A Short History of SJU Big Men

I do have a tendency to erase Zendon from my recollection, but yes he was a legit big.  Lamont Hamilton was probably on the borderline of that - I liked him but he was a step down from the Zendon/Shawnelle/Jayson Williams class of center.  Even a bit from the Robert Werdanns of the world, IMO.

Either way it's been a looooong time.
I honestly thought he’d be a little better even though he definitely had a good career here.
I just tried to PM you something firsthand about why he wasn't better, but was thwarted by restrictions.

The site settings are that you can only PM people you're friend with.  I thought I was friends with LJ but apparently not, so i just sent the friend request.

Anybody else who wants to PM me (or anyone else), click on their profile and then click "send friend request."  Once they accept, you can PM them.

I played against Vassil Evtimov (and Drew Nicholas) also back then. Talk about big men, that guy was a friggin load. Too bad he busted in college. Played Ed Brown in a summer league game back then too. Another big fella who, unfortunately, didn’t do much here either.

I was really shocked that Evtimov wasn't a monster.

Yeah me too, he destroyed us single-handedly. Nicholas was also very good playing as a frosh and they had some other guard who’s name escapes me who had a good game. I guess following in Montross’ shoes was too tough.

That Bob McKillop always had a solid team. My HS coach would schedule us against Lutheran every year and they beat us every year I played there (3 years). I played from ‘93-95 and we played the likes of Brentwood, Floyd, St. Mary’s, St. John the Baptist, the schools I already mentioned out of league and then our league schedule felt like a walk to us. We lost to the eventual State Champs my senior year in the county semis.

McKillop here would have been interesting because I never bought that “above 125th St.” crap. Guy brought talent to Lutheran consistently.

Honestly it's pretty jarring to think about the fact that we haven't had any big man with back to the basket moves or any semblance of post moves for the better part of two decades now.

It's not that we havent had big men here. But none of them ever seemed to develop an offensive game.

Ditto. And out jumped.

Ty Grant, Anthony Glover or anyone of that ilk at the 5 represents one thing: a recruiting failure by that coaching staff.

Not exactly a law firm, but at least one was in need of a lawyer.
