A Short History of SJU Big Men

How about Ed Searcy?   He was 6'5'"- 6'6" but played center in the 70's.   He played in the days of no-dunking.  He would just place the ball gently into hoop.

If you think about it during some of our best years, we were playing Sean Muto against the likes of Coleman, Mourning and Mutombo.

He's also 12 up on me on St. John's all-time assists list. I thought I could catch him but the big guy was just too deft of a passer.

this topic doesn't deserve more than 2pages other than Sean Muto for president

When’s the last time we had a big who could play in the post? Legit? I can’t even think of one. Justin Burrell? Sean Evans?

Huge issue last season was the lack of a post presence. This kid is a must and the staff knows it. For Anderson to reach out this early they must feel confident

I think the last time St. John's had a good big man was when either Eisenhower or Truman was President.

Going back some but one of the best I saw playing for the Redmen was Leroy Ellis and the records he set back him up. Watching him and Tony Jackson play together was a joy

LeRoy Ellis was great, and it was so long ago, JFK wasn't elected President when LeRoy started to play for us. Averaged 16.5 rebounds once, and had 30 rebounds in a game, 8th overall pick in the draft when he came out. he has to be the best Big in St. John's history hands down.Nice NBA career too, on the Lakers Championship all time winning team. Tragically died young (72) of prostate cancer. He does not get enough recognition when we talk of  SJU All Time Greats.

Something about LA?  Happy Hairston also played forward for LA in that era and died of prostate cancer at age 59.  Knew him and his family at NYU.
