2017 Transfers

Funny how recruiting works. When all was swell and Sid was in 2017 class we did not recruit him hard because we only had 1 ship ( at the time) and then when he moved to 2018 he became desirable to not only us but others as well. Problem was that we were also recruiting 500 other kids for 2018 so Sid wasn't getting the attention he felt he deserved from St. John's. Now that he has floated staying in 2017 and our scholarship situation has changed... We are in love again lol. Apparently he has made it known to the staff that 2017 was an option for awhile now and secret squirrel has been on the case. I hope he gets this nut because Sid is one of my favorites :)

Gonzalo is going to be thrilled when he wakes up.

Comes as a surprise, but St. John's is in top 6 for potentially reclassifying 2017 wing Sidney Wilson. Source said Johnnies in mix. #sjubb

Now told St. John's has been quietly recruiting Sidney Wilson for a while. Interesting stuff. #sjubb

Must be fake news. According to Lisa we stopped recruiting him over a year ago........NOT! !!!

The fake news comment was a response to you saying he was a lock for us a few months ago, which was not the case.

1. We never stopped recruiting him.
2. A few months ago 24/7 has the probability of him going to SJU at 100%
3. The latest projection has lowered the probability to 67%.
4. Syracuse is pushing hard.

FWIW, Those that think that St. John's stopped recruiting him a year ago are getting their news from a different dimension. St. John's only offered Sid last July, 2016, and was one of the first schools to offer. That was only 9 months ago. ;)

As Happy stated, Wilson reclassifying and changing back to 2017 class has changed his recruiting. Try not to look into those 247 projections, they are usually from random reporters and are often outdated.

"After speaking with my family and coaches, I have decided that I will graduate from Brewster Academy as a member of the Class of '17. I will explore potential options available now but may elect to do a postgraduate year at Brewster and reclassify to the Class of '18

According to Zags, Syracuse, Texas, Maryland and Florida are working the hardest for Sid

Sid Wilson was considered a lock a few months ago for St. John's. Syracuse apparently has the inside track niw.
Major target to replace Bashir Ahmed.

Hasn't it been more like a year and a half since there was mutual interest?

I agree and there is no guarantee he doesn't go to post grad. I also agree about 24/7 but the latest projection was updated very recently based on inquiries and comments. He is a city kid and it is wise to keep the foot on the pedal with this one. My comment was in response to the implication we mutually lost interest which was baffling since we only offered him 9 months ago and there are no guarantees for the 2018 class either. Nice replacement for Ellison and ultimately Ahmed.

Is he considering prepping solely to increase his stock or are there academic question marks?

You know me well.

Would be nice to get Wilson, especially in light of fact that prime 18 SF target, Nas Little, is blowing up & likely will wind up with an elite program.

UCONN can offer Wilson a lot of immediate PT so I suspect they are positioned well.

If SJU did land Wilson, I would be interested to hear Happy's take on any impact on Diakite's 18 verbal, since they play similarly. (Although SW is more seasoned player)

I would take Sid Wilson in a heartbeat and worry later.

Sid is th better player but I wouldn't rule out Diatkite showing up on campus early to red shirt. I also wouldn't rule out him not showing up to St. John's at all as he has been a drifter on AAU circuit. He just left the Lightning for the Rens. We made his top 6 but in my opinion we might as well be 7th in the race for Wilson. I hope I am wrong because I happen to like him a lot :)

In other words iyo we are up shit's creek with both.
On the bright side, do you think we lead with any prep recruits ?
Do you think Rooks is even a remote possibility?

Wouldn't say that.. I just don't feel confident with Sid . Rooks is not good and is not coming here.

Re. Rooks, at 7'1 265, I would take him if he is as good as Amar but plays the 5. I don't think he is coming east either but we, for whatever reason, are one of 9 schools after him. ;)

+1 I don't think some appreciate how important it is to have depth on the frontline. At this point, I would be thrilled to have a serviceable big guy who could give us 10-15 minutes a game. Injuries and foul trouble are inevitable and it's likely that one or more of Yakwe, Owens, Ahmed, and the Michigan St. kid will miss one or more games.

Matchups are also important and it may be that against certain teams our best chance to win is to play big.

As our roster is currently constructed, there is extremely little room for error. To make the dance, everything would have to go right. Not a great way to start the season in year three, particularly in light of Lovett's return.

Hopefully last luck will be on our side and we will avoid the injury bug and certain players will drastically improve. She hasn't been for quite some time.

I have a quick question for some of the more knowledgeable posters. Several people have alluded to the possibility of Diakite reclassifying in 2017 and red shirting. I understand that he is not as much of a finished product as Wilson, but is he so raw that he would contribute little or nothing next year?

I ask because we need bodies and although he is a small forward, perhaps he could give us some help up front. Is his game similar to Yakwe's? Even if that we're the case, the freshman version of Yakwe was a significant contributor albeit on a very bad team.

maybe he would reclassify on the condition he would redshirt because he would rather be on campus to develop his game ? I dont know the answer. Just wondering if that could be a reason

Maybe so. But in these days when many kids don't plan to stay all four years, I can't imagine a kid preferring to red shirt over playing so he can preserve his fifth year of eligibility.
