2017-18 Transfers

Just talked to Pitt guard Malik Ellison and his dad, Pervis. They said they’re still undecided on whether Malik will stay at Pitt next season. Hearing from other schools, and no timetable for a decision at this point.
If he jumps ship in Pittsburgh does he have to sit another year?
Yes!

Unless he is a grad transfer and then he would be immediately eligible and have 2 years of eligibility remaining.

Per Andrew Slater FYI
7’ Freshman Ike Obiagu @ike_obiagu has asked for his release from Florida State, per source . Will have 3 years of eligibility. Started 14 games & led FSU with 71 blocks. #Noles

Good times......

I don’t see why he should since he's already had the shitty season he would have had at St. John's.
Suit him up next year because we may be out of Kofi by the time he is eligible.

Former Johnny big recruit that I fanned on;
Georgia C Isaac Kante (FR) is leaving the program. verbalcommits.com/players/isaac-…

He got 24 total minutes for the season. He would have gotten that in one or two games for us.

Just saw a blurb in local Charlotte paper that Wake Forest has signed grad transfer big Ikenna Smart from U. of Buffalo; 6'10 240 lbs averaged 4 pts and 4 rbs in 12 plus minutes per game

Barely an 'arrgh' from me at this point. It is what it is and besides, we're under strict orders to not go 'ooo/ahhh' or lament every 'big' that goes somewhere else.
Remember that NCJohnnie.
Strict orders.

Chicago, got it. Not lamenting, just reporting - only the facts :)

Actually, I'd rant if we did go after someone like this

12 minutes a game at Buffalo? Unless something went on there, how good could he be? That would be my first reaction, anyway.

Which you're apparently having a very difficult time dealing with.:)

Buffalo was actually a very good team this year and has been at there level from when Bobby Hurley was there. Nate Oats is the coach now and he's a good coach. They were 27-9 this year and made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and beat Arizona in the first round. They play a four wing with one big brand of basketball also. I think Ikenna Smart would have been the perfect player for us to pick to play 8-10 minutes a game behind Keita.

Guys - I am on the staff as much as the next guy, generally speaking there is no excuse for striking out on a grad big two offseasons in a row. This is a results business.

But this is a pretty good example of it not just being as easy as "we need a big and this guy would be a great fit why didn't we sign him". Kid is from Nigeria but played high school ball and lived with a host family in Greensboro, NC, about 40 minutes from Wake Forest's campus. Clearly he wanted to go back to play near home/family/friends for his grad year and then start his life. Nothing we did or didn't do would have mattered.

Again, not saying that's necessarily the case with every kid, but there was nothing for us to do here.

WSJF thanks for that insight. The article I read didn't provide that background. Makes perfect sense with those facts; Greensboro is very close to Winston Salem.

You may not have been paying close attention. ;) It has been stated by those "in the know" that staff was more interested in a back up big not a potential starter. Given the other mentioned impediments for us acquiring a big (ie. playing time, perceived lack of development of bigs, bigs transferring out of our program, etc.) this would be the type of big even the staff seemed interested in for a small back up role.

Don't knock it. If nothing else, those numbers are 2.4 points and 1.8 rebounds better per game than what Amar racked up this year (1.6 ppg, 1.2 rpg) in the same number of minutes.
