After just watching the 'Cuse/SDSU game on tape, Polee did not start and looked bad in the few minutes he played. Sheppard didn't look very good either and has no jump shot. The whole Aztec team was bad..,they can't shoot, they play soft D and are awful at the free throw line. For their sake, hopefully this is some early season jitters and new players coming together. Their whole offense is driving to the basket and drawing fouls. They shot 33 times from the line and made 14. Can't beat anyone that way, let alone Syracuse. And, they can't hit 3's with many of their attempts not even drawing iron (which likely had something to do with the wind, which must have impacted their free throws too). Syracuse looked really good in the first half, and seemed to coast in the 2nd half. They're tough.
Didn't need this game to know Syracuse was going to be tough. I'd wait until SDSU plays in a real game (inside without wind in your face and sun in your eyes) before I pass judgement. Sheppard didnt shoot well, agreed, but he rebounded, handled and passed really well in the few minutes I watched and looked pretty effortless doing it. Didn't see (or notice Polee)
Difference of opinion on Sheppard's handle. I thought his play was sloppy, as was much of SDSU's in the game. That had less to do with sun and wind and more to do with wings trying to penetrate with a lot of one on one play. They could really use an effective pg, but I didn't see one yesterday. Agreed we can judge them later in the year when they've settled in.
