2017-2018 Season

From Zach Braziller

St. John's has just three Big East games at MSG: Georgetown, Villanova, Seton Hall. #sjubb

Only 5 MSG games this year? I would have thought this was the year we start putting more back in schedule. We can barely use the Garden as a recruiting chip anymore.

I prefer MSG because I don't drive, but 5 MSG games was the norm back in the glory years of the 80s.

It used to be only Georgetown, Syracuse, Holiday Festival (2 games back then), and a high-major non-conference game, with everything else at CA.

Xavier and Marquette at MSG last year only drew about 7500 each. They probably figure, that you might as well sell out CA with those numbers. Maybe more of a home court advantage doing that (the place was rocking at the Butler game).

I find it interesting that the Butler, Xavier and Creighton games would all be played at CA this season. I don't disagree with it because I don't think games should be played at MSG unless they can draw 12,000.
Since MSG is a big part of SJU's recruiting I would like to see two games a year vs high majors every year at MSG. That would mean four games a year vs high majors ( two home and two away) not counting the Big East games every year.
If games vs opponents like Butler, Xavier and Creighton are going to be played at CA that opens up the CA expansion question again.

I would be all for tearing down CA and Taffner, and building a 9500 seat arena in it's place (anything more then that, and you'd still want MSG).

If it has to be built on the same spot, and we have to be a traveling road show for a year, I'll live with that. There should be enough dates at MSG, Barclays, and the new Nassau Coliseum to fill out a home schedule (it would suck playing in those empty arenas, but for one year, it would be for the greater good).

Probably need Repole's horses to start winning big again for that to happen, though it would be nice to see the school dip into it's own pockets, for once.

I've asked before. Is there any potential to play at Arthur Ashe or Armstrong which I hear is being covered? Ten minutes from campus and parking up the wazoo plus subway access.

Article on the full schedule. Also mentions an exhibition game against Divison 2 American International College (Springfield, MA - Jim Calhoun's alma matter) on Halloween night.

MSG source on St John's: Less available dates bc of Big Ten tourney and Grammys. Nothing more than that #sjubb

After viewing the full schedule, It was good to see Iona, but instead of Central Conn. and Molloy, we could have scheduled Fordham and Manhattan. Better game for the crowd, probably sell a few more tickets, and players might be more motivated to play against a city school. Playing Hofstra, at the Nassau Coliseum, would also be worth a try.
Also, with Syracuse no longer wishing to play us, is there another school that would give us a non-conference big draw game for MSG next year?

I don't see this happening but that would be cool in my opinion. Plus the acoustics would make the place extremely loud. I think Arthur Ashe stadium is to big as you might as well play at MSG instead but depending Louis Armstrong would be cool

I feel like the kids play better in CA anyway ( ignoring LIU and Deleware state). Maybe this becomes a blessing in disguise.

Wonder how Marquette, Butler, X feel about coming to NYC, and not playing at MSG (or even Barclays or Nassau).
Probably not good, I suspect.

They'll play in MSG during the BE tournament. It's not about appeasing them it's about us.

Smart move by #SJUBB playing more conference games on campus. Yes, it's old and hot. But it's intimidating. Actual home court advantage...

This is the argument to be made for more CA games,

We have a Saturday noon game against Marquette this year. Maybe the Garden has 9000 fans spread out for that. CA should sell out for that in almost no time and, barring a snowstorm, should be a great atmosphere.

It's not ideal (far from it), but there could be a benefit to this.

Could be a benefit to us, however, I see it as an invasion of the Big 10 and ACC making inroads into MSG that will severely limit our ability to have home games at The Garden in the future.

The only thing intimidating is those bench seats for people with back problems and the lack of air conditioning for anyone not on blood thinners
