The logic being what has been speculated by many... Orlando and JaKarr leave early he can slide back in
Looks like Gift is being held out of tonight's game
Several tweets say new NCAA regs are such that, if you play even 1 minute in an exhibition game, you cannnot be redshirted
I don't understand why Marco and Orlando aren't suiting up
They aren't redshirt candidates and would play this season not matter what their class standing might be

NEW YORK — Two members of St. John’s heralded recruiting class won’t play in tonight’s preseason exhibition while they await “separate eligibility rulings from the NCAA regarding classification,” according to St. John’s.
Orlando Sanchez, a 6-foot-9 forward, and Marc Antoine-Bourgault, a junior swingman, are both out for the Sonoma State game. Sanchez, 24, could be ruled a junior or a senior, while Bourgault could be a sophomore or a junior.

Not sure what sense redshirting GG makes here. You'd have to think that a soph (plus one prep year) Christian Jones is a better option up front than GG. Also, Obekpa as a soph will be almost certainly be much more improved than the freshman version. Add in minutes from Pointer and Garrett, and there won't be many minutes up front even if Sanchez AND Sampson (don't see this happening) leave early.
STJ is also recruiting on a completely different level now and any player Lavin brings in for next year will be better than GG. There are also always better JUCO options than GG. I really don't understand this.
Here are a couple of more tweets on GG....
New NCAA rule states that if a player participates in a single minute of exh., they can't redshirt. #stjbb
Gift may redshirt, which is why he is wearing sweats today. No definite decision yet on whether he will or not. #stjbb
I wish someone would explain to me why teams red shirt players now days. I remember in the past when players would get a medical red shirt, but this other red shirt business leaves me scratching my head. What if there are several injuries and they need more bodies? What if the player wants to play now and not wait a whole year? I say this because of this red shirt Felix nonsense. Sometimes, college basketball gets me so aggravated. And the NCAA bozos don't help either.

Because teams rarely play more than 10 guys. So stacking up 13 scholarships is a waste unless your utilize the NCAA rule which gives players 5 yrs to play 4 yrs.
I was never a fan of using all 13 ships. With Max out were down to 12. I would red shirt 1 player not 2 IMO. Preferably Gift since I think Sanchez will be just 1 yr.
I hate to sound like a broken record but I just want to reiterate how big of a mistake I think it would be if the staff redshirted Gift this year.
After watching opening night games, having big bodies and rebounders on your bench is crucial.
If they think that they can parade Sanchez and Obekpa at Center over the course of a season and hopefully tourney run, they're nuts.
Bigs get into foul trouble so easily. From guards barreling into the lane hoping to get calls to quick-trigger refs, bigs have it the worst out there.
Suit up Gift. He's a Senior. He has great academics and I assume will have great job prospects come graduation. He's not a pro prospect. Free up that scholly for next year and more importantly
FREE GIFT!!!

Think the play may have always been to RS Felix. I think the emergence of Christian Jones has made the Gift RS a possibility. This team could be poised for a deep run in 2014. A 5th year senior post, rather than a freshman (as might be the case otherwise) could be huge next season.
