I do have a tendency to erase Zendon from my recollection, but yes he was a legit big.  Lamont Hamilton was probably on the borderline of that - I liked him but he was a step down from the Zendon/Shawnelle/Jayson Williams class of center.  Even a bit from the Robert Werdanns of the world, IMO.

Either way it's been a looooong time.
I played against Zendon when he was a senior at Sewanhaka HS and it was crazy how effortless it seemed to him. I mean, dude was 6-11, but he put up a triple-double against us about as quietly as you can (11 freaking blocks). We kept it close against them, we were a decent team, but you knew he was a legit big man (back to basket, no problem dunking, solid rebounder, etc) even before he got to SJU. Hate to say this, but I honestly thought he’d be a little better even though he definitely had a good career here.

That's a great post, Guinness.

My 2 objections to him were (a) zero - and I do mean zero - passes out of the post; and (b) the constant scowl.
It’s funny you mention scowl. The big story about him in high school (should mention it was supposedly an AAU/Summer League game) was that he decked a guy on the handshake line after a game. I never heard it to be definitely true but it became like an urban legend in those circles.

Haven’t seen anyone mention Anthony Glover. Undersized, but had a ton of heart. One of my favorite SJU players I’ve seen.

was not rudy bogad the center when sonny played for SJU?

Not Dove's first year when they upset Michigan. Bogad was a frosh that year and it was pre-freshman eligibility days.
And apologies for derailing the thread; my last post on former big men lol.

So James naismith is transferring in?

We’re getting an “old school” big man?

No, just anticipating discussion of SJ best big in laced ball era :)

That's the ball from our last tournament win.

Going back some but one of the best I saw playing for the Redmen was Leroy Ellis and the records he set back him up. Watching him and Tony Jackson play together was a joy

No knock on Shawnelle Scott but let’s be real with his offensive game. Everything was a muscle layup. He couldn’t hit the ocean from 10 feet.

If shawnelle scott had elected to transfer after his junior year in this climate, he’d be one of the biggest targets on the market.  The blue bloods would be clamoring for him

I'd love to have a legit 6'10" big whose every move was a muscle layup right now, especially if he put up anything close to Shawnelle's numbers.

Was good enough to have a cup of coffee in the NBA

Must mention Leroy Ellis who was probably the best big man to play at SJU.  Haggerty award winner; senior year averaged 23.5 PPG and 16.5 RPG.    Also Leroy had a successful NBA career.  Further, a shout out to Bill Wennington who won more NBA championship rings than any other Johnnie (with a little help from a guy initialed MJ).
