2025 Portal

I’m not convinced Luis is ready for the NBA. I don’t see his name on any 1 sr round draft boards. If he’s a second round pick, he’s better off staying in college.

Second round picks are no longer better off staying in college. They get paid a lot, even if on a two way contract. Unless we offer RJ $2 mil+ for next year he goes pro if given a second round assurance. He’s 22 yo. It’s time to make his move. Would love for him to stay but it’s not in his best interest.

RJ, Zuby, Sim, Dunlap, Prey, Lefty, Ayo, Glover, Maker. Four open spots. But that’s a pretty good start.
+ Vince

Assume RJ goes pro for reasons Queenstowncali noted(which I agree has gotten more lucrative), i still think odds would be shocking there is zero portal movement.

There will be portal movement and we will bring in 2-4 big time players to replace Richmond, Scott, and likely Luis and Smith. Players are going to be more eager than ever to come here. We’ll just need to be selective and find the rights guys.

Trying not to be my usual optimistic self… gonna count Luis gone, along with KR Dev and Scott… those are very large shoes to fill…

-Bringing back Zuby will be the anchor…
-With the jump we’ve seen in Sim this season from freshmen to soph, and the glimpses in potential (like today for that 5 mins stretch)- his junior year could be special
-I’m on the Ayo train… is there room Marillac? I like the cut of his jib… not saying he’ll start… but a damn good rotational piece
-I wanna give Brady one more year… the more I watch our defense… the less convinced I am that Brady is a fit… BUT… he will be a redshirt sophomore next year. Lets convince him to try one more year… if it doesn’t work- he’ll have two years left to contribute elsewhere
-Prey and Lefty- hope they stay
-Vince and Jaiden- I think they’re gone.

That’s 6 guys I have staying… need atleast 3 big-time contributors in the portal, and then 2-3 rotational guys

I can see it going both ways with RJ at this point. I'm sure he wants to be a pro, because they all do. Same time, those "second round assurances" are sometimes meaningless. Plenty of kids have been told that and I don't believe any team guarantees it in a legally enforceable way.

Not worried though nor am I really focused on any of this. Confident we will do what we have to in the offseason. Now is about the present and this amazing, fun to watch, gritty, hard nosed and easy to root for group.

Just want to give you 1 last shout out before I take my Ambien for selling 2 tix today at basically face value to Johnnie’s fans I have no problem admitting I’d have sold them for more $ on the Johnnie’s account ticket exchange thing

You are a great fan

"Usually second round picks sign contracts that contain little or no guaranteed money. Many will sign two-way contracts that allow their teams to split their time between the NBA and the G League.

For example, Jalen Pickett was picked No. 32 overall in the 2023 NBA draft and signed a four-year $8.2 million contract with the Denver Nuggets that came with $5.8 million guaranteed. Denver clearly thought highly of him. Conversely, the last pick in the second round of last year's draft, Chris Livingston, got a four-year deal from the Milwaukee Bucks worth $7.6 million in total and included $3.01 million guaranteed
.'

RJ will do what’s best for him. I would say most players that aren’t guaranteed nba rosters wish they were back in college. He’s gona make money playing basketball for a long time. Bring back RJ, Zuby and Sim (+ others) and you’re looking at another really good team to be a part of and continue this momentum.

This is the court ruling where Smith would hypothetically say he has one year remaining, specifically on page 5/#23.

He was ruled ineligible by NCAA until mid December in 2023-2024 season. So my understanding is he would fall under this. 🤷🏻‍♂️
Hard to read that as not applicable to Deivon but maybe there's something I don't know. Is that ruling final?

My assumption is Richmond, Luis, Smith, Scott all gone to play for pay elsewhere. And Ayo should probably go down a level to get more PT but the relationship with Pitino may keep him here. I recall commentary that this was a one-year thing for Prey; I have no idea if that's accurate but it would be hugely helpful if he returns. Have already been comments about Dunlap portaling. Not sure what Glover will do after this year. Vince, who knows.

Bottom line is the only relatively sure things I see for next year's roster are Zuby and Sim. Maybe Lefteris. Maker, I suppose. Gonna be a whole lot of work to be done.

Enjoying this season while it's here!

The highlighted part is absolute lunacy. The value that kid has here next year cannot be overstated. He just came in cold against the two-time defending national champions and shut down a lottery pick at his position, did every little thing one could imagine to help us win, he switched beautifully onto anyone and everyone and literally covered all 5 positions. He completely bullied Diarra for 3 possessions...that's a kid 2-3 positions down from him and he ate his lunch right after covering Samson Johson down low. His +/- have been great all year.

Ayo will be a core rotational piece next year. He's already the 7th man on a top 10 team.

I knew this post was coming. Great kid; has athleticism and is a good defender. This is a very unique team and I would be surprised if Pitino's team next year is built like this one, which may limit Ayo's role. And Ayo might want to go be a mainstay someplace else. I guess we will see.

It's kind of crazy to say but it looked like he belonged on the court yesterday against UConn. I don't think its a stretch to think he can give us 10-15 quality minutes a game next year, be a team captain while we're top 25 and he gets "overpaid" compared to his market. Would more playing time and less money, and no leadership role, be worth it to him so he can go to a random A-10 or NEC school?

Only reason I'd say someone should expect RJ to leave is either you think we're going to go on a NCAA run & his stock is going to exponentially increase, or you want to protect yourself from disappointment.

Both things I totally get and wouldn't really argue about.

But if the NBA draft was in two weeks, I'd be shocked if he gets drafted at all. He's talked about as getting drafted as a 3/D type wing with upside. But he doesn't have the former. We're his best place to go if the NBA doesn't work out. Repole's literally on the public record saying he wants to shell out $$$ for him and Rick's stopped saying he's leaving publicly. 🤷‍♂️

Matt and Rick are to be commended for last year’s portal haul. Richmond, Smith and Scott are talented, but also mega aggressive team first guys. They were so positive re: team chemistry and coordination at both ends of court, especially for our staple, Defense. I never get too giddy over “names” in portal (Cliff exhibit 1), rather how players will fit the system and complement each other. This will be a challenge no matter how successful we are, although our appeal has obviously increased. I did not mention RJ because he was not part of this portal group, but obviously losing these four presents a huge challenge.

There is no way to predict who of the potential returnees is on the roster next season. There are just too many variables in this free agency era to predict anything. As LMF said, it is best to enjoy the hell out of this season and see where the chips fall in March. UConn fans this year got overly excited about some incoming recruits w reputations & Karaban staying. They disregarded the impact of losing three very talented guards and an NBA big who drove their championship level defense. You can see how that translated in 24-25.
