2024-25 Season

Still one regular season game left, but here are my regular season grades:
Zuby-A+
Hit a wall a few games back but seems to have bounced back nicely. Would like him to hit free throws better at end of games but has been a pleasure to watch and root for. Should be All BE and BE defensive player of the year.

Scott-A
For us to make any noise he has to knock down a better percentage of his open threes. Outside of that he has been our best defender and free throw shooter. Ultimate glue guy.

Luis-A+
Our best player is always judged too harshly from our fan base. Yes has his moments but he is our most important player. Best offensive player on team that struggles to score at times, 2nd best rebounder and good defender. BE player of the year and should be All American.

Kadary-A
Outside of the first 10 games has been what we thought he would be. Can’t just forget those games so he gets A instead of A+
Improved his FT shooting greatly and I am almost confident in him there, but like almost everyone on this team it is still a worry in post season. Don’t think I ever changed my opinion on a player so drastically in season. First team All BE.

Smith-B
Shooting is erratic and can force things but he plays D, rebounds and plays hard. Free Throw shooting and knocking down open 3’s a concern.

Wilcher-C+
Plays hard has nice mid range, a willing defender and a good athlete. Needs to knock down open threes and his end of game awareness his awful.

Ayo-A+
In early season tried to do too much. Now only positives when he plays and has a nice three point shot.

Prey-C
Good defender and rebounder. Offensively he is a total mess at this point. Nice that he finally hit a three but now afraid he will take more of them.

Vince-D
He is tall and actually has nice touch around the basket. The problem is he is often out of position, doesn’t seem to have any basketball instincts and is unsteady on his feet. Sort of like a baby giraffe.

Lefty, Glover, Dunlap-Incomplete due to injury and or lack of PT.

Pitino-A+
2nd or 3rd best regular season of my lifetime.
With much less talent than 85 or 86 teams.
Postseason will determine if jumps Jarvis or even Louie in rankings of best ST John’s coach of my lifetime.

It's so crazy to me that when I go to ESPN's college basketball section, the top 3 headlines are:
They didn't have to make St. John's moving up one AP spot a headline (could've focused on #1/2 like they normally do), but they did because we're driving clicks. I even checked using a different browser to make sure I wasn't seeing some type of personalized headlines, and nope... this is reality. We're truly the biggest story in college basketball this year, with the only possible exception being Cooper Flagg.

Duke, Houston, St. John's, Tennessee defenses are built for March

Rick Pitino at St. John's: One of the game's greatest minds has turned the Red Storm into a defensive nightmare. They switch, they trap, they make you uncomfortable. Pitino's crew is buying into his full-court pressure and locking teams up in the half court.

Spot on except Smith. He's averaging 36.5% from 3. He's an A

Not bad.

Prey is at least a B. I will let you use your imagination for who would get the lone F.
Smith is an A or A- at worst
Wilcher is a B for defense alone
Kadary is an A+
Scott is an A-

Spot on except Smith. He's averaging 36.5% from 3. He's an A
In BE games he’s 30% from 3 and 36% from 2. But he always contributes in other areas which is not something we can say about our other guard not named Kadary.

You don't like Wilcher's defense?
Was referring more to rebounds and assists. 1.6 boards in 25 minutes a game during conference play. For a not small or unatheltic player, I don’t think there’s an excuse for that.

While I think he’s been good defensively, I do think it has been a little overrated this season. But his effort on that end is fantastic.

Overall, I think wilcher has a lot to prove going into his junior year and I’m not at all sold on him becoming our 2nd or 3rd scorer, and don’t think he does those other things well enough to be a 30 minute guy in that case.

I really hope he stays but I don't think he'll be getting "future the program" treatment this offseason.

Fair. I think we both like guys that hunt the ball and he definitely doesn't do that. I just checked his full stats for the first time right now...1.9 rebounds. Holy sh*t! That's crazy. 1.2 FT attempts. This kid needs to get in the weight room and learn to play physical.

The big stat both of you are missing is he has 81 fouls on the year, averaging 2.8 fouls per game since January. I think that impacts how aggressive and physical he can be. He has more fouls than rebounds, and almost more fouls than rebounds/free throw attempts combined.

Smith’s upping the pace, contributing to opponents exhaustion on top of our relentless switching D, is what stands out to me. My eye test says when Smith is pushing the ball it also results in better open perimeter shots for guys and 🤞our % from three continues on upward arc. (Within reason of course)
