2025 Portal

Rick reiterated on PMT that we're only looking to replace Kadary, Scott and Smith in the portal this year, and said the importance of frosh returning. Also an interesting tidbit about coaching in the Euroleague prepared him for this since contracts are rarely more than two years.

Also said he doesn't get involved in the financial negotiations with the player, but he can call Repole if he needs any more money :ROFLMAO:

"only"

Are multi year NIL deals a thing? Is it possible to lock a player up for more than 1 year?
You can but would you want to? One year deals allow either party to walk if it doesn’t work out.

Sounds like RJ is returning for his senior year.

My understanding that is one of the reasons the decision was made for schools to become directly involved legally with NIL. Talk about slippery slopes, and I am no lawyer so there are certainly people here qualified to correct me, but how is a contract with a third party enforced to make a player and school both respect that contract?
Again, certainly way out of my comfort zone or area of expertise, but this view was shared by a D2 NJAC coach.

Good point. I was told by someone involved with NIL the reason I had given but I am sure their are multiple ones including what you brought out.

To add, Athletic scholarships are also good for one year and are renewable so one year deals fall in line with that concept.

This is similar to what recently happened with a football player named Xavier Lucas. Wisconsin tried to block him from portalling to Miami. Then, Lucas took matters into his own hands:

"Lucas's representation claims that after he was denied the right to enter the transfer portal, he unenrolled from the university. At that point, he claims that he connected with Miami and signed with the school. Wisconsin also claims it has evidence that Miami tampered with Lucas before he entered the portal."

"NCAA rules do not prevent a student-athlete from unenrolling from an institution, enrolling at a new institution and competing immediately," the NCAA said in a statement to Yahoo Sports."

Schools have very limited power to do anything to prevent a player from leaving. The NCAA, in addition to being a mess, is powerless.

I guess I just have to get used to the idea of re recruiting all of your own players every year. I generally feel like I want the vast majority of current players with eligibility to stick around each year and wouldn't mind multi year arrangements. That's not to say that's how most feel, or that's a better approach. It's just how I feel.

I have no idea who we are eying for the portal and I’m sure there’s already lots of scouting, chatter, and negotiation with agents / handlers behind the curtains BUT I can say confidently that we will absolutely be even MORE attractive to portal recruits who now see that Pitino and this program mean business!

Our most important portal targets are on the roster right now. Need some luck with Deivon extra year and after that it’s retain, retain, retain. We can be a top 10 team with no major additions.

I think Luis goes pro. I haven’t heard any good evidence Deivon has additional eligibility. We’ll hopefully retain zuby, Wilcher, prey, Dunlap?and others on bench. We need some big outside additions.

PS - Marillac2 you’re a great poster here. I’ve been on this site with a few different names since 2000 and have always appreciated your thoughts even if I don’t agree(Jenkins).

I’m not convinced Luis is ready for the NBA. I don’t see his name on any 1 sr round draft boards. If he’s a second round pick, he’s better off staying in college.
