When’s the last time we had a big who could play in the post? Legit? I can’t even think of one. Justin Burrell? Sean Evans?

Huge issue last season was the lack of a post presence. This kid is a must and the staff knows it. For Anderson to reach out this early they must feel confident

Shawnelle Scott

And Shawnelle Scott was followed immediately by Zendon who graduated in 1998. No real classic post bigs of any significance since.

I do have a tendency to erase Zendon from my recollection, but yes he was a legit big.  Lamont Hamilton was probably on the borderline of that - I liked him but he was a step down from the Zendon/Shawnelle/Jayson Williams class of center.  Even a bit from the Robert Werdanns of the world, IMO.

Either way it's been a looooong time.

You're right Boo. My mistake, I'd forgotten Lamont; gave us three very solid years of scoring and rebounding from the post.

Appreciate Shawnelle & Lamont more every day

Yeah, I used to criticize Lamont for failing to finish sometimes.  I would take player  like him in a heartbeat today!

I played against Zendon when he was a senior at Sewanhaka HS and it was crazy how effortless it seemed to him. I mean, dude was 6-11, but he put up a triple-double against us about as quietly as you can (11 freaking blocks). We kept it close against them, we were a decent team, but you knew he was a legit big man (back to basket, no problem dunking, solid rebounder, etc) even before he got to SJU. Hate to say this, but I honestly thought he’d be a little better even though he definitely had a good career here.

We had 6-7 Lloyd Sony Dove ,he played at center a lot but was not a center but had talent to make up for it

Eric Paschall transferred out of Fordham , went to Nova , won a NCAA title and , I believe is now in the NBA .  Sometimes kids at other schools can play , despite not being on the Kentucky , Kansas , Duke radar .  For example , Abmas at Oral Roberts. There are others .  Fordham is a great school Academically and while it might not get top 100 kids , some players want the Education Benefits in addition to playing ball .                 Plus , a guy like Paschall or this kid might be good enough to make a BE or other Conference school but , not get minutes behind a more highly recruited player . Just saying ..
Believe Paschal was always viewed as being at the BE level. If I recall correctly, his parents had a big say with respect to the Fordham choice - based on academics.

With that said, your point is valid. Plenty of players moving up do very well especially after they have gained experience from heavy PT.

That's a great post, Guinness.

My 2 objections to him were (a) zero - and I do mean zero - passes out of the post; and (b) the constant scowl.

Shawnelle Scott
Going back to ‘74, George Johnson had the best back to the basket game - by far (IMO). Shawnelle, however, also had a very good back to the basket game.

So true. Bill Buntin, the All American center for Michigan, who the Johnnies upset in Holiday Festival in Sonny's sophomore year was also 6'7". That is still my fondest memory of attending an SJU game.
