Achiuwa May redshirt

I wish someone would explain to me why teams red shirt players now days. I remember in the past when players would get a medical red shirt, but this other red shirt business leaves me scratching my head. What if there are several injuries and they need more bodies? What if the player wants to play now and not wait a whole year? I say this because of this red shirt Felix nonsense. Sometimes, college basketball gets me so aggravated. And the NCAA bozos don't help either.

Because teams rarely play more than 10 guys. So stacking up 13 scholarships is a waste unless your utilize the NCAA rule which gives players 5 yrs to play 4 yrs.

I was never a fan of using all 13 ships. With Max out were down to 12. I would red shirt 1 player not 2 IMO. Preferably Gift since I think Sanchez will be just 1 yr.

Moose totally agree with you and it's just about certain Sanchez will only have a year of eligibility.

I have no problem with Sanchez only having one year. I just want to see both Sanchez and Marco cleared already. We have a game against a solid opponent looming and we are still in limbo a bit. I'd feel a ton better hearing those guys are cleared so we can either redshirt Achiuwa or not and get our roster settled. I agree that there is little benefit to redshirting Balamou. I like the kid and think he can help depth- wise, especially with Branch out right now and in case of injury to one of our guards. Would be nice to get closure soon so we can see what our roster really looks like.

I've stated this a couple of times over the past couple of days.... I think we'll see GG suit up in Charleston, if Sanchez and Bourgault status is still in limbo.

If Sanchez and Bourgault end up being eligible, we'll probably end up having frontcourt dept by default.

Agree. Don't think the staff can wait past Charleston. Important tourney for us. It "seems" from the recent decisions on guys like Shabazz and Dez Wells that the NCAA is trying to come up with verdicts before teams first games. I dont know if that will hold true for us as we don't have the clout that UCLA nor Maryland has. Our guys don't have the same complex issues as a guy like Shabazz has so I'd think we should be even further along. Fingers crossed that we get both of our guys back for Detroit. If we do, we have an extremely strong lineup to look forward to this season. We've already seen some excellent and dynamic forwards, and havent even seen arguably the most dynamic in Sanchez nor our shooter in Bourgault. If we are going to dance this year, we need those two on the court.

IMO, we're a 5th-7th place team with Sanchez and Bourgault (along, with Branch). As, far as the redshirting of GG.... Actually, I don't have a problem with redshirting GG, but I also do not have a problem playing him this season, either.

For the poster who want Gift to be freed. Free Sanchez and Bourgault, as well. LOL

Agree, with Sanchez and Bourgault, we're 7th or higher. Anxious to get this done.

Great post...completely agree. I predicted 23 wins with Sanchez and Bourgault, but I am really scared without them. As for GG, redshirting him could result in 3-4 November losses if Sanchez isn't cleared. Will the return next year be that great?

Calipari, Boeheim, Pitino, etc don't worry about how many scholarships they burn. They actually over-recruit and worry about the numbers game later.

You don't go into battle without all of your ammunition.

Especially:
1. For a young team
2. When you're trying to establish a winning culture.

Forget about tomorrow. If Gift rides the pine (plays few minutes) for the year and you don't need him, he's not going pro any way.

Throw him a bash on Senior Night and make him feel good.

But don't sit a 6'8, strong and fast big for next year as if you're incapable of recruiting someone better than him.

FREE GIFT!!!

Re your point on the decision process, interesting quote from the ESPN article on Shabazz:

A source told ESPN.com's Dana O'Neil that NCAA committees are aware of an ineligible athlete's game schedule and attempt to clarify things as soon as they can, once the reinstatement process begins.

Thanks Austour. I didn't see that. Hopefully they get to our guys this weekend. I don't care If the NCAA calls us 5 minutes before the Detroit game and clears our guys, as long as it gets done.

If GG is red-shirted do we then try to bring back Chandler after his second JC year?

I think we stay in touch regardless of GG redshirting.

Agree with you on that. I'm sure a lot of teams are going to check in on him over the next two years.
Think of it this way; he's a top 50 talent who will have two years of experience (plus his year of prep). Most big men who juco are raw offensively; not the case with Chandler, he's got a big time offensive game.

I know he's had question marks surrounding him for years, but an experienced and very talented big man isn't your typical recruit. Getting a top 50 center, who already has the experience of a Junior is going to be a gift to some team.

Watching this San Diego State/Syracuse game.

There's no way we can compete with Cuse's length. They just march long body after long body onto the court.

Also, we need shooters to bust that zone.

Scary team.

Gift would log quality minutes against a team like this.

How does Polee look?

I've been flicking back and forth and haven't seen him. Winston Sheppard OTOH is a very smooth player who I think will be good in a year or two.

But they are also currently getting outrebounded as well..

I've been doing the same, austour. I'm watching NFL games, as well. I guess I've missed the time(s) when Polee was in the game. Quite frankly, I wasn't even thinking about him, as I forgot he was with the Aztecs.

I also think we have the sufficient length, IF Sanchez, Bourgault, and even GG are suited up. Still awhile before we play the 'Cuse.
