down four or five years ago.

I don’t see St. John’s reversing themselves.

I never understood why they did it because there was no pressure to really change it. Johnny Thunderbird the kids love. The problem now at all 3 companies they don’t employ innovators I don’t see them doing anything better than what Nike did. I hope I am wrong, I thought UA was going to do better they dropped the ball.

I may be mistaken but I thought St John's did this three decades ago because of pressure from Native American organizations. St. John's counter argument was the Redmen nickname had nothing to do with Native Americans but it was a nickname chosen because the St. John's football team wore all red uniforms many years ago. The pressure to change has at least seemed to subside wrt the two LI high schools mentioned above.

At a minimum, St. John's should at least trademark the name Redmen to at least protect its right to go back to it in the future if so desired.

And that argument has no bearing because the logo was literally a native American. Time to move on, as a I doubt very many people below retirement age are pining for this nickname to return.

The argument about the red uniforms, true or not, loses validity and all weight, when you have used Mascots wearing Indian costumes dating back to the 40’s, when you use to drag out a wooden Indian named Blackjack that was obtained from a smoke shop, used logos depicting an Indian (the Crazy Indian) dribbling a basketball, holding a baseball glove with a baseball on it and an Indian head on the back of your basketball warmups. Based on all of that, the past actions leads to the association of the name Redmen and American Indians even with the failed attempt to change it to a guy wearing a red tuxedo.

To go back to that name or copyright it would go against every reason the University changed the nickname and I don’t see that happening.

Footnote. What nickname do you give the Women’s teams which out number the Men’s teams?

See Major League Baseball, history of the Tampa Bay Rays who played their first ten MLB seasons as the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

Yeah, about going back, that ship has long sailed by. I believe a nun on the Board at that time was a driving force behind the name change.

Way back when, the women's BB team used to be called the Express for some reason.

Supposedly, the name Express came about as a derivative of the name of their original coach when the program started, Vickie Kresse (was married to St. John’s Assistant Coach and later College of Charleston Head Coach John Kresse) and the uptempo style they played.

Probably because Lady Redmen or Redwomen wasn’t going to fly. If I recall, they had a subway train for a logo. I thought that would have worked instead of Red Storm, you have the 1 Train as the logo (big red circle with a 1 in it). Of course, the mascot would still have been problematic. A subway car costume?
